NTT DoCoMo unveils superfast '3 1/2 Generation' mobile phoneTOKYO -- Japan's largest mobile phone company on Thursday unveiled eight new models in its FOMA series, including the country's first handset to utilize the High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) protocol. According to NTT DoCoMo, the HSDPA-handset can download data at speeds up to 3.6 Megabytes per second, or 10 times faster than the company's current FOMA models. All of the new models have an inbuilt audio player, and some utilize DoCoMo's "Chaku-Uta Full" service that allows downloading of large audio files such as news and entertainment content provided by the Mainichi Newspapers, and J-pop hits. Using mobile phones to listen to music downloads the same way people use portable music players such as Apple Computer Inc.'s iPod is rapidly growing in popularity in Japan, where virtually every adult owns a mobile phone. Competition is growing among mobile companies to offer such services. NTT DoCoMo is playing catch up with rival KDDI Corp., which has drawn users through its music download feature. U.S. software company Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Media Audio technology will enable NTT DoCoMo mobile phones to play music downloaded to personal computers from more than 100 online musicservices, they said in a statement. NTT DoCoMo will begin the music service with one of their higher end models to go on sale this summer, it said. (Mainichi Daily News and AP reports)

Question Butch, if u buy a 3G fone from Japan (i know u bought one before), will u be able to use the video calling function if u use it here using the local network? is there like compatibility issues when it comes to the 3G function from different fone brands/countries?
TIA

I haven't tried it yet brad, since 3G was newly introduced when I was there, I guess there would be some problems since with the 3G Sharp unit we werent able to activate the WAP/GPRS settings...so no picture forwarding. Vodafone units have locked settings I guess that needs to be tweaked. I'll try asking if any of my friends were able to use this feature. Thanks Butch, am interested because we have a couple of 3G vodafones at home. a Sharp and a Toshiba. according to my friend who's into mobile fones, the units can be open lined (about 1.5k each) for local use but not sure if all the 3G functions will work. Nah, they didnt mention if its post or prepaid. 1~1.5K is cheap brad, we used have ours flashed (I mean the fone ) for 2.5K before (903SH). I love the 904T.... but will wait out I guess till I'm going home, the mobile phone models here changing faster than the season here. cool, thanks Butch, wifey went to the mall yesterday and saw that the Vodafone units are being open lined for 1K - 1.5K depending on the brand and model. forgot to check the models of the fones we have. might get the fones open lined and find out.
