I will try gadgets88. I will type improntu whatever comes into mind.
Now that I am confined to sick quarters recovering from a broken collarbone, I really feel out of place and even feel guilty joining postings here. I feel I don't belong anymore. That I am forcing myself to be credible as PinoyMTBiker. Parang I am all talk..but no walk. How can I walk (go biking) nga naman?
But again, accidents do happen and it is part of mountainbiking. It is just a question of when will you fall? In my case, since 2003 when I joined every weekend PinoyMTBiker fun ride up to Oct 20, 2007, I was accident free. Maybe minor falls earning minor nicks, bites, scrapes, scratches where after a day or two, wound healed. Not when I broke my right collarbone however. Todate, it has been 7 weeks and 5 days that I can't mount the bike.
The secret to recovering from a broken bone is digging deep into yourself and saying "This is the biggest fight of my life yet. I will recover!" I have to recover..my golly. I love to go back to mountainbiking so much...there is no ifs and buts about recovering.
Well the least the orthosurgeon did to me was immobilized me for 4 weeks using figure of 8 brace and arm sling so broken ends of collarbone remained touching each other. Hoping that soft scar tissues that oozed out first week would harden (calcify) if I succeeded in staying immobile. Which is easier said than done. And this is where the doctor failed miserably. Considering me perhaps as his millionth broken clavicle patient, he sent me away as another statistic with nary any instructions how and why stay not moving.
Via magic of internet of course, I found the answers why I should stay immobile, what do I need to do to stay immobile, duration and stages of healing (1st week it is all Pain and painkillers), (2nd week I still have to be spoonfed, bathed, and dressed by mayor-domo), ...
(to be continued. Holidays are here. Busy busy busy. Hell...I still have til Jan 8 to finish anwering questions asked).
During the first week that I was reeling in PAIN and was under heavy pain killers, I ate most nutritious healthy food. Diet consisted of linagang baka and heaping vegetables one day, big cuts of boiled prime fish and heaping vegetables next day, chicken arroz caldo and lugaw with liver the following day, including lots of fruits, juices, and glass of milk and 1000mg calcium Sandoz daily. Minimized coffee to 2x per day. Do not drink and smoke. I knew I will be gaining weight. But this was the trade off for my bones to heal faster.
For 2nd, 3rd, 4th week, I more or less ate same nutritious food type I was being fed first week. I gained 10 lbs after a month. But x-ray revealed that broken collarbone overlapped each other and started calcifying. I attributed faster healing to good nutrition.
(to be continued)
