Hello, Friends.
Let me add more info for the upcoming KOM race.
Firstly, let me define the category.
OPEN/Elite Category - For both road and mountain. These are the guys who perform almost like the pros. Yet, they are not Pros, nor part of the Phil.Cycling Team. They also have never participated the "Tour ng Pilipinas". They are just simply strong. Most of them live their lives between their legs. I mean, they bike all the time (and not something else) Perhaps they are employed. Perhaps, not. It doesn't really matter. If you join here, expect to battle it out with the hard hitting guys like Roldan Antonio, Timmy Cruz, Rex Cortex.... I suppose you get the message.
CAT A B and C. Generally, this is the category for the working class. This is the group who usually join the “age-group” category. Most of them are employed, professionals or entrepreneurs. Guys who try to balance Work, Family and Cycling. CAt A are the strongest. The likes probably of Ricky Montelibano, or John Umali, or Jimmy Cadena. They are constant podium finishers. They represent the best of working class.
Cat B are those guys who have been mountain biking for quite some time now, and quite as strong, but not as strong or competitive as the CAT A’s. In an age category race, their highest placing may be top 20. They are also not as consistent. At times, they end up at the middle of the pack, or even at the rear end. Personally, this is my category. Expect to compete with guys like Boy Sinco, Jinggo Hervas, or Romel Lindayag.
Cat C is for beginners and recreational riders. They may also be strong but “racing” is new to them. This category is also for those who are quite new to the sport.
Ladies Category - Only the real ones, please. Pinay at heart not qualified. There is no sub category for the ladies.
Notes: The names I mentioned are mostly mountain bikers. In the road races they join, they may be classified under a different category. Like Romel lindayag. He may be new to road racing, but he’s been into mountain biking for quite some time now, and indeed strong enough to compete with the Cat B’s. When he gets back to road racing, he still is a Cat C .
The working-class category does not prevent an unemployed guy to join. It’s just that you hardly would find an unemployed cyclist who is not fit enough to join the open/elite. The mountain bike community is small, we almost know each other. If an unemployed guy joins the working-class category, we will allow him, so long as he doesn’t have the lungs and legs of Roldan Antonio. It is also not based on social status. You may be a “balut” or “fishball” vendor, or an operator of a “sari-sari store”. The idea here is to level the playing field. You compete with guys who also balance work, family and cycling.
Registration:
You can pre register at the Shop, All Terra, starting on Monday. For working-class the fee is P250. For Open/Elite the registration fee is P150. There will be Cash Prize for Open/Elite only. Working-Class will get cool carbon fibre medals plus some bike goodies.
On the race day, registration will start at 6:30 am. Registration cut-off for ladies is 7:15am. For Mtb, registration cut-off is at 8:15am. For Road, cut-off is at 9:15am. Open/Elite (Road or Mountain) cut-off is 10:00 am. There will be someone assigned at the registration table until 10:00 am.
RACE PROPER We will start the race with the ladies at 7:30 am.
At 8:30 am, we will release the Mountain Bike category. Cat A will be released first. After 5 minutes, Cat B will be released. Then Cat C after another 5 minutes.
At 9:30 am we will release the Road Category. Same sequence with MTB category.
At 10:30 we will release the Open/Elite category to start with Road, then followed by Mtb after 5 minutes.
After the race, awarding will follow right away at a beautiful spot inside Timberland properties- The Veranda. There will also be a raffle of bike stuff. Our partner restaurant, Hot Rocks will also be selling steaks for as low as P100.00 per meal (with rice already). It will be a festive race weekend. A good time to mix it up with our roadie friends. There will be grilling, ice cold sodas, and a lot of bike stories. Honda Cars Kalookan will also let us test-drive the new Civic 2007. And available for your close inspection will be the 2007 CRV. A different way to end a hard but exciting and fun race.
I hope to see you all there. It’s about time you face THE WALL.

To those who emailed me Re tire size guidelines. Here is the guideline: There is none actually. You can choose any tire size you want. • 1.0 • 1.25 • 1.5 • 1.95 • 2.0 • 2.1 • 2.25 • Knobby or slick Tires. KOM is a Fun Race. Although a fun race, it is still a race up a mountain. Up a steep mountain, to be specific. And on cemented roads. If you just want to finish it, or conquer it, any tire size would do. But if you want to be competitive, or you are aiming for your personal best, the narrower the tire size the better for you. And don't forget to inflate it with a higher pressure than what you would normally pump-in for an off-road ride. Edmund
