sir, that looks like a good mt biking destination. i'm game on weekends to do this. most likelyl I'll do overnight in Clark if this pushes through. sched na! a couple of questions though: 1.) I assume you can't take a bath in the lake in the photo above? Sulfur content? 2.) Any bad side effects of riding your bike amidst all that lahar?

boss jon, been reading up on this, and from my limited research this is what I could figure out "From Brgy. Sta. Juliana, on board your 4 x 4 jeep, take to a rough and tumble ride along a rocky path and fast streams through the O’Donnell streambed for an hour or so. Stop at Sitio Dapili (vehicles are not allowed to go beyond this point). Leave your vehicle and take a 12-km. walk along a bed of rocks and fast streams up to the crater for about 2 hours. Be awed by the spectacular view of the crater lake. Spend an hour on top and take your light meal. Then trek back the same way. Good news: there is no mountain climbing along the O’Donnell river except for an easy 40-degree incline towards the crater." So I'm thinking instead of riding those 4x4s we ride instead our 2x2s to Sitio Dapili. For the 12km trek to the crater, is it still possible to bike this? All in all it might be cheaper coz we won't be renting the 4x4s. Btw, also found out there's a Pinatubo Wellness Spa at Bgy Sta Juliana, which uses volanic materials for their spa treatments (sand bath, sulfur mud pack, etc) plus various massages. Ano, schedule na natin? How about next weekend?

pinatubo is bikeable from sta.juliana upto banguntungol (small aeta makeshift village) from there another 8 kms of bike pushing and rock scrumbling upto the crater ...sir marcs its safe to take a dip sa crater ..but dont go to far out ....and bring lots of sun block. you can contact DREAMTREKS for guides they dont allow outsiders to pass in sta.juliana try this www.geocities.com/raintreking/ite/pinatubo.html

I've heard that a tour guide is a must there. You won't be allowed w/o one. So consider transportation, food and accomodation for a tour guide.

That looks exciting!!!
I wish I had the time as you younger guys have to go exploring. All I have now are half-day outings in Maarat on Saturdays and if lucky also a fast interval roadride in QC Circle or UP on Sundays. Workload and demands of a growing family ...
Hey Jon, being a oldtimer in backpacking, what's a good backpack to buy for a 3-day camping? My son and I are having a camping for their KAB Scout and I was looking at some stuff at Store Shop and Bombproof in Galleria. I was kind of interested in the Conquer Ridge Runner going for about 1.5K. Are there any good shops around the Pasig or QC area I can visit. Am also looking for a tent, considering Coleman 7x7 weathertec. Is it any good?
Thanks!

hey, i've been to pinatubo, let's see. yeah it's bikeable but be ready for a lot of sand on your bikes. best time to go there is summer, we camped there and it rained during the night, the river crossing was deeper and faster the following morning. what was about 5 inches of river the first day is knee-deep the second day. radical1962, pasig...you can go to habagat at megamall. for qc there's estong pang outdoor, i think they changed the name already. it's near cubao if my memory serves me right. anyway conquer is a good brand, reliable and inexpensive. btw, err....will you be bringing everything but the kitchen sink? i have 75 + 15 liter backpack Habagat Venado II, i can lend it to you if you don't plan on getting a pack. most big packs cost around 3K and up. tent, well....he he he......the 7x7 will hurt like H@LL after 2 hours on you back, i've carried once before in Pinatubo, and i'm not carrying one again. try looking at outdoor shops other than store shop. there's a tadpole type tent, costs around 1.5 - 3K, then just get a ground sheet you can send me email or sms if you want to borrow stuff a.fernandez@weserv.com.ph or 0919 6254370. if it's one time use, i can lend you a few things like backpack, stove (it needs priming but i can teach ), cookset.....

sir radical,
if your gonna use it just for this trip alone, my suggestion is the same with anthrax and tofi: borrow stuff instead. sayang eh. if you dont use it that often, it might deteriorate as well as in the case of cars and rubber shoes and sayang pa ang cash na pwedeng pang upgrade, hehe. i can lend you my backpack (kelty zuni) which is i think is 60+ liters of space, good enough for 3-days and more. i actually use a The North Face 40-liter backpack for overnight trips. my tent though is a bit difficult to setup so i guess you can either borrow from anthrax or tofi for that. for the stove i can lend you a friendly stove, the one they use in restaurants that have shabu-shabu.
but if your looking to buy one, indeed conquer is a good brand and trek as well (located near quirino cor taft lrt). trek was my first backpack. its still alive. bought it back in 1998. habagat is the premier of philippine backpacks and the first ones to make backpacking backpacks here in the phils but its a bit pricey.
a good tent to look for is the tad pole type, a lightweight, streamlined, sturdy 3-pole setup tent. some are made locally, some are branded. locally made tents can cost somewhere from 3.5k to 5k for a 2-person tent, 3-season tent. try buying a tent at expedition plus at mile long building near makati cinema square. the guy who owns the place will patiently describe to you what you need. i've seen him done that. great service kahit newbie ka. and prices are reasonable. dont get a coleman tent. heavy and not durable. i've seen one tear apart due to fierce winds in mt. tarac somewhere in bataan.
if you need a stove get the one that's user friendly. get the cartridge type, the ones that can be loaded by butane canisters. i personally use a multi fuel stove but i find it cumbersome to use. store shop has goodlines of butane-cartridge powered stoves. hope this helps.
here's some numbers:
EXPEDITION PLUS: 8944092 TREK: 4001512
trek will do. affordable dun, hehe.

Guys!
Thanks for all the offer. Will probably buy my own backpack and tent since the whole family goes on out of the province trips very often and I need a new backpack (my old one is too small for 2-3 day trips was bought about 7 years ago) and a new tent.
The contacts are most welcome. I will be going the rounds to check them all out.
THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE HELP!!! See you on the trails!

FYI, the guy who owns Expedition Plus is Sir Oca, he's very good. As what mountguitars said, you'll have an instant BMC if you're a newbie in climbing. there's one more, Camp-O, owned by Ohmar, it's in Citiland 8 in Buendia. Unfortunately I don't have the contact number. But if you're on Buendia coming from South superhighway going to Pasong Tamo, you'll see Citiland at your right side. There's a shop at the first floor, anyway, you'll see the familiar logo of The North Face on the window facing Buendia Hmm...family outings + tents = veeery big tent. but yeah, i think you can manage by getting smaller tents than a single big one. oh yeah, one more. if possible, get tents with aluminum poles they are better than the fiberglass poles that are common in local tents.

possible biking destinations: mt tapulao in zambales or mt ugo and pulag in benguet..gulugod baboy also a nice biking destination Been to all this location, Tapulao or High Peak, is famous among 4x4 enthusiast. Mt. Ugo.... check the archives, if I remeber right someone from AMCI posted their rides there, dunno if its Eboy or someone else. pix ng climbPulag from the ranger stn lang pede i-bike. Dont dream of doing it from Akiki ;D Gulugod... it'll be bikeable if you try from the other side of the mountain, but from commonly used trail from a resort...buhat ka na after the road. UNLESS...nabago na ang daan dun.

Nice info you got there Jon. Actually when I started climbing, the back then trend was having the humongous pack you can carry, like you I have a Venado II. The thing was so huge the everytime I use it, I end up carrying something for someone else since "may space pa" After our BMC, climbing has been getting smarter, the lighter the pack and equipment has been the aim....hey we have weightweenies too in mountaineering. Got myself lightest gear I can find in the market, TNF Prophet 65 & Sierra Designs Tent....with matching outfits to boot. Gastos...parang bike! Shoes pa! For stove, I got rid of my Campingaz and bought an MSR Dragonfly. Its not lightweight pero zero waste since wlang canister after. I stopped buying mountaineering gears when I started building my bike. ermmm guess I'll start buying again since we're aiming for Alpine climb one of this days.... mahal ang alpine gear

butch,
way to go. yan ang mountaineering- high altitudes, thin air, snow, ropes, crampons, etc. go for it dude!
and yes, using liquid fueled stoves saves the environment from pollution becoz all you need is lighter fluid (white gas) or sometimes kerosene, unleaded fuel, avaition fuel etc (if your stove is multi fuel that is). zero waste becoz there's no empty cansiter to throw away.

butch, way to go. yan ang mountaineering- high altitudes, thin air, snow, ropes, crampons, etc. go for it dude! Yeah! High Altitude sickness as well...succumbed to lots of times na. There's one instance, I can see the summit which is about few hours walk but I cant go on anymore since getting vomitous (not just nauseous) every meter I climb... thats here in Japan ha, never experienced that in my years of climbing in Ph.

hmm...i wish i could go beyond 10,000 ft highest i got ever was Pulag. okay back to topic, it think it's possible to ride to pico de loro if you're coming from Batangas side. Cavite side is full of fences, you'll have to carry your bike thourh horizontal spaces between the fences.

Btw how much does a jeep cost from baguio to ranger station? the last ive heard bout the jeepneys from baguio to the ranger station' is that they charge 7000 per trip (two-way) kaya its wise to climb pulag ng mas maraming participants..my last climb on mt pulag was november 2004 and the total budget we had was 1200 per climber/participant

there is a new conquer shop in robinsons pioneer (beside a bike shop). pricing is same as with their monumento shop, and you can ask for discounts if youre buying conquer brands. the shop is at the third floor, turn left from main entrance, right side from escalator. 2nd flr right side if coming from mrt side entrance. try rei.com for tips in buying a pack and tent and other outdoor stuff. check your considerations: where do you go (beach or mountain, wet or dry weather etc), what do you bring etc before buying. goodluck.
