I prefer stem locks. But let's clarify. The thing that holds the fork to the bike is the stem & the starnut is only used to pre-load the steerer tube. So both options are safe. The stem lock just offers an added security (sort of). The stem lock is heavier though.

dodes/bords, my vote is for STAR NUT, to preload the upper cup bearings, for dh.
why do you call it star nut?
some bikers (gay) call it "flower" haaay!
What security guard? with batuta? what agency is that?
Basic knowledge:
If you are using a dual crown dh fork, its the top "top crown" that will hold your Dh fork from slipping from the head tube, properly tighten and you will have peace of mind like having a security guard,
If single crown it's your stem.
plus,
the seated wedge compression ring (part of your thread less headset) keeps your fork from slipping.
you have to unseat it (by lifting your front wheel, and whacking your sterrer tube down,) before you can pull out your fork.
if weight weenie, as in a DH racer you save grams with star nut,
if not go with your stem lock.
The Dh fashion lespu wont arrest you hehehe

FLOWER for XC... you don't really go dropping or hucking or really hataking on an xc bike... so the flower is good enough, also resolves 1 weight weenie issue...
STEM LOCK for DH... security brothers... baka pag tira mo eh magulat ka paglanding hawak mo manibela saka stem, yung bike, nasa likod mo na at tatagain ka na! ngiyaw!

Im using a Single Crown fork, (Marz 66sl) i want to use my Amoeba Stem Lock but the lock nut of the stem lock wouldnt fit the bottom part of the steertube, =( so im forced to use a starnut. i do light DH, AM & some dirtjumping, so far my bike is still intact =)

also you can't fit stem lock on steerer tube of all fox forks,
why?
they want you to use star nut hehehhehehe
unless you tabas your stem lock nut, (torno) to fit inside their steere tube.

@tribal TECHNO - There are other brands of stem lock aside from the world-famous "Amoeba", there is Da Bomb and HeadLock....
da bomb stemlocks' lowers shaft (w/c is inserted at the bottom of the steerer tube.) are slightly slimmer...
HeadLock(medyo mahirap hanapin na ngayon) as i have seen it, is also quite slim...
I think those brands are pwede to fit your fork... peero it's good to bring your bike sa bikeshop for better fitting before you buy it!
'starnut' for me? r u nuts? me i am!
