if you can do it, dont hold back! do it! never mind things that distract your focus. i like hitting big drops and also some gaps. these things are in our reality now, just like learning how to bunny hop or even a wheelie drop or dropping on a bangketa. a lot of people riding thier bikes are afraid of a bangketa. are you afraid of it? if you can do these stuffs then you can definitely hit BIG Drops.

@great Teacher Ulysses: Whoa! Easy there, brad! Read my post again. I said I wasn't flaming nor dissing. Let's not start a flamefest. Read my post - it's very objective.
I think you've missed the point of my post. The point is that it's not really good to be preaching too much "progression" whilst forgetting so many factors involved in a sport. Progress at your own pace but don't make it sound like everyone else are posers.
Oh I agree. But not everyone's ready to progress as fast as you guys. That's why a lot of riders are really good in other countries because they let their riders progress at their own pace. You want to progress fast, that's your choice. But don't be preachin' when no one's askin'.
Yep, nag-DH ako. I used a taiwanese hardtail XC frame w/ a judy fork. Then a friend gave me his 3" travel Y-frame Trek copy when he bought his Pacific. Transfered my components to the frame & then I raced the frame at an event organized by James & Boyet. I hit the 5-foot drop on the upper section of the trail that only a few have hit back then on my 1st day riding DH at Grotto - 2nd time riding DH. So pareho lang tayo - ugly bike. I rode DH w/ whatever I had & yes, I wasn't riding a nice bike like those whom I rode w/ sa Tagaytay & started hangin' out with. I rode & raced using my XC helmet, knee, shin & elbow guards. Good enough to say I didn't have money & still went for it? So don't preach to me about loving the sport or progression.
By the way, when you began by saying that getting into a sport or hobby, you should already know how much you'll be spending you sounded somewhat elitist the way you posted it. If you want DH to be HUGE in the Philippines, one very important goal to pursue is to make it affordable. So when you assume anyone who gets into the sport knows they have to hit the big stuff outright & accept the fact they have to be replacing parts even on their first month, that's not the way to make it appealing to more people. Get my drift?
Uhuh... You sure I'm rich? Hmm... Just cause I'm in the US doesn't mean I have money. Road bike? I would if I had the money. Besides, I love riding trails so I'll stick w/ my mountain bike.
Nope, I don't want to get hurt. That's why I practice hard. How did you know I don't practice hard? You don't even know me so you wouldn't know how my mind works nor how I train in whatever I'm doing. You sure I don't know technique? You probably haven't read any of my posts on the subject of technique. How could you come up with that conclusion? Just because I don't post the latest jump or hit I've done doesn't mean I don't know anything. Easy lang, 'tol.
And you think mountainbiking is the only thing I do that supposedly "hurts"? You have no effin' idea of the stuff I've done & still doing so don't assume jack! It was an objective post so don't go personal on me, BRAH.
Oh I do. That's why I'm still healthy & haven't gotten really hurt too much.
See this is what I didn't find good about the way you're posting. You call those who cannot hit the stuff you hit, posers? What the eff did they do to you guys they have to be called posers? So I guess XC guys are posers? I guess I'm a poser 'cause I consider myself a mountainbiker who does XC, trails, DJ, FR & DH? C'mon, dude let's stop the stereotyping & all the hate. We're Filipinos - we don't have hate.
Before you rant on me, read my post CAREFULLY. I even gave PROPS to Buddy. Am I hesitant to believe the 43 footer? Yes I am. That's why I was clarifying. So now that someone's questioning the hit, you get all worked up? And why you? I was posting to Buddy, not you. I actually got amped up when I figured it was him because I remembered how everyone was fired after seeing him hit that 12-footer. So take it easy on your posts, man.

nyahahahha......... wow fight! omfg!......... no fighting pls.... dnt worry its gna be well documented this time....... phone cam video lang kasi yung 30 footer nung 04....... its all good tho.... im not into videos taht much .. keepin a memory of the event in my mind is enuf fer me tho..... never needed to prove squat to anyone too... just myself....lol
world class freeriders from all over the world r doin 30-40 footers more commonly nowadays tho..... im not "goin with the trends" or anythin ,..... old school peeps that know me ...just know me.......
I see sumthin worth the challenge i just go do it...... my riding style is totally independet of what everybody refers to as "trends" or " cuz everyones' doin it at the moment"...lol
thats mainstream riding......i ride my own lines, i follow my own demons ... i mean through the years iv prolly lost "Racing speed".... but my gravity "handling" never ceased tho.... lol
its just that iv been riding for so long and what everybody thought was impossible 3-5 yrs ago were actually broken..... see we hav bigger, bolder n nastier jumps nowadays at national races, we hav speed sections n tricky switchbacks now with berms....lol
back in the day we didnt hav those... we had jumps that were insanely calculated, drops were like 10-15 ft, cornering was so stone age that ud actually ride sideways on a flat wall to make it a useful berm..... we grew up riding rock, roots, cliffs and more rocks...lol....
Riding progressions are were fast cuz there were only a few of us b4, so we all kept on feeding off each other .....
and we also rode ugly-bombers b4...... its not what u ride its how u ride it............lol
burp.....

and one more thinggy ... its like $350 for a helmet cam and like $2000 for a movie cam.....
I prefer my webcam for amateur stuff tho...lolx mali!....um i mean documenting aint fun on a digicam........
i kinda mellowed down on gaps ..lol have this nasty rep of overshooting trannies and flippin ma; bike over lol........... i kinda miss rock roots and cliff riding..... its what we where born into when we started trail riding....
physics indeed comes handy on these kinds of sports......specially "trajectory" and "force"...LOL

80mm movie cams do pwetty well on tripods plus they got good picture quality......
plus digicam mounts need counter weights on the other end..... kinda stressful on the neck tho..........hihihhi....

anshwa - Fire in the Hole! hehehe.... i'm not just saying it to you. these are just my words of encouragements to some of our guys. i'm not saying na "mayaman ka" to you, it's just a common filipino expression which is to give some people an idea of what they have and that they could find some things to be simple but not really spending that much. well, im not an elitista, dehins rin artista, hehehe. science is also important, getting fit is also a scientific and basic approach in our sport/hobby. also sorry if i offended you by that post, i didn't meant to, but in reality there's a lot of posers here (sorry), but we love you pa rin kasi cool sila. PEace tayo! i don't want to fight. just adding some spice. hehehe. I love you all!!! Ride tayo after i fixed my broken dropout. c'mon lets join us! hehehe! Mwah!

define posers. anyone who looks better than they can ride? anyone whose equipment is beyond their riding capabilities? what if u've got the money, would u not buy the best equipment u can afford, the best shirt u can buy? i know my bike can handle so much more than what i can give it. sure sometimes i feel bad that some riders can ride a section much better w/ an inferior equipment but what can u do. everyone is different... some got the skills and some can afford the equipments to buy some skill. just the way life is. we make do w/ what we've got. now i'm offended... kidding! ;D

Post by Blister T on Jun 12, 2006 16:11:01 GMT 8
nice one peachy
hahaha typical pinoy mentality... if someone got something they cant afford, automatically he's considered a poser or mayabang...
so what if u have a very very expensive bike but dont ride as good as a pro? if u can afford to buy one then who's stopping you from buying one? its not like you stole it from someone... cmon, realistically thinking, if u have unlimited cash, wouldnt u buy urself the best bike and components out there? if u ask me, if i had that much money, id buy myself a Ferrari Enzo even though the roads here in Manila will rip the car apart... who cares? if u can afford it, then whats wrong with buying one? right?
I have a friend who always has a "magazine" bike, meaning, the latest/best and most expensive parts are in his bike the moment they come out in the market. One time he had a verbal argument with someone in a race in Maarat because someone said "mahal-mahal ng bike, bihira naman mag-ride." He just simply said to the guy "Kung may pera ka rin naman, bibili ka rin ng ganito, di ba? Inggit ka lang" What they dont know is that this friend of mine has a lot of hobbies, and DH is only one of them. In fact he is well known Karter, competing around Asia, also a professional 250cc bike rider and also competes in Macau for Formula 3. He also has a Scuba school in Panglao, Bohol, joins amateur Jet-Ski races in Subic and finds it fun to sail anywhere around Luzon on a sail boat. That's the reason why he doesnt ride his DH bike that much, he just has too many hobbies (and money) and so little time, and those narrow-minded people will diss him and call him a poser because he doesnt ride like a pro. haha, i find it amusing... if they only know the other things he does aside from biking. just because u ride DH doesnt mean thats the only hobby u got...
I also know a guy who collects bikes, motorcycles, ATV's, classic choppers & cars, etc... he doesnt ride much, he just plainly loves machines. he builds the most expensive downhill bikes possible, only to ride it once or twice in a month. So do I call him a poser? No. He can afford his hobby right? So why diss him? Its not like he's hurting somebody or stealing from somebody just to build an expensive bike... in fact he is 52 years old. I even praise the guy for having such a heart in doing something he loves. Sure he doesnt rip the trails as good as Joey Barba, but when he rides with us, you can see that he is very happy with what he is doing. Ive never seen him diss another rider or laugh at our bikes because I ride a generic frame or because their bike's are "bul0k" he just loves to ride and meet other riders. He even calls himself an old fart and tells people that he just loves looking at good and expensive bikes.

GTUlysses: Like you, I don't want to fight. It's just that it's a public forum & everyone reads the stuff we post so we have to set things straight. If you want to encourage riders, let's not throw the "poser" word all over the place. Every time I go to a spot where other riders are hitting something, the last thing I want to hear is smack talking about how I don't look like I would be able to hit a jump or a drop or whatever. It’s actually more evident in snowboarding for some reason. Anyway, I just ride away & hit it either when I’m alone or when the riders I’m with are cool. With friends though, I could push the limits with them. But it’s all good, man. You’re entitled to your opinion & that’s the beauty of the forums. I’d ride with yah & have a case of San Miguel after, when I get to go on vacation over there. Hopefully soon.
Poseur & Blister: Amen! If I had a lot of money I’d have every type of set up for every type of riding the magazines come up with & more. ;D And yes, (not only in mtbiking, though) people tend to judge you that one time they see you do something. These people are pushing the phrase, “First impressions last” too far. Ah well…
BTW, just thought about it. I have a Jeff Lenosky STP frame & don't do a fraction of the stuff Lenosky does w/ his bike... Shoot! I'm a poser! ;D All in good light, guys.

no fighting... just riding and havin' drinks after. i just had an awesome ride yesterday. went and drove for 2 hours to Whistler yesterday just to get only 3 runs before they close the lift due to a thunderstorm. when it started pouring cats and dogs we decided to head back to the city (nice and sunny back there) and rode the local mtns instead. it doesn't get dark until 9.30p here these days so plenty of time. a faster/better rider took us into some really techy steep/rooty shore riding.... slide slide slide. d@mn fun! i'm feeling it today. the first time i saw this guy, i (guilty) thought he was a poser... well it turned out that he is. a year after we started a group called teamposers. ;D we all wanna look good no matter how bad (or good) we ride.

A poser is an individual that talks bigger than what he can do.....
An individual that posseses equips beyond his technical capability is called "Fortunate" cuz he owns a nice rig..... never diss a fortunate person as a poser ... thats crab mentality and "envy" peeps...
A fortunate person can always be trained n developed to a certain lvl of riding distinction .... never pre-qualify...... always be open minded....... single track mentalities died in the 70s....
I remember when i 1st entered DH riding.... they said i was a poser too....... ask sila Yetiman n the old school peeps, i had the gear but i lacked skill..... eventually i fed off them n i evolved into the monster i am today...........
during my early days i always ended up inside an ambulance or in a hospital.......... i lived n i learned.......... i gained respect in some strange way...lol
I played pro for a while but couldnt cut top 10 always ended up in 11-30 lol... I played semi-pro after vanishing for 1 yr... i went 4th instantly....... cuz i learned...
Law of evolution: from poser- apprentice- rated rider - legend its how open n willing u are to develop its not what u have or where u stand that counts its "HOW FAR DO YOU WANT TO GO"?
Posers are ppl who talk bigger than they can actually swallow..... and i dnt see anyone like that here........ PinoyMTBiker riders ride on their own pace n lvl... and its logically sound the way i see it.
Ive yet to meet someone that can actually talk bigger than me........ the only reason the pros and a few aussie riders respect me is cuz im the only one doing what i can technically do....
They wouldnt dare do what i do cuz its insane.... they say its impossible.. i prove to them it is possible............ thats respect.... and they got stuff taht i cant do too......... and i was a poser b4 come to think of it........eheheh
Give this post some thought it myt do evry1 some good n stop fighting! amf! lol
