Here's something that would help riders. Let's get suggestions on how to get more riders into DH/FR.
My suggestions:
1. Ride clinic. Half-borrowed this from the threads. My twist on it: It doesn't have to be a full-blown jump & drop clinic. Just basic riding skills: trackstanding; braking; turning; bunnyhops; rolling down steep sections (stairs would be a great place to practice); dropping off even 1-2ft. ledges.
2. Host beginner rides. As I see it, a lot of DH trails (anywhere) could be rode by anyone using the most basic mountain bike. So hold beginner rides on very mellow DH trails & keep the pace fun for the participants. Just stay away from race pace. I'm sure they'd get the same rush we all do. (Hint: it should be a pace wherein everyone could wear a standard helmet or half lid)
I'm sure there are a lot more to consider being it's in the Philippines, so what else could DHers/Friders do? ;D

hi anshwa hehehe,
its kinda weird tho..... we try to bring in new blood to dh n fr but they just seem to settle for All-mountain then eventually turn into weight weenies......... i dunno brad, baka ganun trend ng gravity riding sa pinas......... hahahahaha....... it might be the effect of aging( takot ako maging weight weenie eh bka ma-classify pa ako na P___R...) hahahhahaha.........
and we're trying to fix the local mentality pa regarding DH and FR..... theres something wrong eh heheheh.......
Sometimes i wish i can just poison their minds all at once para di nakakapagod! hahahahha

Redneb, I think that's a start, brad. AM/FR muna. As long as we could get them on the same trails DHers ride. I'm almost sure the reason behind not too many people getting into DH/FR is that they think they have to get the huge rigs or that they have to hit the big drops & jumps. The truth is that they really don't have to. DH really is all about... well, riding downhill. I think easing them into it is the best bet. Just like when all of us started. We all just dabbled going down stairs & then hitting speed bumps. After some time, we tried bigger stuff - and here we are now.
I don't think anyone here would dare call you a P___R - lol!
Come to think of it Downieville is pretty much like AM/FR. It's a downhil trail w/ uphill climbs. Riders go there riding AM rigs to full-on DH rigs. That's a really good model for majority of the riders in the Philippines I think. Besides, freeriding is all about riding up to bomb down. So I guess introducing freeriding to riders would also be a great idea.
C'mon, bros. This should be the right venue for brainstorming for the future of DH/FR in the Philippines. Keep posting.

The main challenge of bringing in new blood into Dh/Fr is economics. First off, Dh/Fr bikes are quite expensive (yes, yes, I know that Seven and Turner ain't cheap too. hehe.) and are quite limited in their range of versatility.
Translation: Ika nga ni Badong, "Kaya nga downhill bike eh! Ibinababa!" Ika ng iba: "eh gusto ko madadala ko sa maraming ride ang bike ko!"
Although an exception can be cited when Bans hit Sta.Rosa with the Tank dh bike and outclimbed the lycra crowd. Hehehe.
Since most Pinoys aren't willing to shell out for another bike that is 'single-use' in their perception, getting them into the Dh/Fr arena can be quite difficult. Not to mention that this facet of mountainbiking is perhaps the most destructive, components-wise.
Translation: Ang dali palang bumigay ng Amoeba handlebar kapag bumangga ka sa outpost ng MMDA? At bakit ganito ang RST 381... bakit ayaw nang bumalik? Mababa lang naman ang drop na iyon ah.
Most of us learned this hard way, with a lot of guesswork and a lot of questionable actions since there was a lot of blind corners regarding Dh/Fr years ago. Homeless kami, ika nga. Since the trueblue Xc (and roadies) kept giving us funny looks everytime they see us. Redneb is right about the perception about other cyclists' perception towards the Dh/Fr crowd. This is the part where it will be all about convincing them that, we too, like riding on two wheels. The form may be different, but the spirit is the same.
Although I really hate it when some people riding XTR-laden bikes curse us when we outclimb them on much-heavier bikes. Lighten up (figuratively-speaking). This isn't the Marlboro Tour.
Such is not the case these days, especially now that more and more companies are offering more components/built bikes catering to the Dh/Fr crowd, making the setup question a lot easier. However, an unforeseen side to this was the influx of people buying dh/fr/even am bikes because:
1. It reminds him of his motorcycle. Pogi di ba?
2. Buying one for the sake of having one, and having a bike hanging from the rear of the car is sooooo trendy these days.
3. Nabuyo ng kapitbahay (not a bad thing really).
So does it fall to the rest of us to show them how it's done (or used, rather)? A lot of them want to go for it, but there will be those who refuse. Such is life eh?
Hence, the clinics are a good idea...
So kailan ba matutuloy ang UPLB na iyan?!

Hehehe. So what about all that contact cement in your tires? I still want a concete explanation about it. Care to enlighten us about it?

hehehehehe......
everyone has a good point and its all true.
the DH Crew/Haooh and FAB tried a reuninon recently, it woke up a few us, oldskul and youngblood but to sum us all up we were just 40+| that day ......
Trans: Sa 3 beses sa isang linggo ako mag ensayo sa tagaytay, dehins na ako tinatanong ng mga taga doon kung mag isa lang ako, kc sawa na sa mukha ko at sanay na ligaw na bala ako.
but that day when we had a reunion ..... na shock daw sila sa dami! yung mga jeep nataranta! yung mga tindahan naubusan ng coke at ice tubig! yung lomi haus nataranta yung chef! even yung buong palengke ng laurel nagulanta sa atin! hahahahaha............
that was a very fun day...... super fun!... i reunited with my old riding buddies...... si erwin, boyet, ado, ely, bans, jeff o, jay t, wade S, psyblade, gtu and of course my maestro Arjuna(panis na sakin ngayon to!).... thats what we wanna share to the would-be DH initiates... the level and amount of fun that one can achieve just slugging it out at break neck speeds with your best buddies in the world........ and just you your bike versus the trail.....

budget set-up...hmmmmmm....... we all know the SRPs on DH/FR stuff aint pretty, but whats good nowadays are LBS are now keener on giving installment payment schemes so that we could all stretch our finances to own these nice brands.....
Some LBS even carry 2nd hand/ used but not abused items at 50-60% the orig SRP then some even allow pay-lite plans......
..............then bout the venues and trails....
We have plenty of trails DH, FR or AM theyr just an hour drive.... tagaytay or sta rosa or rizal/montalban....... time management lang yan........ wake up early hit the trail go to work go home eat sleep ..... ( eh kung sa iyon lang ba time frame na maari ka mag ride eh sa baket dehins? )
Gas prices got yer tongue? hehehe.... organize gruop rides (may celpon,PinoyMTBiker, pm, shoutbox, landline) so riding expenses can be minimized by "chip-in" system....
make tambay in bike shops and jam-in with their group rides..... you'll learn faster and have a wider outlook by feeding-off a variety of other riders......
(meron nga ako nakikita naka DH bike naka DH gear paikot ikot sa MOA.. anak ng buti na lang papunta ako airport kung dehins sinagasaan ko na yun! )

more newbie fun ride invites would help. i myself got interested to try DH due mainly to the FAB thread (which got me curious) and after watching ROAM ;D sadly, up to now its still just interest.. What if liked DH pala, those rigs are deym expensivo!?? Now how do i squeeze in riding/practice time.. buti nalang there are lots of takuza riders din pala, again FAB thread is very informative and lastly.. i'm afraid to break my bones again but then again i practically bring myself at risk riding (feeling like) a seasoned AM rider on the trails and pushing myself to do pathetic hops in the city ala urban assault hahaha but still.. most of these are just fears, which accoridng to koya buds can be conquered! (very inspiring, again i got this from the FAB thread ;D ) so i guess.. more and more newbie fun ride invites thru this forum would create enough stir to lure us newbies to try out the sport.. imagine me saying.. "pucha si X and Y forum newbies a month ago, now DH action star na! now i feel very left behind.. i should join the next ride asap! ;D

the thing that i can only say is....sometimes its not the rig, its the rider...i started with an econo bike since i dont have the money then..only the passion for DH. our team sta. cruz groundzero started out with generic mongoose and rst forks but still we learned how to huck and jumps with our rigs and compete with good results, when we buy new parts, the new members of our team loan our old parts and sometimes give it for free....my nephew roann "d'face" calatin started to race with a mall bike that came from my sister in law and he's 12th placer in "ang fast papa", now he's a pro. when you join a race or a ride of course others will look at your bike but once you kicked their butt, boy they gonna remember you, just imagine a 100k rig being kicked by a cheapy-cheapy rig... hahaha....thats what you called passion, once you have this in you you're an ass kicker even with your cheap bike and they cant beat that

Some XC riders here in the province are just a_ _holes that they do not know much about dh, all they know is padyak here and there but they always wonder why the form of DH is very different from theirs, and even try to compare marz with suntour or gts, sometime it brings out the evil inside me and want to say something about their silly bikes (something like: put@ng ina, sige takbo ng tayo pababa ng isarog at rockies tingnan natin kung di mauna mukha mo sa lupa sumayad kaysa sa tinidor mo!).

And the line also, "ang hirap nyan iakyat..." , trans: it will be hard to use that bike in climbing, wtf, it is a dh bike, why use it in climbing, stupid.
Some riders also are too stupid that all suspension forks are the same!

BAKA MAHATI SA GITNA! ;D

rcg; don't fret too much re XCriders, maybe they were just giving advice coz you looked hell tired climbing up... simply return the deed by inviting them to go down your route, then watch their facial expressions as they bomb down.. now give them advice after ;D

We need more races to encourage others. Most DH races now are out of town i.e. Davao, Dumaguete, Ilocos etc. Very seldom in the nearby provinces outside Metro Manila. That is why a lot of bikers in Luzon have not even seen a downhill race and don't even know what riding downhill means. Ang corny daw kasi pababa lang siya!
Also, not a lot of downhill sites nearby. I have lots of friends who are good riders but don't have the means to transport their bikes to Tagaytay. However, they would "padyak" from UP going to Patiis or Grotto (which is now closed to the public) with their FR bikes and still ride downhill with us.

I have the utmost respect for downhillers (the true ones anyway hehe). After all anybody can climb up - even by crawling up by inches using the granny or by multiple rest stops BUT I suspect that not everyone can DH. It takes lots of guts and skills - and most of us probably have neither hehehe. I for one have poor eyesight, slow reflex and limited bike handling skills (read: crashes on flat and bumps into stationary objects). First step is to convince us that we can DH in the first place. ;D

Who will appreciate DH, they think DH are for guys who have no stamina, and guys with small balls!!!!
Because DH runs only for very few minutes, they think we are nothing but losers who purchased a very expensive bike and will use it only for a few minutes per ride!!

i second answha's suggestions on how we can get more riders into DH/FR.
one of the most important thing to do here first is education or information (if you wish) on what DH/FR as an MTB discipline is all about. the what, how, when, why and where of the discipline.... what rig setup can survive an entry-level DH trail, how we can get ready for DH riding, basic skills, etc. when will we know if we are already DH-ready in terms of set-up/protective gears/skills, etc. why downhill/freeride? and where can we practice DH/FR riding skills and with whom.
i remember, i was @up tambayan one time and some DHers were exchanging their DHilling adventures and this middle aged man in a mall bike was asking if he can tag along with them because what they're doing sure sounds fun for him. i think it's not doing something because it sounds fun ONLY!!!!!, its doing it because we understand what it is and know we are ready (rig-wise) and have some basic skills to do it ( i believe XC guys who have had some dose of trailriding might be ready with the basic downhilling skills.......point and roll, getting the imaginary line, etc. (or i might be wrong).
a DH clinic and that newbie DH run they did before at the licao-licao DH site seems to be a step towards a right direction, XC guys were given a dose of some DH fun and in the process were introduced to the world of DHing and the fun (as well as risks) of doing it.
i have trailrode with a couple of guys here, newbie or whatnot and have seen them handle and bomb technical DH portions of trails, i believe that with proper training and practice here and there they are naturals for the DH/FR discipline.
somebody should organize/sponsor DH/FR Clinic and regular DH/FR Newbie rides if we want the discipline to flourish.
Long live the DH/FR MTB discipline (or for some lifestyle)!!!!!
