from mounteverest.net:
“One guy who beat the odds was Dale Abenojar. You will have read about him on my blogs and many Philippine news agencies and followers have asked me about him, so here is the latest: On 12th May I saw him going up with a Sherpa. He was dress in full down suit (at 6500m!) and going very slowly. On May 18, I saw him, again on a yak, going down, just below middle camp. I was going up, but while passing he said: 'Harry, I summited May 15 and lost one toe”. So the good thing is that he is still alive and can return to his wife and children ( I had given him less than 50% survival chance, but Everest can be strange in her decisions...). Whether he actually summited he should prove himself, I have no further info about that...”
- the missing toe is not enough evidence, even i can lose a toe in an ice plant... let's hear the judgment of himalayan archive first...;D ;D ;D

1. mount pulag: he drove his motocross to mount pulag's grassland.. we know that this is an alpine meadow & it is hard for the plantlife to regenerate... this is against the leave no trace pirinciple...
2. mount tapulao: he brought sports unlimited crew up the mountain in 4wd... the community was angered by the arrogance of the group...closed the trail up mount tapulao with fallen trees...
3. mount apo: disassembled his motocross to be ported up the summit of mount apo, then assembled for photo ops... it was disassembled to be brought down...
4. mount halcon: 6am start of trek... had cramps on the first leg of the 4day climb... cried his heart out that he cannot walk anymore... his HALMS guides took his equipment to camp 1, arrived at camp 1 around 9:00pm, regular hiking hour to camp 1 is only for 8 hours... went down the next day... boasted he climbed halcon, 1 day up & 1 day down... he got the ire of the HALMS group & UPM...
many, many more stories....cheers!!!!

here are pix of romy for us mountain bikers: Jan08. Biking around Mall of Asia / SM near Promenade, ~9km from where I live -- 1 of the few remaining safe road-biking places in the Metro. Soon this will be another D Fort occupied with lots of cars. For now it's a good place to bike around, it offers ~4km loop of continuous biking, and the air is still ok (it's near the bay). I experimented carrying a small weight plate (10lbs) in my pack, and the total ~40km did hurt my sleeping muscles a bit, plus it gave me a sored butt. It was cloudy-comfortable tho, not the miserable hot or soaking-wet condition that I've hoped for (to increase my tolerance to difficult conditions). June 4 - Mt Biking somewhere in Rizal. Biking-out means "taking out your bike" - it doesn't necessarily mean riding it mwehe. Pix: one of the steep sections that doesn't look too steep, grrr. Me as the 2nd struggler...(the photographer just threw up, out of exhaustion, b4 taking out his cam for this pix). (photo courtesy of Henry N.) Time: Noontime, and already in wreck-state. (i was resting, not posing). And later, we have to bike all the way down to Cogeo, then on to Marikina Riverbanks for lunch, then (me) on to Makati --& that's where i'll die.. well, sort of.. Bunch of dirt-bags from UPMountaineers (Team La Galag, and my team 'Badinger3'). Plus a Buddhist monk (my left) who rode a bike for 6 months in Tibet.

Grabe, jaymz, puso mo... That was one very infomative narration for a lot of members here. I only have one story about him.
We were shooting an episode for Gameplan in the late 90's. We used a rover as the transportation to Montalban. I can't remember if it was already his rover or the Gameplan production got a rep from rover & we were lent the truck. Parang di pa ata sa kanya.
Anyway, we had a lot of re-takes of different scenes. Then in one break we had in between takes where we were starting the hike up the wall for Dianne Castillejo to climb. Dale asked me, in what seemed like a very serious question with no hint of kidding on his part, "Ano difference ng oval biner sa isang yan?" He then pointed at a bentgate biner used for the bottom half of a quickdraw. See, I already heard stories about him - even from Bubut - but I was still taken a back by the whole thing. Here's the guy who was hounding the government for sponsorship to climb Everest but he doesn't know the difference between biners. For those who are not climbers here, it's the same as asking what's the difference between a knobby tire and road tire while you're claiming you're a World Cup Downhill rider.
Oh... & I did explain it to him. Pero parang confused pa rin sya. I just let it go. Heck, we were shooting for Gameplan! Paki ko kung ano intindi nya...
EDIT: Correction lang po. It was Sports Unlimited, not Gameplan.

Will there be another expediton to Mt. everest?
a team of all pinoy mt climbers without the help/assitance of foreigners? except sherpas, that would be truly great.
i understand leo oracion was with with another foreign group of climbers and not with his pinoy team members when he summitted.
the first filipino to summit mt. everest was assisted by foreigners.
someone said 2007 is the real sched/booking, for this all pinoy expedition to everest.

From Romy Garduch's Blog:
Sunday, June 4. 2006 Back in Manila It’s good to be back in Manila -- warm weather, cold beer and coke, real tinola and sinigang, umm parties and gimmicks.. Aahh, Home!
First of all, SALAMAT sa inyong lahat!! Thanks for all the support, for the interest, and well wishes and congratulatory notes. I’ve never been so overwhelmed by messages (especially blog comments hehehe). It’s truly surprising to see a big interest from other (non-sport) communities, it’s amazing that a lot of people talk about Everest when a few years ago, nobody seems to care about our previous climbs in the Himalaya. Salamat talaga!! =)
Live the Journey I’m inviting you to watch our ‘documentary film’, this will be shown on June 11/06- Sunday Night Box Office, GMA Channel 7, 10.30pm. This is our way of sharing this awesome experience with you, re-live the journey with us!
Climb May 2006 is probably one of the biggest (if not the biggest) shining moment in the history of Philippine mountaineering. Congratulations to all of us! This success is something we all share, without the public support, our climb will be just another quiet and lonely escapade. I congratulate all summiteers (Leo and Pastor), as well as the media folks who were on-site with us - working above 17,400ft, battling cold weather and thin air – just to cover the climb and share the experience back home. It’s truly a remarkable accomplishment for them as well.
We were lucky this year, and I hope that this will be a good start and a big boost for our athletes and adventurers, as we continue our quest to discover the uncharted world (Filipino-wise).
The Cause The climb may be over, but our campaign is just starting. Our success should not end in just hearing summit news, we’ll share this success to the needy and we’ll need your help. Thru Kapuso Foundation, we’ll try to address some of these needs, we’ll raise money ‘thru this climb’ so we can bring more significance to it.
1. You may help by donating any amount. Contact Kapuso foundation 9289351, 9284299; or thru me - email ph_climbforacause@yahoo.com. I’m still asking The North Face shops if they can put a donation box somewhere. With or without that, I think you can still leave your envelop there, addressed to Romi (‘for Kapuso’), and I’ll pick it up from there. Just advise me via email if you’re doing so. We’ll report figures in this blog from time to time. 2. You may also buy a souvenir climb shirt (“Pinoy sa Tuktok ng Mundo”) from any TNF - The North Face shop (Rockwell, Shangrila-Mall, Glorietta, Mall of Asia, Davao?) half or P300 will go to Kapuso, and the otehr P300 will cover the cost of producing the shirt. (Shirt price at 600php I think)." 3. We’re still planning for other gimmicks (exhibits, etc.) and we’ll keep you posted for updates.
All for now, I hope to give another update on our future activities sometime soon.
Mabuhay and Pinoy!!!
Garduch

dale abenojar arrived the other day, looking ragged and with a bandaged toe. he also brought with him his wheelchair-bound sherpas who will undergo treatment for frostbite here in the philippines...di ba mas alam ng mga taga-tibet maggamot ng frostbite? ang napofrostbite lang siguro dito sa atin ung mga dinidilaan ung freezer ng ref. i don't know.
news also said dale will release evidence of his summit bid "in time".

you know guys: i pity the guy, but i pity more his family, esp. his children... if sana his 'image', fitness & 'character' that is known in the climbing community is otherwise, it will not be hard for us to accept his feat... if ms. elizabeth hawley of the himalayan archive will not confirm his summit of everest, how can the filipino climbing community accept that he's the first one to summit it or just climbed it... sorry dale... i have seen you hike (just hike), even my pregnant wife can outwalk you... to his one and only supporter... i intentionally forget your name... dont put your foot in the line dude, its a hopeless case...

dale is so desperate ..he brings his sherpas home for what??....its more (believable) if he just brags that he reach the summit via south route.....i mean its so impossible for a guy with no alpine climbing experience to survive the north side.....northside claims even the most experienced climbers due to its difficulty...
