Anything under the sun that you have noticed lately. ------------------------------ I dont often watch TV,last night i was able to watch the news and i noticed this, 50% (or maybe more )of commercials being shown on TV is about long, black, shiny hair. people are lead to believe that having the longest, blackest and shiniest hair is a big factor for beauty. i dont get it.all the commercials about shampoo is just so.......... Around 25% of the commercials are for soaps that will make skin "whiter" and smoother. pretty much implying that having whiter, fairer skin is also a major factor of being beautiful. The rest goes to milks, dishwashing soaps.sanitary napkins ,and brusko's fave...feminine wash ;D etc. hmmm....come to think of it,almost all commercials nowadays are for women. as usual, nothing entertaining on local TV What have u guys noticed lately?

actually, what you see on TV are more or less just a reflection of what people want rather than the advertising companies forcing it down to people. A lot of those concepts (long, black hair, white skin, etc) are products of extensive discussions with consumers, and it seems that the consumers want long hair this year.
as for targetting women, well, women would tend to spend more on themselves than guys do, especially on beauty care products, so it isn't surprising that these are the prime targets of companies.
as for commercials per se, it's a necesarry evil. TV shows need to make money after all, and it's the commercials that pay for it, and of course it's ultimately the consumers that pay for those commercials. so one way or another (either by buying the product adverstised or paying directly for cable), it's not really free TV.
unless of course you have TIVO. a hi-tech VCR like machine that records the shows you want and cuts out the commercial. it even knows the kinds of shows you watch to the point of recommending what shows may appeal to you (so if it starts recommending gay shows, well . . . )

it's usually conducted through various means, the most hands-on is FGDs (Focus Group Discussions), wherein the survery firm rounds up people with the same demographics and our own people do the discussions. of course minsan sumasablay coz you only have so much resource to actually sample a significant part of the population.
and if you think about it, FGDs is the best way to meet other singles . . . .same demographics, non-threatening open discussions, a facilitator . . . you even get paid!

Tofi, you we're watching the news?
I think they target the schedule of their ads when there is significant number of target consumers. 'Di kya men are not as prone as women in believing TV ads that's why they target men in different media/ways?
Now I've got a question... How do these people ( those who survey) know how many people watch this particular show, and the demographics? I watched a TV program way long ago that there are special TVs which monitors what these families watch. Only the company and the family know that there's this gadget inside the TV.
Here in Pinas how do they do that?

I believe there is. If you noticed on some of the ads of ABS-CBN (or was it GMA) basta they came out with an ad saying these so and so programs were the most watched vs competition based on these ratings etc.
I'm not sure on the exact methodology, it could be some thingamajig bolted to your TV which monitors which channel is being watched at what time or there's an actual person sitting in during these prime-times to observe the family.
Due to the magic of statistics, you don't really need to monitor that many people to get an accurate read of the entire population's behavior.
Big Brother is watching . . . . hehehehe

I think... well, based on what I heard... the different networks can only monitor those who are using aerial antenna (vhf/uhf). Those who watches directly from the network's feed.
So (I think) they base their ratings on those using aerial. Since if you are a cable subscriber, you get the feed from the cable's feed. Somewhat like a computer connected to a network hub. But you could monitor how much computers is connected to your LAN right? hehehe

why are you asking about girls in the shampoo commercials having long hair!!!!
for one thing it makes the commercial real cool!!!! but the main reason for using telents with long hair in shampoo commecials is that your're going to use more shampoo on your hair even though you have a short hair!!!! so the more you use up the shampoo bottle.. the more you but shampoo and the more profit the companies have!!!!!!!

Nothing against the girls in the commercials, really beautiful girls as always. its just that they(companies that make shampoos) are so O.A. na when it comes to projecting the beauty of having a long, black, shiny, celophaned, straightened, relaxed, hot oiled hair!!!! 'nuff about that, am now sick as well of talking 'bout it. anything else you guys have noticed lately aside from commercials on TV?

c'mon guys, women are the best material for commercial...they attract both men and women...women give no qualms about showing admiration to a fellow woman..sometimes i wonder how they still able to shriek when they see the now so huge sharon cuneta hehe! men rarely do that and men use palmolive, sunsilk etc on their hair... bagay minsan nagtataka rin ako. ;D
back to topic:
hmm..we maybe living in a modern age but read the bible and history books and you will notice that the society as a whole didnt change that much since the history of man began...the lust for power, material things, greed and fears etc.
that's what i noticed...we are essentially the same people.

Big Brother is watching . . . . hehehehe i used to repair tv sets for fun and profit (from the old analog types up to newer sets) and i haven't found anything of this sort (surveillance device). i'll try to found out next time i've wondered about this too. i've never been, never known anyone, never known anyone who knew someone, who's had this supposedly mysterious device attached to their TVs to monitor what they're watching. so where are the networks getting their monthly rating information??? the main reason for using telents with long hair in shampoo commecials is that your're going to use more shampoo on your hair even though you have a short hair!!!! so the more you use up the shampoo bottle.. the more you but shampoo and the more profit the companies have!!!!!!! i think this makes sense.... anyway, TOFI, someone very reliable ( ;D ) told me that there are more women watching TV than men. this is why years ago GMA 7 switched their strategy to more women-oriented programs (and which is probably why they now have QTV). out with Dong Puno and welcome Mareng Winnie. this is partly how they've beaten ABS-CBN. anyway, hence those commercials... ;D

Most likely there is a device or an auditor or whatever that monitors it given ABS-CBN came out with those rating numbers a couple of months back. If I rememebr right, the add went, Do you know who ACNielsen is?
ACNielsen is one of the leading market data provider in the world. So if they came out with those numbers they must be doing some sort of audit. Most likely this is based on a sample of the population only, perhaps they have an auditor on-ground, perhaps it's via survey, etc. Given the behavior of the masa is more or less similar, then they would only need a very small sample of the population perhaps to get their data.

ok, how about this. i noticed that teens nowadays are more open to their sexuality. i see lesbianism to be very openly accepted nowadays. i always see really young girls, holding hands, kissing, hugging in public (malls esp.) not minding and doesn't even care what other people will say or think. lots of gays as well.and they're not afraid to show how gay they are!
