nice answer pete. very precise. but i need more substance than form.
it occurs to me that whenever we ride, as long as there's somebody else other than yourself, the moment you communicate and share thoughts, i think that's already social. so i guess some rides arent social? hehehe. ;D

(History) of the Social Climbers It all started when a group of PinoyMTBiker newbies banded together and started organizing rides that will take them to places they want to be considering their endurance, stamina and skill levels and yet enjoy the beauty of the mountains. With that in mind, the SC were able to climb sierra madre, join bugarin ride, climb mount samat, did caliraya ride and integrated to rides organized by PinoyMTBiker veterans (as our own sub-group) to helipad, abuyod-pinugay, etc.. In so doing, we would find out later that we can do all these trailriding and climbs at our own pasyal pace and still do some sosyalan, thus the Social Climbers (SC) were born (i remember it was andy/handle:roadieprojek who coined the word Social Climber during our Mt. Samat climb when he noticed that even while doing the ascents, the boys can still maintain their tsismisan). Radical/Bobet would sometimes tease us on this habit of tsismisan . Eventually the SC were to organize regular weekly halfday training rides (SCUD Rides) by PM and text. And everything else was history I remembered nhan telling me somebody told him that the reason he joined the last (san ysiro-sta ines) hellride was to spy the route for the SC group . 100% korek po yan ahihihi As every Social Climber would say, "I am a social climber and i'm proud of it".

After joining the last hellride (san ysiro-sta ines) Nhan wouldn't let this kind of trail be left as "unvisited" by the SC, we would discuss the trail and eventually plot a "tamer" version of the ride where we were to enter and exit the trail using sitio batangas, bgy. san andres (along the highway before the sierra madre hotel) as the trailhead/end. And so nhan agreed to bring the SC to sta inez and trailmaster the ride.
It was also a good chance for the SC because we were welcoming ron who had just recovered from his accident and chitsniper who was out of saddle for 3 months because of work concerns, as early as the last week of feb. words were already sent to SC about the sta inez ride. It was agreed that we were to take the maarat-giant-cabading-boso2-mang vic route as well as enter/exit the sitio batangas trailhead.
The group met at tina's eatery @0630 amidst all the air of festivities for the KOM to be held that sunday. @0700 it was time to saddle-up and after a couple of "you know what" scaling the wall, the group (me, nhan, ron, chitsniper, greywall/duds, rustynail/dave and kaneda/rey) re-grouped at ka tobias a little before 0800. when we decided to hit giant, we were stopped at timberland gate because the first wave of female riders were about to come in. thus we were able to catch a glimpse of our very own wreachelle and kate coming in after that strong lady rider.
thus the ride was already delayed by almost an hour from schedule. we arrived at giant a little past 0900, made a quick re-loading and re-hydration and went down to mang vic's via cabading and arrived mang vic's @past 1000. there to meet us were rorschach/drew and cobra/mike.

We arrived at the sitio batangas trailhead a little before 1100 and the trailride fun began: We were welcomed to a fireroad entering that sleepy tanay barangay where everything seems to move at an easy pace, past another 2 more barangays and finally the welcome arc that will lead us to a valley where there would seem to be an endless river crossings alternated by fireroads guarded by the beauty of the sierra madre mountain range looming before us. after an hour or so, we reached civilization and entered what seem to be a bgy. center, we pedalled on again thru alternating bgy. fireroads, single tracks on hills and still endless river crossings and finally we reached the bgy. sta inez proper @1330. @the store in sta inez, nhan ordered foods to be cooked and we carbo-loaded on some snack foods, biscuits and "hot" sprite and royal (c'mon guys electric power supply hasn't reached this bgy. yet). and "cold" scramble where the vendor's scramble would practically be emptied during the reststop, nhan and the group plotted that while waiting for the food to be cooked, we were to go to kinabuan falls first. the ride up to the kinabuan waterfalls that can be reached via a bike and hike-a-bike (which we would find out later was more). estimated return trip 2 hrs., so the SC made a consensus of hitting kinabuan, return to the store @1600, make a quick "very late" lunch and pedal back to sitio batangas. the rocky unbikeable trailhead entrance going-up to the mountain that will lead us to kinabuan falls would be a prelude of the trail that we were about to take. meter wide uphill trail littered by rock outcroppings snaking thru the mountainside along the ravine where you can hear and see the daraitan river (?) tributuaries down, some more river crossings and it would be that way for almost half of the trail ride and we would practically carry our bike along the trail. the heat of the scorching sun and exhaustion of hike-a-bike would finally take its toll that the pace of the group would finally slow down (nawala na ang sosyalan ), almost everybody was out of water, hunger was beginning to set in, time check 1500, we continue or head back to sta ines store, NO, we continue we were already halfway finally, @1530 we reached a dumagat community and had some conversation with a lady NGO/environmentalist, we were pointed to a "bukal" where we can refill our water containers, so refill we did and finally had our self rehydrated "well". after some more climbs we were able to reach our "prize"..... the kinabuan waterfalls @around 1600. the dip on the waters of kinabuan was more than a bottle of gatorade and powergel combined as it was really a most refreshing feeling after half a day of trailriding and hiking. time check 1610, it was time to prepare, and saddle-up was at 0615, time to head back to the sta inez store, we did a quick stop at that dumagat community where the lady ngo offered a prayer for us before we pedalled back, the ride back seems to be fast (i think). we arrived @the sta inez store a little past 1700 and we had a "sumptuous" lunch of steamed rice, itlog na pula, corned beef and mackerel and still some more "hot" royal and sprite and for dessert, we had freshly harvested kaimitos. with all the legs and lung powers drained from a day of riding that started @0530, the boys finally decided on giving itself the much needed break, we departed bgy sta ines proper @1800 when darkness was slowly starting to set in and reached masinag @2030, that was a fast ride! you can make your own calculations on how we did it thanks nhan for that trailmastering and leadership skills you showed all the time during the ride, thanks SC for that wonderful sunday and of course to the locals and the dinagats who were all gracious hosts to nine weekend warriors. sta ines is a "must ride" trail, it's really an honest to goodness all mountain trailriding experience, just be sure to start early at the sitio batangas trailhead and sufficiently carboload and carry a lot of water and trailfood. MABUHAY ANG PinoyMTBiker!

hi michael, the sta ines trailride with a dip at the waters of kinabuan falls is a "must ride" for mt bikers. with it's pristine and natural trails, endless river crossings along the tributaries of the daraitan river amidst the scenic sierra madre mountain range. it's best to hit the trails during summer because according to the locals some portions of the river become impassable when the rainy season comes in. just give a holler and the SC will be more than glad to bring you to the kinabuan falls some trivia we found out : saw that loren legarda campaign ad on TV? that portion where that long hair and bearded army major being released by the group of ka roger took place somewhere in the river area in sta ines Nice Trail ride you got there Guys... Hope we could visit your trails this Summer... SArap Maligo sa falls haha

Very cool pics. The vivid narration of the ride by sir Arci makes me drool even more. Sir, if I may ask, since I’m also a member of the under desaya part. Is there a safe place near the trailhead to park a car so as to make the ride shorter and enable me to go home before sunset?

gary: i noticed that there is a barangay office somewhere near the start of that sitio batangas road (trailhead) you may want to talk with the barangay people to park over there and pay some fee or perhaps park at the sierra madre hotel then go a couple of kilometers downhill to sitio batangas. of course you need to pedal uphill to come back for your car, but its a mild uphill naman (pwedeng pagtiyagaan). if the pasig riders plan to hit kinabuan, i would suggest that you start at the trailhead not later than 0800 for you to enjoy at least an hour dip at kinabuan. then target a trip back not later than 1300 (starting at the sta inez barangay proper). you can bring pack lunch or pass by the sta ines store, have your lunch cooked before going to kinabuan and have lunch after your dip at kinabuan. good luck

Great ride guys.... would like to thank the hellriders that share this route to us ( mountg, freeman, tolits, milo).. and to those who joined hehe hwag sana kayo madadala ;D But happy we are from hitting this trail, we have ill news to deliver to you.... when we spoke to the local NGO lady there at the dumagat area near the falls (which she is also working with greenpeace as she said), she share some news regarding the plans of Manila Water to create a watershed in the vicinity in the near future to supply water on the surrounding areas which will destroy the falls itself, and much worst will relocate the dumagats. She said they will soon launch their website (www.pcimission.org or regarding this matter and to spread news and awareness on this issue... hope it doesn't happen. we'll soon find out, and if it is i think we should help them in every little way that we could... spread awareness.
