with indulgence from the more experienced downhill brothers & sisters, i just wanted to share a meandering "ride report" from a newbie. ride date : 12/23/07 participants : 80% experienced 20% newbies trail : puppy's trail & ridge 3 first trail was the "puppy's trail". renowned for its flowing turns and easy speed that newbies like me can learn from and have fun riding. one of the more experienced bikers fell into a cement canal and had his face punctured by pins from flat pedals from a bike that was thrown into the air by another rider who tried to avoid him (and this happened with his full face helmet on). there's a lesson to be learned here boys & girls : wear your goggles with your full face helmet. and this happened within 5 mins from our "opening prayer" led by bans. whew! was "iffy" on the first couple of turns as the downhill path was "magulo", littered with stones of varying sizes, making line choice difficult. but somehow settled into the groove and by thinking that the ruts/bumps can be eaten up by my bike with no problem (at a certain speed of course). also had to act as a "sweeper" (the rider that ensures that nobody gets left behind) to ria, a law student who was an mtb newbie. it was nice because i could let her go ahead, wait for a couple of minutes, then go blast through the trail at "learning" speed to catch up with her. all in all it was a learning experience. at the end of the trail we loaded the bikes up on 2 jeeps and we started the 1 hr ride up to the top of the mountain to do another downhill run at ridge 3. ridge 3 started out as a surprise for me. i didn't remember the start of the trail to be that "bad". big ruts were all over the place, grass and some branches on the trail, etc... line choice difficult. learned from the more experienced dh guys that ridge 3 became like that whenever it rained. learned that to negotiate the bumps better you need to gain speed and "float" over them or else you will wallow in each and every bump. had to walk some portions, rode some portions, etc... then the trail cleared up and became fast single tracks . mike, one of our ride mates, was freaked out when i caught him; apparently a big snake was crossing the trail path. i'm going to get freaked out too if i saw a big snake in front of me hahahha. i've been doing clipless since day 1, but this was the only time i learned that you could flow with the bike better by just "committing" and accepting that you are locked in instead of fighting it and unclipping every rough patch of trail. aside from accepting the fact that you are clipped in, you can ride better by being an extension of the bike suspension by squatting and letting your legs/shoulders absorb the bumps/ruts and go faster. i guess we clipless dh newbies need more saddle and crash time (you can't have one without the other sadly) to learn the ins & outs of going down the hill. apologies for these pictures, was too busy riding my bike, which i know is 1000% more capable than me the bikes piled up on the jeep our two fil-am friends paolo and ted were amazed at the sight yours truly, trying his best "poser" smile at puppy's trail hope to learn more about riding!!! thanks to dirt dawg, bob, alvin kasmott, shinji-san, mike of sandwich, and the rest of the ride mates

OMG news update: si ryan pala tinamaan ng pedal of jovan ....
according to the report eh, ryan fishtailed while jovan was behind, then when ryan bailed he fell short then jovan(the rider behind him) bailed and ryan got smacked ....... sad tho....
part of the game ... heheheh... i remembered i did that also to arjuna way back mga 99' then he got fish net by the barb wire fence of one of the houses hehehe..... fun to watch tho....
lesson learned: mechanical brakes LOCK and become dangerous when used at high speeds.........

Sorry to hear about Ryan's mishap with Jovan's pedals. @ Badong, Speaking of locking brakes... remember what George did long ago when his RST mechanical brakes locked just before the start of his run? Hehehe. Fly, fly, fly.. the bicycle flies!

Buddy Why did Ryan's Shorts fell? baka maluwag, (free size) hehhehehehe
Most likely hinabol ni sir Jovan si Ry, (raced each other).
See what happens when you tail someone riding fast and he crash, in front of you, you also crash.
Chicanos have a word for it: "DISTANCIA AMIGO"
(In Dh race minimum of 2 minute interval before next rider released? remember?)
TAGS? Freeride freeride lang mga brad take it easy, yes, train like it's a race, but safety first.
> Heal fast, Ryan dirt dawg, (expert candidate)
See you sa 07 huling hirit (last chance) ride dec 29!
ULY pa hitch?

Hi guys!. I am getting hooked into downhill biking especially bunny hopping while rolling down the rugged trails.I really enjoyed it when the two wheels get on the air. I almost tooked a spill doing it the last time but manage to take control . I am afraid sooner or later I will have my first official fall(hopefullly never). any advise how to keep injuries at the minimum? Should I stop and just stick to XC?

@mootski- why stop if you can do it both, my advise is learn the art of crashing, check how the other riders do it and evade severe injuries

@mootski dude...... just wear the proper safety gear i.e: proper helmet, arm pads, leg armor and body armor.... when one is equiped properly crashing is just a small part of the learning process.... relax...
your starting to crossover from aggressive trail XC riding to AM riding and from there you have 2 ways to go either you progress to DH racing/riding or Freeride big-hit(jumping n hucking stuff)....
its always scary the first few couple 'o times but once you get the hang of it.... it becomes addictive... like coffee and sinangag! hehehehe ride on dude!

@psyblade, thanks for the motivation, my energy is renewed! is there a thread here somewhere I can read and learn the art of crashing? REDNEBMany thanks. I will save for the downhill gears definitely. for now to minimize injuries, I stick to aggresive XC until I have it (I've always dreamed of the cool body armor) . I agree its addicting (coffee and sinangag hehehe) You guys rocks! I am hoping to ride DH with you soon.

art of crashing is best when learned first hand..... i kinda learned it by crashing cars, big bikes and falling down the stairs drunk.... hehehe
but like they say...let your equipment do the work and the mind controls the treshold...hehe
the 1st time it'll hurt and shake you down to the bone.... the 2nd time you'll see it all happen with eyes wide shut...... the 3rd time your gonna curse your bike and god cuz it hurts like hell.....
... there aint no 4th cuz after the 3rd your gonna want some more and just keep pushing the bike to the limits.....
hehehe... rock on!
