ARAY!!! Almost crashed too! While cranking up a hill, off the saddle, the master link on my PC1 decided to give it up... Luckily, I was close to home.... Everyone, please check your master link to see if it's still secure...

i had this kind of accident too... me and my wife was doing uphill that time. i was wearing trekking sandals only. i was about to stand to tackle the uphill when the chain snapped and whipped my toes... i went home with lots of blood on the right toe. i just got a small wound though, but deep and bloody...

that happened to me too. Full torque going up a climb, almost at a stand still, grunting and then <plink>! Luckily it was my knee that hit the handlebar. Gary, hope you're alright. Better make sure the 'plumbing' still works

Ouch! So how did Stem like the introduction? I hope you won't be singing soprano for a long time, Gar.
Thanks for the heads up. Now I gotta go check PC-1 for anything suspicious....
How long have you had that chain, Gar? How much mileage have you put on it?

The plumbing still works fortunately... that's the first thing we checked...hehe.... The PC1 is about a year old and most of the usage was from last Feb when I visited last (I don't ride this SS all that much)... This is actually the 2nd PC1 that we've had snap on us. The first was SJ snapping the PC1 on my Dean. It maybe the last time I buy the SRAM singlespeed master links...

Ok, now i'm getting a bit paranoid. The KMC I has a circlip to secure the 'master link'. Will keep an eye on it now!
Dang, Gary, you and SJ are chainbreakers! Must be all the taters in Idaho!

Any other accounts of PC-1s snapping at the masterlink on mtbr.com? Might just go back to a trusty HG-51. Problem is, now I see King has snapped one in La Mesa..... What to do?

I'll probably run an 8 spd chain in the future with a non-SRAM master link.... I have a bunch of 9 spd master links made by KMC I believe that have treated me well...

you can get a bmx chain. my chain was a real old one though, going back to when the tassajara was geared (8spd) and it's been opened a few times. so an HG-51 still a pretty good bet. Bang for buck, the IG's are your best bet
Just make sure you bring a good chain tool and spare links

Is the master link similar to the KMC missing link? I bought a missing link, but haven't installed it yet. It's either I'm lucky or just plain weak because I haven't broken my chain (yet; knock on wood).
Gary, glad you're okay. I guess cycling is a contact sport after all. ;D

The missing link is harder to get on and off than the SRAM powerlink, and KMC recommends that you replace the missing link after removing it. Duh, beats the purpose of a tool free serviceable chain link.
Are the 9 and 8 speed powerlinks stronger than the PC-1 (due to the shorter pin length)?

I guess one can forego the KMC Missing Link and just use a regular link and a chainbreaker no?

Duh, beats the purpose of a tool free serviceable chain link. Are the 9 and 8 speed powerlinks stronger than the PC-1 (due to the shorter pin length)? The PC1 masterlink requires twisting the chain to pop off the plate. As you can see by what happened to my masterlink, I think twisting the masterlink eventually weakens it and makes it more susceptible to popping off. In my example, I think it twisted enough so the pin just sheared right off (either that or my heavy ass going up the hill made it snap). The 8 spd and 9 spd master links are sliders (each plate has a pin) which require no twisting to take on or off. I'm starting to think that it's a vastly superior design (and my left nut agrees with my right on it)...

I guess one can forego the KMC Missing Link and just use a regular link and a chainbreaker no? The KMC Masterlink actually looks like a better design than the PC1 system. That extra lock makes a ton of sense. It would'e prevented what happened to me since the plate would'e stayed on... I think... I'm actually beginning to think of replacing all my PC1 master links with something else... Time for more research!

Evidently, the 8 speed Powerlinks are incompatible with Shimano 8 speed chains. I found this out first hand when I first started out with 8sp on my NRS.

It's an old Sachs/Sedis 8 spd chain... SRAM powerlink works just fine with them (and they shift better than the old Shimano 8 spd chains)....

I'm the newest member of the broken chain gang. Snapped my chain while doing a climb in coffee trail today. Luckily the crown jewels were spared when my right thigh hit the stem first. After a couple of kilometers, my front tire got caught in a deep rut and I crashed again. Both of my thighs look like they've been through hazing. ;d
