As a child who grew up in the city, I've always looked forward to the season of Lent. It is of course a time which signals the ending of the school year and the beginning of summer vacation. A time most anticipated by the young and old alike, wherein families and friends journey together and "ideally" contemplate on the life and sufferings of Christ and the life that we live at present.
That is of course "ideally" and we do not live in an ideal world. So we pack our bags and luggage trying not to forget the latest summer and swim wear that you just bought, sun block and shades to protect your skin, cell phones, mp4, laptop, ipod, psp, digital camera, latest magazines and "God forbid, the majong table" to keep one entertained; bottles of mineral/distilled water, wine, beer and juices along with the freshest fish and seafood from the market: sugpo, salmon, crabs, squid, tuna, clams and a few other sea creatures which I could not spell out... it is lent! And we're abstaining, so meat is out of the list.
And so, we make that yearly exodus out of the city. Complaining of how uncomfortable traveling for 4-8 hours in a cramped car/suv, how long the line was at the bus terminal, that you didn't get that window seat you wanted in the airplane going to Boracay or how crowded and unsafe it was in the ferry. Once you reached your destination by mid day, it was too hot... The line at Mcdo is just too long and the service crew at Starbucks gave you a hot caramel machiatto instead of a cold one with double whip cream.
Come to think of it... There is no Starbucks or Mcdo. Grrr...
And worst is probably finding out that most of the establishments are closed. Good thing that someone brought the Magic Sing and the casino is still open. Thank God!(probably the only time you remembered Him) The hotel has wi-fi, while you update your friendster account as your feet rub on the crystal sands of the beach in front of a picturesque sunset as the cook prepares your dinner and the waiter serves your rum cola.
peace.
