After almost three years of development, the much-anticipated Sony Playstation 3 is set to hit the Japanese, North American and European markets simultaneously in November 2006.
Sony’s announcement last March 15 came as a surprise as many have hoped that the PS3 would arrive in early 2006, partly to compete with the availability of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 that was launched in late 2005.
Third rival Nintendo has not made official announcements to the launch of its Revolution console but speculations point to a mid-year launch date.
According to Sony’s announcement, the PS3 will incorporate the proprietary Blu-Ray Disc, which has a maximum capacity of 50 Gigabytes of space or five times that of today’s digital versatile discs (DVD) games.
The company is also set to produce one million PS3s per month though it did not specify the number of units that would be sold on launch date.
There would also be at least 30 game titles available on the PS3’s launch date, including sequels to highly successful games such as Metal Gear Solid 4, Fight Night Round 3, Final Fantasy PS3, Devil May Cry 4 and Tekken PS3.
The PS3 is touted to be the second most powerful among the three next-generation consoles -- and also the most expensive. It would have a 3.2 Gigahertz Cell processor, 256MB XDR memory, 256MB GDDR video memory, six USB ports, three Ethernet ports and Bluetooth connectivity.
There is no official price set for the PS3 yet but it is expected to hit between 400 and 500 US dollars.
