Now that I am fully retired and somewhat of a retarded senior citizen also, I can only dream and pretend like Walter Mitty na I was your 4th companion. That I was keeping abreast of 3 PinoyMTBiker hardcore XC riders padyak per padyak going up yonder north mountainous faces. Oh that would be youthful and pure living for me. How I wish. How i wish.
Thanks for sharing the pictures Janix. If anything else, these pictures act as appetizer prelude to Dec 9-10 Baguio Ride being organized lately ... but at much soft porn scale of course. Maybe...that I can join?

Hats off to you guys........ true blue mountainbikers! more like a shooter (get it? ).hehehe great trip guys ;D .i hope when you guys plan something like this you let "some of us" know about it kate is right. but lo and behold........the lodge at kabayan is good for 2 folks so we had to take 2 rooms. paul and janix in 1 room and me by my lonesome, huhuhu. freeman is "takwil", hehehe. janix is "querida", hehehe. ;D. anyways, it really didnt matter becoz we were so d@mn tired that nobody in their right mind would do 'IT', hehehe. ;D tofi, dont worry buddy. the next time we do this ride we will be more prepard with better logistics and ideas for the route. paul and i just opened up a 'can of worms' during this trip. a ride that'll make a permanent imprint on your brain and your butt, hehehe. folks that'll join might even quit mountainbiking altogether becoz the next trip that paul and i will be planning will be the ""IT"" ride, by XC standards that is. but i hope paul finishes his project asap and that i remain a bum for this to push through. it'll take a while but it'll materialize one way or another. and yes, paul will post this ride here in PinoyMTBiker. i just dunno when, hehehe. ;D

here's my side of the story and some pics...... it was oct, friday the 13th. me and paul were supposed to meet at yellow cab timog at 9pm but had to move it to 10pm. paul got there first (coz i was late by 30mins due to the slight drizzle) and bumped into ef aka skarhead. we were inviting ef to tag along but he wasn't prepared, hehehe, so he acted as an 'escort' for me and paul while biking to victory liner cubao. upon getting to victory liner, alas, busses are full and the only trip that was able was the 130am trip. so we were forced to wait for almost 2 hours. we ate snacks at a 7-11 nearby where we wasted time as well. fastforward. got to baquio by 730 and ate breakfast at jollibee. at this point, we were way behind schedule by about 2 hours. here's me and janix after eating at jolibee. just wanted to know the before and after of this ride, hehehe. here's my rear end and the concrete roads getting out of metro baquio. the backpack i was carrying weighs at 4.5kgs. was it heavy? yes if you're gonna ride a bike. lesson learned: use panniers or lessen weight. avoid carrying a heavy backpack during long rides. that's something and paul and janix learned the hardway, hehe. fastforward....got to abuklao midafternoon. here's some pics. it was darn hot. the sun burned us to some degree. none of us had any sunblock unfortunately but the sunburn wasn't painful. we just got darker i guess. by the way, this is the lowest point (elevation) we ever got to this ride. from here on, its uphill galore. took us forever just to get to bokod, benguet. the massive abuklaw dam. it powers most of benguet, if im not mistaken. on top the dam. the other side creates a lake like environment. and that's me on the other side. fast forward....got to bokod at 6pm. by this time were 30kms away from kabayan and it was getting pretty dark. that was only half the story. the thing that bothered us most were our butts/crotches. they were da*n busted even before we got to bokod. it might have been the backpack that added weight on our as*es or it couldve been the never ending pedalling we had to endure. i brought a headlamp and janix had a beamer so we weren't afraid of the dark. its just that we thought our as*es wouldn't make it in one piece, literally. something we have to take in consideration the next time we do this. so, we waited for the bus' last trip but unfortunately the darn thing doesn't have a roof rack and didn't bother to take us in. thank god an isuzu elf truck rolled by and we hitched a ride. thank god for this good samaritan who happens to be a retired cop of kabayan. the trip though was pretty shaky. my arms ached after the ride from holding on to the roll bars of the truck and to the bicycles so it doesnt get to hit my face. it was the craziest truck ride i ever had (other than sittin atop the bus during the kabayan trip a couple or years back). the 3 of us were like moaning every time the truck hit a rock or a ditch. checked in at kabayan lodge before 9pm. took a cold bath (no hot water unfortunately) and slept. staying at the lodge costs P200/day. can accomodate 20 persons with communal toilet and bathrooms. each room can accomodate 2 persons with a double decked bed. no airconditioning, no fan, but its ok coz its so cold you wouldn't need it anyways. thank god they have fleece blankets, hehe. see pics above posted by janix for the facade of the lodge. kabayan is basically a quite place. it has a liquor ban of some sort and even has a curfew. this place is situated in valley kind of setting. see pics above posted by janix. after waking up, we went to some of the attractions here in kabayan and those happen to be mummies. went to opdas and got these pics. just me and the bones i feel alone in this picture, hehehe. ;D and then, we went to pulag's drop off point. its where backpackers start their climb to pulag. got these pics along the way. so the direction is going back to bokod. the drop off point happens to be near kabayan wires here are cables for cable cars. its how folks here transport there goods and themselves, hehe. no one swinging by unfortunately. barangay eddet that leads to eddet river, a famous landmark for folks scaling up mt pulag via kabayan. unfortunately due to time constraints, we didn't have the chance to go up the river. here's the drop off point for folks who want to scale up mount pulag. sign board courtesy of san beda mt. org. paul said they put this sign becoz a lot of san beda climbers got lost a couple of times, hehehe. ;D here's a shot at kabayan's rice fields and from here on, we bade goodbye and head off to baquio. paul and i took front seats and did a review of what we just did. it was horrifying. from abuklaw to kabayan, it was a continous uphill. no wonder it took forever to get us to kabayan. and also, the fun part is the section from bokod to kabayan (vice versa) which we unfortunately rode via the elf last night and then the bus going down. the road was treacherous. there were times that my heart fell on the floor every time the driver turned on every corner. funky driver was even txting which made me even nervous. i think i even prayed that he doesn't get a txt message. yes folks! ironic as it seems but most of the trip to kabayan doesnt have a deadspot for cellular signals. kabayan now has cellular signals. while going back to baquio, bus driver gave a chance to snap a pic at ambulaw dam when she was open. here's what it looks like when one of her floodgates are open. total mist even if your 300 meters away.

speaking of burns... this is what happened to me... what's the total km from starting point to destination?

what's the total km from starting point to destination? as per paul's info, its 84kms from baguio to kabayan. unfortunately, we had to hitch a ride from bokod to kabayan which is 20kms away. so we pedaled something like 60+kms. the fun route happens to be from bokod to kabayan coz it can only accomodate one bus at a time and the scenic views and treacherous ridges. more than one bus would mean finding a wider road to stop so both busses can give way early on. paul and i were actually amazed becoz of the development going on w/ regards to the roads. last time i've been there (2001), it used to be 90-95% offroad going to kabayan from baguio. now its something like 70-75% and still counting. even the cellphone signals amazed us, hehehe. ;D

hey nice ride guys. i miss the cordilleras. i've been on a backpacking trip to Mt. Pulag (2000) with a side trip in Kabayan, because the organizers of our climb was Kabayan Development Group Inc. (Kadegi). Yeah, it's a very peaceful town. I was sorry we had to leave it after staying for one night. I wish I could ride as strong as you guys. Janix is well, he's riding/training at least 5,000 feet above sea level. he he he, the trails here would be peanuts to him, ha ha ha
