dang! i thought there were only few mtbikers here that also love diving!! guess i was wrong! tara na mg peeps! lets dive!! whoopi - I'm currently taking up Advanced Scuba diving course in NAUI. thanks to our US peace corps volunteer in our office who is also a NAUI dive instructor, i got it dead cheep! our class hasn't started yet but we have the manuals already. in fact, I'm gonna continue reading it after i log out here! hopefully i pass this course. and if i did, i hope he'll give us rescue course before his contract ends. I'll also try to ask him about that NAUI jump your talking about ;D @alphabot - I'm also interested in marine studies! in fact, thats the main reason why i moved here in Cebu. you know the situation back there in our hometown, you cant get these kind of opportunities there. not that I'm saying I'm getting the most of it here coz i ended up as an admin employee. but at least, i get to join every once in a while on monitoring trips and get to be exposed on coastal resource mgt. plus, I'm here in Cebu! dive spots are just at my backyard! btw, i graduated with a degree in BS biology only. so i still have lots of stuff to learn. ;D

i've been told that some of the best dive sites in the philippines are in jolo, sulu. in fact, you can dive at the pier there and you'd already be amazed at the quality of the sealife they have. problem is going there. i've dived in sta. cruz island in zamboanga city and it's such a sorry site. nothing but dead corals from 30 feet to 80 feet. but the best site i've been to is in saranggani province. shore dive lang but 50 feet from the shore is a wall that goes down to 600 feet (sabi lang sa akin ;D) 600 feet? ?? dang! now thats deep!!

DM course yata ang 1KM swim in open water. 500m for Rescue, it think. Advanced is just night diving, drift, navigation and some corny modules like peak performance buoyancy. well at least sa aming lowly PADI divers eheheh. i still can't deploy a balloon properly haha.
GARY, i envy you! if i were to imagine a lifestyle that i want, it's doing coastal resource management work, fish census, coral surveys. you spend hours on a boat, you bake in the sun, you don't dress up for work, you show up in clothes almost ready to jump in the water, and when you get out you drip-dry, no need to comb your hair, you go straight to dinner without changing, eat lots of seafood, your constant friends are the boatmen, occasionally you get a text message from other friends back in civilization, you don't care that there's been another coup and the country has a new president. fun! ;D
i think it's in cebu where they're running a project on seahorse survey. are you taking marine studies in San Carlos? they've a good program. but better daw in Siliman in Dumaguete. magkano ba cheap flights to cebu now? parang i wanna go and dive heheh.
quickly checks with Cebu Pac
whoa! Php288 one way tickets! Php576 roundtrip! kaya lang tax is Php2,146.72 hahaha!

Len, yup, did a few volunteer work for them sa Batangas dati. pahirapan sila sa funds eh, the project we used to volunteer for (Balayan Coral Survey something) wala na, i think the Babuyan Humpback project is also in the red (if not altogether wala na). money is going into climate change research daw kasi, it seems the more pressing concern.

Php288 one way tickets! Php576 roundtrip! kaya lang tax is Php2,146.72 hahaha! yup, advanced course means exactly just like that. only that NAUI gives extra attention to every detail. and yes thats exactly what happens to us whenever i get to join. usually 3 to 7 days out on field, 2-3 dives per day. (but i only experienced 3 days straight only) ;D and again you were right, there is an NGO here that deals with preserving seahorses and their habitat. its called Project Seahorse. its actually a partner of the NGO im working in right now. you should check out their website. they are currenty looking for volunteer divers for the spring season monitoring in bohol. a 2month long expedition!! im also thinking of going back to school but im tied up right now in the office (stupid admin jobs) and lastly, about that NAUI jump you were saying. thats actually a fact! its included in the diving instructor course. i asked my instructor bout it and they actually did it. and get this, you have to do it within a time limit! graabe!

NAUI jump sa Diving instructor course? But they made us do it sa Open Water 1 pa lang I think people who are naturally buoyant would find it harder I thought the part where they shut down your air undrwater and you had to slowly swim up to the surface while exhaling was more difficult. Or baka mas panic inducing lang
