It was my first time to be a marshall @ the Mens health race. It was kinda boring at first especially being alone at your post (how i miss my old fone!! ) waiting for the race to start.waiting for the next batch.but when u see the first pack of racers(especially MTB),you kinda feel the excitement as well.feeling a bit of a rush seeing 'em bombing thru.nice seeing familiar faces/friends as well and cheering them on.seeing the "tiger look" on their faces ;D. one thing i noticed is that the racers can really get disoriented due to fatigue and excitement as well. there were 2 big arrows already pointing to where they need to proceed where i was standing yet at least 40% of the runners/riders kept on asking which direction they need to go to.
Really a great experience it was. Another thing about being a marshall is its not just point and that's it. Having vital info's on how far more to go,where the next water station is(runners),who passed who etc is important as well. and keeping an eye out to racers (crashing/falling) needing help.getting them and their bikes to a safer location where they won't be ran over by the rest of the pack.
I remember Bruce asking me why i brought with me a back pack.told him i had a sandwich (good thing i brought one or i might have eaten leaves or roasted one of the goats there ;D) but i also bought a first aid kit (bandages, alcohol etc.),tool kit and lots of water just in case somebody needed it.and a few did
if i'm not joining the race for fun, being a marshall will definitely be the next option.
