i've been bike-commuting everyday for more than a year na, rain or shine from marikina to kapitolyo, pasig. takes about 30 minutes (45 minutes kapag monday). i bring my clothes everyday, and i am lucky enough to have an office with a shower room. and to all the bike commuters out there: "stay safe, stay alert, and stay awake in the office "

I bike to work at least 2 times a week. Usually Tues and Thurs. From my home in Pasig to the office at Cainta. It's about 8 km about 30 minutes one way and I pass through subdivisions. Sometimes It takes a little longer "pag naliligaw ako" ;D. I explore streets and "eskinitas" along the way. Sometimes I would eat along the way, when I see an interesting burgerstand/chibugan. No problems with dress code or not taking a bath.. heh heh.. but I bought a "timba and tabo" so i can take a quick bath.
I plan to bike more, about 3-4 times weekly starting next week.

coolangot:
the bike gods will give you the gift of skill and endurance if you carry out your plan, believe you me!
once you feel the skill and endurance coming in, your next target is to add power, but let's not get ahead, you have a 3-month span to conquer
the wisest investment at this point is a cyclocomp; the data to be looking at is the average speed over distance travelled
be ready to loose weight, even with the chibugan around, remember, i've based my forecast on your future plan
be prepared for the wet season, it will dampen not only the body but the spirit, kung dehins puede wag pilitin, kung kaya, ok!
wish you not only the best but all the luck to carry out your plan!
same goes for the rest of us commuters and those about to!

I've seen some models, some are about 2K and as low as 600 bucks. Still saving up for my more decent (frame, fork.. etc) bike. I plan to have two bikes, one for work and another for play ( no not foreplay ) ;D Guys, the rainy season is just around the corner ;D Any tips for us newbie commuters biking in the rainy season?

Madam, how long would it take to bike Makati to Alabang? Sir, best time i rode with my bike was 53mins -- easy riding was 1hr and a few mins.. @goodboy -- from a 17" frame to a 13" frame, i suppose it should be, but my other bike parts need to be replaced too so i havent noticed much diff.. besides, the marzocchi seemed heavier than my previous RST -- Lessons Learned on Biking to work and back YEsterday, an unexpected downpour of rain caught me off guard in C5. I was just 1/3rd of my way back home .. i have no blinker, i have no lights in front of me. It was zero visibility -- good thing i have clear riding glasses with me else bike riding would be much of a frustration with me all wet -- the uphills gave much challenge that conquering it was fulfilling -- specially the one in market market -- but the downhills, with streets flooded -- and no lights (power failure ~ "blackout" in a certain location) -- were so unsafe that i have to dismount my bike and walk it -- im using disc brakes..but i cant risk it. I was dependent on the tail lights of vehicles in front of me -- which was not much.. i thought "d@mn.. i should get blinkers -- or that cateye 3 bulb light in one of em shops.." I went home all wet -- yet fullfilled after the adventure.. a reminder to ride safe.. always.

i've had my share of riding in the rain. i haven't done it but i recommend getting fenders (cleaning mud from and FS can be very painful). for the rider, ha ha ha, it's just the same as sweating it out, just a whole lot colder. feline13, have you tried amber colored riding glasses? i use it on bad weather and no-daylight rides. i find it better than clear lenses. just sharing

i'm using mojave's, the one that's in the home shopping channel, he he he. cheap, durable, clear, and i carry only one frame and 2 sets of lenses. dark shade for daylight and amber for no daylight. there is a buy 1 take 1 offer for mojave a month ago, i don't know if it's still up. i'm trying to find someone to split the price. anyway, RP, Nike and Adidas are offering changeable lenses now. I don't know of Oakley has one.

FELINE - how's your foot, sis? hope it heals up fast for the race! sayang naman, galing galing mo na (according to the witnesses heheh, i'm still absent during the race e aaarrrgghh!).
biking in the rain, what i always watch out for is puddles. kasi they might be covering a nasty hole or crack on the road, that could throw you off-balance if your tire hits it wrong. the thing is, when i swerve to avoid puddles, i also have to watch out for the vehicle behind me, because the driver may not be anticipating i'd swerve. as far as he's concerned kasi he could just go over that puddle, so he may not understand why a biker would avoid it.

kakainggit ka dasaint! i, too, wouldn't let that kind of opportunity pass. a smaller salary is nothing compared to the benefits that you get. haaaayyyy... mag-imagine na lang ako na kunyari eh nasa trail din ako kapag dumadaan ako sa pasig... ehehehe at kunyari eh beach yung ilog...

Ma'am, good to hear you found a nice & safe route. Will you use "Cat" or "Violet" ? ;D I have one of those cheapo blinkers, but I'll probably add or modify that blinker. "tumutungo" yung blinker whenever I pass through humps or uneven roads. I'll probably add a head light as well. I think the key to riding safe in the rain is having lots or active lighting in front and at the back, and riding slower than your usual pace.
