this is one hell of a band. i love it. they're actually my favorite. i almost have all their albums though just a copy from the original. my friend has the original which was bought for him in the states.
"6:00" is my favorite track... d@mn! that track rocks! i love the odd time signature in it. imagine how they do it. imagine how they remember all those during live performances! my second fave is "pull me under". nah, it'd take a long one to name all the songs i love. though i love all of their songs, there are tracks that i wanna listen a lot.
the last studio album, systematic chaos, is a comeback to their original style. octavarium is quite a @#$%. it was like a U2 type kasi. didn't love much of it, just a few.

James LaBrie...he's an opera singer or he studied it... Why do the vovalist is the least to be loved when it comes to prog. rock... I dont like rush's front man ;D ;D ;D it's because in progressive music, there is more technicality in the instrument played, guitars, drums, keyboards, bass, etc. than on the vocals. try listening to LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT. it's the same as dream theater without labrie. it d@mn rocks. they were able to bring out everything. actually, i like it more than dream theater but dream theater won't be dream theater without the vocalist....

same with you, sir... i sing but just once in a blue moon. so like the text under your avatar, "you are not alone," sir. hehehe! i can sing songs but not the ones that involve voice quality. i like guitar players too but not all. most of the time, i judge the quality of the music before even starting to like them. queensryche is progressive too but i just couln't like their music. it's like something lacks in their music. well, they are known for that. i'll leave that to them.

dream theater is a really great band !!! I also happen to have a collection of their albums but in mp3 format... I also have the Liquid tension 1 and 2, and even the suspended animation of john petrucci, although he sounded more like joe satriani in it...hehehe... with regards to ritchie kotzen, hell yeah!!! he is good!!! he may be different from paul gilbert but he was able to blend in the group Mr.Big and even doing the same thing as how PG does it... look up on you tube on how kotzen does the green tinted intro without the tapping, he surely made me drool... hehehe

hmm. i think they're branded as progressive metal as they're really not up there with the genuine prog rock bands like Yes and Rush and Genesis and King Crimson (?)
As for my experience, the first time I heard them I was really impressed. I got the Train of Thought album. But really, when you get to listen to more prog rock bands, Dream Theater just becomes, hm, bland. just my experience there
Dream Theater songs lack identity. Their songs sound like they're just jamming along, not creating a theme for a song. They're talented and they're really good technical musicians. Its just that this isn't "progressive" as the pioneers of progressive made it to be.
If you want progressive I'd really recommend Rush. They got the perfect balance between progressive and "radio friendliness" so it's easy to listen to. Alan Parsons Project is nice too.

Its just that this isn't "progressive" as the pioneers of progressive made it to be. well thats what supposed to happen when your doing music... everything must be tight and fluid...that's why you may hear them that they are just jamming along... playing non-stop for 20minutes or so is a thing that a few muscians would ever do...mostly with all the dynamics applied, super multi multi sweeps and shreds. I don't believe that they lack in identity because if you could dig deeply into their music even more you'll see...

Paul Gilbert is more of a happy verday guy type I guess that's why Mr Big plus Billy's most of the time serious mood... but I give these guys the highest respect that I could give...they are one of my favorite bands... aside from the technicalities in their song writing...the vocalisation that they also do reminds me of the Great QUEEN...
