like cars, trucks, motorcycles, tricycles, and other vehicles, we bikers share space with them on the road. aside from road, other common factor is traffic rules. as bikers, do you follow traffic rules?

me too sometimes not hehehe. i once read an article on road safety by a philippines cars magazine writer, he said that he hate 2 wheels, be it motorize or pedalize. what he said are:that 2 wheelers drivers(including padalize) are color blind(can't recognize green from red lights), staying on a fast lane, swerving and many others. WTF. but he has a point. we share the same road with 3, 4 , 6, and etc wheels vehicles. i try now to stop in red light. felt kinda weird when i saw bikers dont mind stop light(i suppose to do that too hehehe). but hey we are on the road, one single mistake could have disastrous results.

i think the general rule should be that you consider yourselves as tranportation and not pedestrians, which means you should follow traffic rules. believe me, if you run a red light and bump a pedestrian, or worse, are bumped by a vehicle, most likely you'll be at fault and you wont get any sympathy. bike commuting os dangerous as it is, you shouldn't make it more dangerous by disobeying basic traffic rules.

and if we really want to make a good case for motorists respecting bikers (sharing the road baga), it helps if we set a fine example di ba

what's the sense of traffic laws if we will not follow them? might as well have no laws and just go by "it's free." and king is right, bikes are governed by transportation traffic rules, not pedestrian traffic rules. hence, don't bike on the sidewalk, don't counter flow, and follow traffic lights and road signs.

I stop on a red light , but no one can stop me from counterflowing, riding on side walks etc. ;D. But im a very very good boy on 4 wheels.
Whats most irritating is those newbie drivers on motorcycles counterflowing on high speeds.

yes i do. i try my very best to do so. ;D however there are times when I need to bike using the sidewalk (e.g. at the fort where bikes are not allowed in main thoroughfares). but other than that, i do not counter flow, i stop when its red, i pedal my heart out when it's green and i give way to pedestrians too... and oh thanks to my bell, i alert pedestrians by hitting it

likewise. since i've started biking i've become very disciplined when driving an automobile. i've somehow learned to extend my patience to pedestrians, bikers, and motorist. couldn't say the same when i'm hucking on my bike though.

Following traffic rules? most part of it yes. but if it requires me to do the moves - not to make me pretend I was a motorized vehicle i'll do all mean and ways to bend the rules of course at my own risk.. so for me yes - 90% and no - 10%

question: do we really have laws specific to biking on the streets? if the the answer is none, then how we behave on the streets shall be governed by each of our perception as to what is right based on the existing traffic rules on transportation and pedestrians that we know. bike has wheels but its human powered...that makes it as some sort of dilemma for all involved...you can dismount anytime and walk with your bike and use the zebra lane for crossing the street (some do that too while riding their bikes)....or you can ride it, think of your bike as one of the cars and wait for traffic light to change. right now i just use my common sense and be on the safe side..walang airbag ang bike eh i cant be as fast as motorized vehicles so i yield to them...i use the pedestrian lanes when i need to..dehins pa ako nakakita ng biker na umikot ng malayo dahil lagpas pa sa ortigas yung u-turn ;D yun lang.

same with pitbiker and gbb 90% of the time, yeah i follow traffic rules. stop at red lights, don't make a left turn yet, don't climb that flyover from the fort to buendia. i rarely counterflow, it just sucks when motorcycles still try to get into an inch of road when they know they won't fit. 10% i don't, if i see an opportunity and i know i can go for it, i go. but this takes about 10 times thinking about it. better to ride with the rules on your side than get an angry driver hounding you from behind

it's a question of classifying what we are when we hit the streets. personally, i classify myself riding a transport vehicle everytime i am on saddle and as such is covered by existing traffic rules on transport vehicle and therefore follow traffic rules and regulations (observe traffic light, use proper lane, give way to pedestrian, etc.).
on special cases when i need to use the sidewalk and pedestrian overpass, i alight from my bike and out of the saddle, i consider myself a pedestrian and therefore covered by pedestrian priviliges (i.e use of sidewalk, overpass, etc.)
and on very special cases and as the need arises, i do counterflow traffic but on a very careful way. i try as much as possible not to use the sidewalk when i am pedalling because i find doing such unethical to pedestrians.
but that's me!

in my view that's how we should do it - follow arci's way let us (PinoyMTBiker) - be a good example to other bikers

hehe I remember seeing an episode of mr. Bean where a biker alighted from his bike and pushed it in order to cross on a red light (the peds are go), so mr. Bean got off his mini and pushed it like a pedestrian.

yes. i apply almost the same principle while driving a car. like keeping on the right side of the road, yielding to pedestrians, stopping for red lights, making a sign when turning either right or left and road courtesy is the key. i even 'check six' once in a while.
i have a theory though. for the motorists, either motorcycle or cars or jeeps, they see us cyclist as an obstructions therefore we deserved to be honked. on that, i'd say its okay as long as they wanted to remind that there is a vehicle behind. a friendly tap on the horn would do. whilst, the blaring horn could distract a cyclist making them furious. for the pedestrians, they see us, as an adversary.
riding recklessly would do more harm than good.
check out the links posted by joes. it is very helpful. kudos to you joes.

On the brighter side of life, I think we should ask them - (motorized vehicles using the bike lanes) the same question, especially the bike lane parallel to Barangka in Marikina. right Sir Onie?!? you'd end up even seeing goverment vehicles people doing the same thing.

just few weeks back, on my bike i was running late coming from pasig to a ride meeting place in club 650...i ignored the traffic light at the corner of ortigas and c-5...a bunch of roadies on the ortigas center side waiting for their turn to cross c-5 suddenly came alive with shouts, curses etc... all 20 of 'em more or less hehe! ;D
i was wrong and i regret it...one good thing about it though eh meron palang grupo that's not afraid to show their disapproval to the wrong doings of the their fellow bikers...i salute them...and thanks for reminding me.
note: kids dont try this...very dangerous.

i just had an incident this morning. i was a pedestrian this time. i'm crossing the road towards the city hall of mandaluyong. since the "rotonda" is a one way street, i was looking at the left side for oncoming vehicles. when i was about to cross this guy in a road bike, long pants and polo shirt, shouted "hooooy" then suddenly appeared on my right side, he's riding around 20kph. i missed him by about 6 inches, he's counterflowing and passed on my blind spot. i had to give him the customary "p@#@$@ mo!!!!" looks like he's used to it, he didn't even look back. i do counterflow but i do my best not to be a hassle to pedestrians. normally i ride slow and always alert on the brakes. bros and sis, if you really have to counterflow, make the right judgement, it's everybody else's path, not yours
