A refreshing break from your usual freeride movies that seem to be the norm with mountain biking films nowadays. This movie captures that spirit that moves riders to race and compete, the sacrifices they make, the passion they have for the sport. True to the trailer, the movie takes you to an emotional rollercoaster on what it takes to achieve a dream -- how hard would you train? how far would you go? how much pain would you endure?
This movie is more of a drama/reality-show type rather than showcasing specific techniques. You are not wowed by the rider form or technical handling skills, rather viewers are moved by the spirit that moves these riders to compete, almost every week, to various races across europe, through any type of conditions. You rejoice with the riders when they cross the finishline, and you empathize with them when they realize how their Olympic dream slowly fades away.
The cinematography is amazing, where non-bikers can still watch in awe as amazing vistas of Ecuador, Scotland, Spain, Austria are shown. The soundtrack adds the right emotions pre-race, race, and beyond.
If you're looking for spectacular stunts, look somewhere else (like the upcoming ROAM video). You will be bored here. This is a movie that you do not jump from scene to scene, it is instead something you have to follow from the very start, just like your usual movie.
Off Road to Athens is a journey, literally and emotionally. Just as watching The Collective inspires you to do hairy stunts, this is the kind of movie that will inspire you to race . . .

Thanks for the great review. I'm the director of the film. 2 quick things - since this was our first feature length film we had zero funding for it and used credit cards to fund the project. We are literally still paying them off. I'm writing this because an avid cyclist who posts on this board notified us of people discussing making illegal copies of the movie. So please - if you are interested in owning a copy - besides breaking International Copyright Laws, it's not helping Ken and I to make another film if people are out there duping our DVD illegally. We can send them anywhere around the world - just order at the website - www.offroadtoathens.comBut seriously - if you want another mt. bike film from us, we really NEED your support. Thanks and if you are interested in our next project - get on our newsletter list - on the website. -Jason Berry

Aside from the excellent cinematography, I really appreciated how they used music to highlight the pace/vibe/feel of the race. My favorite race was the one held in Ecuador. They had to delay the start of the men's race cause a dog strayed at the starting gate. Good thing the policia didn't shoot it.

haha yeah I rememeber that scene. they were like all stressed to start the race, and then this dog runs infront and everyone was chasing the dog out of the track . . .
me I like the Scotland race, where the music was very Lord of the Rings type. The Austrian race was fun too where almost half of the time everyone was just running! hehehe
Agree completely to Jerry's point above. Films like this aren't made by big film companies and are usually done by small groups who just have a passion for the sport. I think well-made films like this really deserved to be paid. I takes only about a month for the DVD to be sent anyway.
Ey, how about coming over and checking out the Philippine scene?

I had to remove the "send us your story and maybe we'll send you a free DVD" as too many lame stories came pouring in. I just want people to understand we're not getting rich - we're barely gonna pay for the cost and will never see money for our time to shoot & edit. Haik is the guy who did the soundtrack - he's a musical genious.
What is the race scene like in the Philippines?
Oh yea - it won't take a month if you order the DVD - maybe a week or two at the most!

So, with all your due respect, Mr. Jason. Right? Care to tell us your story. How did you find out our biking community here in the Phils? About the race scene here in our country... My friends here could share their stories especially those who've gone far into their racing careers...
Welcome to our forum, if I may say so. EnJoy your stay.

My story? Or the story about the film? Or how did I hear about this forum? Thanks for the welcome - no due respect needed but thanks. JB

HEY - I got an idea - if there's enough people who live near each other we can send you guys a bunch of DVD's at wholesale. Just pool together and put an order in - that way it will get there faster and everyone pays about half price (if you order 5 or more). Not bad eh?

I'd like to volunteer. Ken just added HK on the list of countries where they can deliver the DVD. I'll send it there in Manila thru our regular shipment and you can get it at DETOUR/EPICENTER. I'm ordering 2 at least and I'm thinking of getting the sountrack as well. Bee
