There are many reasons to ride 1FG (I thought I'd ripoff C-dales term). When other riders on the trail ask why, what do you tell them? 1. I've ridden these same trails many times, using a SS gives me a new experience and forces me to change my riding technique. 2. I like the leg burn when climbing. 3. When I get a raise, I'll be able to afford gears. 4. What's a derailleur? 5. 6.

well I used to say: "my other bike has gears AND full suspension", that is till I found myself riding it less and less, then not at all. so the frame is now for sale (sniff) strangely enough, I feel a bit "conscious"/modest when the fact that I am riding an SS is pointed out (usually when the group stops)...I just smile and ask them to try the bike, since it really isn't as hard as it looks (well, after a few weeks at least! hehe)...am just a guy on a bike, and at the end of the day, we are ALL guys/gals on bikes I dig the simplicity of the ride, how responsive the bike is, how connected you are to the trail, and how raw the experience becomes. to add to the funny replies to the question: 10) i got tired of chain suck/chain slap 11) aha! let's swap bikes! 12) coz SHE left me 13) i'm waiting for the return of BioPace...

14)rider-on-the-right-hand-side: "wtf! you're riding SS?! me: shut up an' ride the trail! joke lang! 15) i'm a schizophrenic and i'm compensating... bo: you rippin' off 'dale stuff, 20 push ups for you plus you bring the frame when you get here "all you need is one"

well said 32x18, my exact sentiments. Keep spreadin the SS faith.
I tell riders trying out SS for the first time to use an easy gear at first and gradual climbs only, and soon they will be riding all the old trails without the crutch of a granny gear.
Most people don't believe me when I tell them it's not much harder than gears most of the time, that is until the trail gets really steep.
Owen - pushups done. I just like the 1FG name... or does the F stand for "fun", I don't know.

coz its more difficult to think "what gear should i be in to climb that thing" and pedal than just pedal.

because a SS is less prone to "bikejack" here in Pinas....coz' less bling.
makes you think of the ride more than the bike....
....more so when you ride a fixed sprocket gear...

because it's low on maintenance, gone are the days of fine tuning the drivetrain it is lighter i have an excuse not to have the more expensive components such as the FD, RD, cable housings, shifters, cogsets, and cranks. no RD to worry about that could break during a worst case scenario crash.
it catches the eye of other MTB cyclists ( their comment would always be, isn't it difficult or hard?) well i just say, it takes getting used to. or i'm still waiting for the hydraulic shifters.
its a purist thingy, clean, simple, and efficient. and for one Iam still figuring it out after for so many years, if one iSS all we really need.
and so we SS riders have always something to post on this thread.
Peace Out.
and also, i have been comparing gear combinations against geared and SS in terms of efficiency, its seems that they feel different even if they are the same gear combo, eg. a 34x17 SS is not as responsive as a geared 34x17, well maybe its just me.
Peace Out again.
come to think of it, it has been almost 2 years of hibernation for this thread.
trying to think about more.
