hi PinoyMTBiker, i'm planing to build an SS to use as my commuter bike here in los banos. i really don't want to spend too much on it so i'll limit my budget from 8-10k. no more, no less. i know it's possible but i don't know where and how to start. so, where would i use my SS? - daily bike commute to from office - occasional trail rides - maybe occasional trip up to mudspring (is it possible?) a few questions on my mind - what components do i need? - what brands/models are cheap but reliable? - can any frame be good for SS? - is my budget right for what i need? any suggestion would be appreciated. thanks guys.

will you be buying all new parts? Because i built mine due to the fact that too many old used parts seem to be lying around.

I built mine for a fraction of that budget considering I have front suspension. That is because I have a few spare usable parts lying around. A few things you'll need. A frame, of course - steel or aluminum? Fork - Rigid or suspension (XCR is worth the money)? Wheel set - High or low end, disc or V breaks(much cheaper)? SS conversion kit - I waited for a used one so I saved about 300Php. Cranks - Waited for another used part and saved 250Php. Used avid break levers and saved 150Php. There are more... if you're ready to spend 8-10K I guess that would be enough to get new parts which may not be high end but would be a great entry level SS. My advise... look at the B&S section and save a few hundred. There are good parts out there, waiting for a second lease on life.

sir, 2nd hand parts are ok. new parts if it can fit the budget. i guess i need a suspension fork if i'm going to do trails/mt. makiling. steel frame is not a problem. would it look good, steel frame with front suspension? hmm... hmmm... this is what i currently have: - old saddle - old v-brakes that's all i have

Invest on moving parts such as hubs, bb, chain and headset since this bike would see more action. A lesson learned when I used my old hub which broke down twice within the week but after replacing it with a shimano parallux for 400Php from kmsixteen everything turned out sweet. I got and inexpensive but reliable stem, handle bar, grips and seat post which basically makes me happy with my build. Clocked 60kms within the first week already. ;D From one SS newbie to another... GOOD LUCK with the build and happy parts hunting.

Please dont hurry yourself, take your time looking it up in the buy and sell section, find time to ask fellow homegrown riders if they know someone selling used but good parts. For a good frame an alloy one would cost at about 2k+ and up (but i recommend cromo-steel or steel). Just always keep in mind to keep it simple, it is you who should decide for your own set-up. For me a single-speed set-up reflects ones personality. Lastly if its going to be a cromo -steel make sure the head tube most be oversized to accomodate a suspension fork.
I really like being updated when someone builds a new project bike , please do update us time to time. Thank you.

If you're in a hurry, try visiting surplus bike shops. Cobym found a steal (steel too) from a shop in Manila. I think there was a discussion in the bike gallery. I'm not sure if they talked about it in the vintage bike topic. Also try talking to jacklero, who also has some information about the surplus bike shops. The bikes you'll find in those shops are geared. You could just convert them to SS. Happy hunting!

you will need to know your gearing combo, will it be a 32, 34 0r 36 for cranks. A mtb cog or bmx cog? A 16, 17, 18, 19 or 20 its your personal preference. A good chain, again mtb or bmx? Any frame will do, just find your size. Man your budget is more than enough in my opinion.

bobby, sir what's the difference between mtb or bmx cog? what gear combo can you suggest for starters? Makoy, of course i remember you sir. bike all the way from pasig on SS, leading the pack up to giant. that'll be great sir, i'm very interested! ;D - frames, in case i can't find used/old frames, what brand new frame choices can i have for the 3k price range? is vision pursuit good for SS? - components, are fire eyes cheap? - cranks, what crank choices do i have?

- frames, in case i can't find used/old frames, what brand new frame choices can i have for the 3k price range? is vision pursuit good for SS? you can get those "generic" taiwans for 2.5k, and if you spend a bit more you can get a vision pursuit, bang for the buck frame, i believe. i used to have 2 ss on visions, i just find their 19s a bit smaller than other brands - components, are fire eyes cheap? fire eyes are bit dearer than dabomb, their tensioners are 300, but they come in silver black and orange, im using orange colored tensioner with my ss - cranks, what crank choices do i have? deore cranks would be a good entry lever option, since it dont think you can take out the chain rings of the non-series --------------------- fork? brakes? im asking since these two inputs a significant amount on the bikes weight, generic alloy fork should set you back 900-950 pesos and suntour xcr lo 2k plus. brakes, v brakes usually are lighter than discs just take your time, you can even build it below the 5k mark with 10k? very doable happy easter

the MTB cogs are designed for shifting (they have ridges to make shifting smooth), while the BMX cogs have higher teeth and thicker and are a bit friendly to the freehub. Me i use a disaSSembled MTB cog coz thats what i have for the moment.
AS what 32x18 said, 32x18 is a good starting combo w/c most people here use, very good for hilly trails, but spins a lot on flats. I use a 36x18 mostly on roads on my messenger bike. I still find myself spinning on flats, my wifes bike , when its in SS mode i place a 32x18 combo, bottomline, it is still your personal preference go play around with different combinations and take into consideration what kind of rides you will do.
But as you said in your opening thread you will use it as a commuter, suggestion only huh, use a heavier combination, if used in the trails i guess you have the assume the mandatory standing position on steep climbs. Ask the fathers of SS of PinoyMTBiker King, small, Westcoastbo, 32x18 and others who i forgot they are the authority on SSpeeding. My SS is designed for courier work around the metro manila area so i'm not much knowledgeable at trail combo.
A vision Pursuit is a bang for the buck also made by the people of the Bomb and is "Modelo" at least you wont be left behind with other great looking frames, right small? Deore crank very well mid level component, and good starting point, but if you have "sukli" (change to spare) buy a higher level a Saint would look good on a vision i suppose. Do mind me im just fantasizing.
As small said, Happy EaSSter to all PinoyMTBiker'ers.

Take your time brad... It took me five months to assemble an SS intended for my son (and me too ;D). I used an XCR fork and deore crank. Bought an old GT chucker for 1.8k, have it repainted. Frequent visit to LBS and B&S section made it complete. Btw, its a 32x18 with juju hubs, and old bb5 brake. Good luck brad! The suggestions above are very helpful...

i think your 223's are disc specific, you cannot use your existing V's with those.
