Which side of the road is safer?
Left side is faster, you don't break your momentum as muchand no jeepneys cut you except at the U Turn slots but this is the fast lane that in itself is a bit more dangerous and its difficult to go back to the slow lane.
The right side is full of Public Utility vehicles which cut you off, and you can't really carry the momentum but the vehicles run slower.

On my training route, it really depends. But most of the time, I find myself of the left side. I feel a lot safer there. The only time I really ride on the right side is when I'm weaving through stopped cars or going on to the sidewalk.

most of the time, specially on streets being plied by PU jeeps and buses, i find the left side more safer (not safest) in the sense that you get to avoid the swerving PU jeeps and buses, who don't seem to care for the safety of other road users. of course the left side of the road is the fast lane and extra care should be taken when taking that part (we should hug the center island as much as we can) because and as pete said, once you get hit, you won't even know what hit you still the bottomline is defensive biking, we should always be aware and be ready to anticipate things in the street. remember: it is anticipating what is supposed to happen, not thinking that it is what should happen. RIDE SAFE EVERYBODY

I rarely go in the left side. I stay close to the right side and middle lane (if there is one). brakes and not racing on the streets is always on my head when riding. I maybe slow, but I'll arrive in one piece, he he he

For me it all depends on the place I usually take the left side especially when climbing a bridge, it has smaller chance to get cut by public utility drivers, left side is safer for me because drivers can easily saw you. Just like when you're driving a car left side of your car are clearly visible than the right side of your car agree? ;D But when in a big road like Edsa, Macapagal, Araneta Ave., C5 I stay on the right side. ;D ;D ;D

Don't hug the center island, or the sidewalk. Leave a foot or two of space. If you hug the island or sidewalk, you're inviting motorists to squeeze past you in the same lane, which is very dangerous. Make them overtake you, as they would a slow vehicle. This means occupying a part of the next lane to go around you. About time we get respect.

i ride edsa everyday to work and to my way back home ...... i find myself always on the left side of the road....just a precaution.....if youre riding at left side of the road make sure you get to know what vehicle is coming close to you from time to time....and watch out for that left pedal o' yours.....cause if ever it hits the gutter and youre in high speed.... BAM!!!....o boy that'll be a disaster....
now think about this.... left side safer?....man... one of my buddy has been hit slightly( take note slightly)....on his right handle bar and man..... in a split second he fell down face down flat..... luckily theres no vehicle next to him ....in edsa this is......blood gushing his face ....but thats a diff story
while ... the right side , slower..... yup it'll break your momentum and it will slow you down....but at the same time cars and jeeps are slower at this place/ side....and to your advantage you can zig zag thru them jeeps....
well this is just me .....im a rider who likes to go on exploring trails ....not a road racer who value speed so much.....as antrax said ....kahit mabagal .....ill arrive in one peace..
thats just me

could be OT but whether you ride left or right, i would advisee getting side view mirrors if you bike commute often. it may not be a bling bling factor, but trust me, a split second head turn just to see the vehicle behind you could be a disaster.
since i favor the right side of the road. i used to have a rear view mirror on my left, so i can check if I can overtake or not.

Good advise Anthrax, I also never favored being on the left side of the road/highway. I still favor the left when biking. I anticipate jeeps who might overtake/swerv, same goes for private vehicles. I never overtake vehicles nor race with them. Hand signals never fail me, they'd stop or slow down as soon as they see you raise that arm.
Just an observation, this is not to discriminate, public transport drivers especially taxi drivers tend to race or speed up compared to private vehicles.

i always stay on the right side of the road...cause i'm more flexible on that side..... i'm on a heavy bike...a single speed front drive....2.3 tires... at that speed staying on the left side of the road is a no no.... he he he.... at the right side i can just go up the sidewalks...jump....drops...rest anytime kung pagod na....sight seeing for lady pasaheros... chit-chat with some friends.....merienda.... dvds....and more things you can do on the right side.... who cares if it breaks your momentum....that's nice especially when you need to slow down.....and it can improve your balancing/handling skills..... but still even you are in the safer side of the road, no one knows accident can happened at that side....like me i was hit by a 500cc big bike few months ago on the right side of the road......always be extra careful... you are shraring the road with vehicles.... it's you..that need to adjust with them...not the vehicles.... always give way as much as possible....

i'm usually on the left side if there is a center island since drivers can see better on their side.

Right side! I am both a cyclist and a motorist. I freak out when ever I see cyclist on the left side. I think that cyclist who ride on the left side put the motorist and himself in danger. Its an inconvenience to bike on the right side because of the inconsiderate jeepney drivers that cut into your lane but its safer for all the road users. I' m sure you've seen the warning "SLOW VEHICLES STAY ON THE RIGHT SIDE". this includes bikes. This is why bike lanes are always on the right side of the road.

The right side of the road to ride is the RIGHT side. Simple as simple gets. The rights side is the RIGHT. hahhahah yeah those inconsiderate FX and jeepney drivers can be an ass but its much better than hitting the island crashing and getting run over by car from your rear.

Right-side riding can help develop a lot of skills and disciplines needed in bike-commuting. But during heavy traffic, no one will stop us from making the road a giant maze ;D
