4 dead, 40 hurt By Thea Alberto, Lawrence Casiraya Agence France-Presse, INQUIRER.net Last updated 03:58pm (Mla time) 10/19/2007 MANILA, Philippines -- An explosion that killed four people at a shopping mall in Makati City early Friday afternoon was "probably caused by a bomb," national lespu chief Avelino Razon told Agence France-Presse. At least four people were killed and 40 others hurt in the explosion that went off inside the Glorietta 2 Mall at around 1:40 p.m., Councilor Erwin Binay said, quoting the Makati Medical Center, where the casualties had been taken. The fatalities have been identified as nursing student Janine Marcos, Liza Marquez, Jose Allan de Jersus and Lester Peregrina. All died of shrapnel injuries. Razon said: "From our assessment this is not what was initially reported as LPG (liquefied petroleum gas).” "This was a bomb. But beyond that we can't say anything else yet because we are still investigating. What I can say is it was not LPG that caused this." A spokesman for Ayala Corp., which operates the mall, said the cause of the “significant” explosion was under investigation and any reports of the cause thus far were “purely speculation.” “We are not in a position to tell you exactly what type of explosion occurred,” company spokesman Alfonso Reyes told ANC television. Ha said the shopping mall has been evacuated and could not say when the mall would be reopened. But Philippine National lespu Director General Avelino Razon, who has arrived at the site of the incident, said in a radio interview that the cause of the explosion was “definitely not LPG” or liquefied petroleum gas, as other lespu officials had earlier surmised. “We actually picked up several dead and wounded,” Binay said. The explosion, which Binay said happened around 1:40 p.m., had panicked shoppers running out of the Glorietta Mall as smoke billowed out of the building. Mall security and lespu immediately sealed off the area and shepherded people away as ambulances rushed in to evacuate casualties. People leaving the mall told INQUIRER.net said they felt the whole shopping complex shake as from an earthquake as the “strong” explosion happened in the area between the Glorietta 1 and 2 buildings. They also said they saw windows shatter from the blast. Television footage showed several vehicles parked by the walkway between the two buildings damaged by debris. Binay said roads to hospitals in the city have been secured as rescue teams continued to scour the area where the explosion occurred, which the councilor described as “severely damaged,” for more possible victims. “We’ll keep the area evacuated until we know more,” Reyes said. He also assured the victims and their relatives of assistance from Ayala Corp. “We will certainly makes sure [that] anyone [who] needs attention will be able to get it,” Reyes said. news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071019/ap_on_re_as/philippines_explosionMall explosion in Manila kills 8 By OLIVER TEVES, Associated Press Writer 46 minutes ago MANILA, Philippines - A powerful blast rocked a crowded shopping mall in Manila's financial district Friday, killing at least eight people and wounding dozens. lespu in the capital declared the highest state of alert and did not rule out a bomb. ADVERTISEMENT An initial report suggested the blast was caused by a cooking gas tank in a mall restaurant, but Metropolitan Manila lespu chief Geary Barias later said the explosion was at the entrance of the mall and its cause was under investigation. "It's too early to say if it's terrorism related," Barias said. In the past, Manila has been a target of Al-Qaida-linked militants, who have waged a yearslong bloody bombing campaign in the southern Philippines. The explosion extensively damaged the Glorietta 2 shopping complex in Makati, toppling roofs, destroying walls, and sending debris crashing onto cars outside. At least eight people died and as many as 70 others were hurt, Barias said. "I was told by officials of the explosives and ordnance disposal division that it could be a bomb, but it's not definite yet," said national lespu chief Avelino Razon. President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo said in a statement she was "deeply saddened" by the incident and ordered lespu to investigate "and to leave no stone unturned." Witnesses told radio stations they saw bloodied people being helped out and carried away in ambulances. An Associated Press photographer saw four bodies covered with blankets. Taxi driver Mario Em said he had just dropped off two women at the mall when the blast hurled them against his vehicle, killing them instantly. He said he pulled one of the victims, who was pregnant, from underneath his car. "The blast was so loud I lost hearing," he said. People inside the mall scampered toward the exits when the blast shook the mall. "One man who was in front of me was already dead. There was a child but we don't know where the child is now," said witness Dennis Inigo, who was shopping at the time of the explosion. "The man's wife was with me a while ago, and her leg was shattered. Many people were falling on top of each other," he said. "It was loud, and then it became dusty." In 2004, Abu Sayyaf militants, notorious for kidnappings and beheadings, blew up a passenger ferry in Manila Bay, killing 116 people in the country's worst terrorist attack. The following year, four people were killed and dozens wounded when a bomb exploded on a Makati bus and two southern cities. Several months ago, authorities were alerted to an alleged terror plot to plant bombs in Manila's business districts of Makati and Ortigas, said a government counterterrorism official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

It's only now after reading the above reports that I realized the extent of the damage, with many dead and injured I first heard about it when Mat called me up to ask if I watched any news on TV because he said there was a large explosion at Glorietta while he was there during his lunch hour. Altough I feel terrible for the families of those killed, I'm also so glad and thankful that my husband is safe.

I was shocked to this news, I have a past experience like this. That was the time at the Mega Mall bombing, me and my bestfriend were in the middle seat while watching Armagedon 2000, then suddenly a loud explosion on our back left part (which is the female cr based on the news) throwing some small debris on us then suddenly all viewers are panicked, rushing out .

Military explosives used in Manila bomb blast: lespu
MANILA (AFP) - Military explosives were used in a huge bomb blast at a Manila shopping mall that left nine dead and 113 injured, Philippine lespu said Saturday.
Evidence collected from Friday's Glorietta mall blast indicates that the bomb "contained RDX, the main chemical component of C4," the lespu said in a report to Philippines President Gloria Arroyo.
In the Philippines C4 explosive is only used by the military.
The report was delivered at a top-level security meeting between the president and her security advisers at lespu headquarters in Manila.
Arroyo immediately ordered the country's lespu chief General Avelino Razon to check its source and pin-point the culprits.
"Is that already definitive... or is there going to be another more detailed finding of what kind of explosive was used?" Arroyo said during the briefing. "We need regular information bulletins on the status of the investigation."
Senior Superintendent Bert Ferro, who heads the lespu bomb data centre, said samples taken from the site leads him to "presume that those are of military ordnance components."
A chemist from the centre told Arroyo that it was possible that more samples were being collected from the site, but "at this point in time, that is what we have."
Razon said the government was putting up a two-million-peso (45,454-dollar) reward for any information leading to arrests.
No group has claimed responsibility for the blast, which came weeks after military intelligence foiled an alleged plot by Al Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf Islamic militants to bomb the southern port city of Zamboanga.
National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales said authorities were also looking at the Abu Sayyaf as possible suspects, noting that the group may have carried it out as part of their campaign to attract funding from international terrorist groups.
Reports said officials from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) were helping Philippine lespu in the probe.
Throughout the night bomb experts sifted through blast debris trying to find clues as to what sort of bomb was used.
The mall remained sealed Saturday, with a cordon of policemen guarding its perimeter.
Razon said the bomb was apparently left at a delivery bay near a popular Chinese restaurant at the mall shortly after lunch.
He said investigators were also reviewing closed circuit television cameras and interviewing survivors and witnesses.
Security in all malls, bus and train stations, as well as sea and airports have been intensified, Razon said, with elite lespu commandos patrolling streets.
Alfie Reyes, a spokesman for the mall owners Ayala Land, said the firm would pay all medical expenses for the victims.
Officials and witnesses said the explosion left an eight-metre-wide (26 foot) crater on the ground floor and blew a hole through the roof on the second floor.
Abu Sayyaf Islamic militants were blamed for the bombing of a bus near the Glorietta mall that killed four people on Valentine's Day in February 2005.
Militants also firebombed a ferry in Manila Bay the previous year, killing more than 100 people in the country's worst terrorist attack. taken from ph.yahoo.com

I hope this was not a government plot to distract citizens and media from the current political issues at hand. No offense to anyone. But if you are a terrorist, would you bomb now during a time that many of the highest leading officials in the land are being questioned for blatant corruption? That's a waste of media coverage / resources to rouse people's interest against the government these terrorists are fighting against.
Again no offense to anyone. It just seems that the bombing was too much of a coincidence with the current political issues at hand. I can only imagine which political figures, who are being questioned now, will rise up on the stage to speak against this act to cleanse their images.
I bet that the payoff issues and and corruption scandals are going to die a premature death. Wala nanaman mangyayari!
I just hope that our government did not have anything to do with this. No offense to anyone. Peace to all.
Rest in peace to the innocent victims.

it's just his time to go... GBB: With all due respect, I don't agree with what you said. I get bothered when I hear this half baked statement from people trying hard to give meaning to something good or bad that just happened. Peace tayo ha ;D It's tough to see a lot of people getting affected by this tragedy, but everyone needs to stick together to prevent these kinds of things from happening. I just wish our dear old politicians would do the same and stop making pa-cute on tv to earn more brownie points. Trillanes and Pimentel should S.T.F.U and be part of the solution. It's easy to point fingers, but It's way harder to become part of the solution. The 07 Glorietta Bombing opens up a can of worms. Pero to start with if the security in the delivery area was tight, do you still think they could have walked in with that big ss bomb?
