i do a lot of off road riding. i have a couple of bikes but i'm a bit skeptic about using my SS especially if a trail is unfamilliar to me.
i've talked to a true, blue SS rider (matt) about using a SS rig. we rode to DRT, bulacan. when i asked him about using an SS, he says that everywhere he goes, he just brings along his SS. i was amazed and mistified at the same time. i mean, what if the ride is mostly uphill? or paved, straight roads? pedalling will be varied mostlikely. so i ask, when do use a geared bike if you're a true, blue, SS rider?

If you're a true blue SS rider, then you'll never feel the need for a geared bike. Mat can pedal all the way up The Wall without stopping. Now that's a true blue SS rider.
With the single speed's simplicity, there are limitations to these bikes. That, you and all the SS riders here will have to admit. ;D
One would be speed. ;D

I use a SS (36:20) for all my local trails with only one exception, there's one trail with a 4 mile climb that's very steep. SS is not very fun so I bring the geared bike. We might ride that particular trail once every two years. Our trails are mostly up or down, not too many long flat sections so I never get left behind. If I'm riding roads that are mostly flat, then I use the SS roadbike (53:15). The gearing is very tall so speed is not an issue, but stopping/starting a lot is not very fun. If your ride consists of trail and roads, then you will be spinning too much on the flats using 2:1 ratio. Spinning on the flats is not a problem unless you're trying to keep up with fast riders using gears. a solution is to use a deraileurless 2 speed (36:20 and 42:13 almost have the same chain length). Bring the right gear for the ride
