Let's help stop global warming. We might not observe it, but we do certainly feel it, unless you're numb. The sun is getting hotter, winter getting shorter, more storms... more violent storms. (From Wikipedia) The predicted effects of global warming for the environment and for human life are numerous and varied. The main effect is an increasing global average temperature. From this flow a variety of resulting effects, namely, rising sea levels, altered patterns of agriculture, increased extreme weather events, and the expansion of the range of tropical diseases. In some cases, the effects may already be occurring, although it is generally difficult to attribute specific natural phenomena to long-term global warming. * en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effects_of_global_warming * There is more than one way to help stop global warming. Minimize pollution too, check your cars exhaust, it might be one of those cars you hate because they give some awfully black smoke. Since i became a cyclists, i became more concerened on the environment. I became more aware of what is happening, and it's not good. If we think it's impossible, it's not, if only we'll start from ourselves and influence others, then that would be a big progress. We're not suffering now, or maybe we are a bit, but the future generation will be the one to suffer more, just like us. Do we like that to happen? www.stopglobalwarming.org/www.greenpeace.org/www.climatecrisis.net/

sir,
i believe a lot of environmental group like wwf, and the ngo that organizes the sibol ride as well as the tour of the fireflies, not to mention the save the lamesa project is into this kind of environmental awareness thingy. all (PinoyMTBiker) we need to do is to support full blast and just highlight the need to stop global warming by perhaps displaying banners to its effect when we support and join the rides or perhaps PinoyMTBiker organizing itself as a "solid group" (i know kasi that PinoyMTBiker supports cause-oriented/environmental awareness rides but on a non-organized level) complete with banners, t-shirts, etc. if only to get the message across.
attention mods, comments please.
thanks sirs!

Raising public awareness on climate change is great but let's not just focus on the problems but more importantly, of what can be done, by each and every individual - that's the latest campaign by klima (Climate Change Center in the Philippines) on getting everyone involved with the 'low-carbon diet'. you may have an audit of your energy use to see how much carbon dioxide are emitted per person in your household - you may use this GHG (greenhouse gas) calculator for a more thorough audit : www.klima.ph/resources/MO/08_LearningModules/ghg_calculator/primer/Energy_Audit.xls. car emissions are the most notorious source of carbon dioxide that contributes to global warming. in fact, in dialogues on mitigating climate change, transportation is always in the agenda. that's also the ultimate reason why, we in the NGO sector keeps pushing for mass transportation (MRT, BRT) and non-motorized transport (pedestrian and bikeways). bike-commuters are doing a great part in arresting global warming. if you're curious how much carbon dioxide is emitted by your vehicle, use www.klima.ph/resources/MO/08_LearningModules/ghg_calculator/primer/Trans.xlsanother way to stop global warming is to reduce, reuse and recycle...and throw as little garbage as we can to the dumpsite. garbage contribute very gravely to climate change because it produces methane when decomposing. methane is 21 times the carbon dioxide equivalent. some dumpsite try to harness this methane gas and produce electricity (e.g., gas-to-power generation in the Payatas dumpsite) from it. but that's end-of-pipe solution and the technology is yet to be perfected. it still pays to minimize garbage in the individual level. those are the little things that we can do to stop global warming in our own terms. let's just hope the Kyoto Protocol delivers bigger results. commitment of all signatories is to have 5% reduction of GHG emissions by the year 2008-2012 (not including the Philippines though. only for developed countries, except US who haven't ratified the Kyoto Protocol yet).

anybody ever read Rainbox Six? If I remember right, the terrorists there were ultra-environmentalists and they believed that the only way to save the planet was to take out the very scourge causing all these environmental damage . . . man.

Raising public awareness on climate change is great but let's not just focus on the problems but more importantly, of what can be done, by each and every individual - . i agree with cheenky that raising public awareness on climate change is not focusing much on the problem but instead on doing or sharing our part on solving global warming. the solution starts on our own backyard: i don't own a car and commutes using our mass transport system(mrt, bus, jeep, etc.) so by circumstances i don't contribute much on the carbon emission thingy. in our house, we practice waste segregation like we separate recyclable waste as much as we can and sells bottles, plastics, papers to those bakal-bote people. not only do we help the environment but also helps this bakal-bote people with their livelihood and my bunso who is in charge of collecting the segregated waste is very happy everytime he makes some extra moolah from selling those recyclable waste in the factory that i manage, we segregate recyclable wastes and sells cartons, plastics and what not. and with the money being used to buy the prizes for our yearly x-mas raffle. we have already given prizes of washing machine, television set, audio system out of the sale of this recyclable wastes. and my people at the factory are vigilant when it comes to waste segregation because they know that the more they segregate, the bigger the prize becomes. we kinda.........walk the talk ;D ;D
