Care to elaborate how the octalink sucked sir? it easily gets "kalog" the moment i tried it via reverse rocky road where there were a lot of rolling hills. so i immediately transferred the crank to my NRS thinking that the problem might go away. unfortunately i might have to replace my bb sooner or later. in short, in such a short time, an octalink isnt durable (for me) on a SS rig. so im running an experiment this time on an outboard bearing crank. hope its ok this time. thing with square tapers is that they are heavy (both the bb and the crank) that's why i've totally dumped the system from my lineup.

Square taper for me. Raceface taperlock is light. You can get one with Ti spindle if you want something lighter. I'm running ENO cranks with it on my fixed gear. On the SS, it's good ol UN72 with Middleburn RS7 cranks. UN72 is a tank. But if I had a money tree, I'd take a Phil Wood Ti BB and a Paul Comp 100% Mountain crank.

I've had problems with an ISIS drivetrain on my then-geared bike, what more with the torque you generate riding a singlespeed, so I switched to a square taper.
Right now I've got an old Deore Hollowtech (square taper) that I bought 2nd hand. But I've replaced the rings already.
As for BB's, it's square tapers for me. Easier to adjust, to get the optimum chainline. Shimano UN's are bombproof, and very affordable.

Jeibi, has a pair after he upgraded to a stylo. yun lang. P.A.

i've used square tapers, external bb's, octalink, isis on my SS bikes and if installed correctly (and the bb used is good quality), they all work equally as well.... the only thing I changed would be to replace the chainring bolts with steel and to replace the middle chainring with non-ramped/pinned rings.

i have a concern with bmx 3 pc cranks, turbo. i don't think it will be compatible with surly's that use fff (fatties fit fine) because the chainstays are really wide to accept tires upto 2.7 (not sure). mtb cranks have a bend compared to bmx cranks that are straight. hth

Been using an octalink BB and OLD XTR 952 arms for more than a year of hard SS riding. Mud, rain, sand, sun, dirt, rocks, road, etc. Not a peep from the BB or the arms. No funny noises or creaks or lateral movement within the BB.
I even have a spare M950 BB waiting just in case the 952 BB fails or shakes loose or develops some play but none so far. I'd do this setup over again exactly the same way if I built another SS. I'm really happy with it.
Good luck..

hmmmm.... if all 29'ers ride as nice as your voodoo........ it's definitely something for me to consider....... At this point, I'm not convinced with my road bike. I might just sell it and go back to pure MTB riding.... If that does happen, I might just venture into life with "Big Wheels" I like what PA's done with your ex-monkey by the way..... jm... turbo, i think it will work with non-surly frames. i read somewhere kasi that the max chain ring for the 1x1 is 34T, not sure about other models though. i read that your post on the general mtb thread, canvassing for parts. in you list, you wanted a vision pursuit frame. i think bmx cranks will fit that frame. i saw a photo of a white vision frame here (somewhere) and the owner used a GT 3-pc crankset. as far as i can remember, the owner is from cebu. hope this helps..
