Biking is healthy, recreational and therapeutic.
Yes, but in my case as a surviving patient of an incurable and fatal disease like Cerebral Malaria, its a matter of life or death. Building and maintaining good health and strong immune system is my one chance to survive. Of course the greatest chance is my faith in God.
Are you in the same boat? Can you share your feat? How did biking helped you or how did it affect you? I know Im not alone, there are the likes of the great Lance Armstrong, our very own Gary Valenciano, etc.
Why not we share our stories in this thread to enlighten and give hope to others who might be looking for the same answers.
As you ride, be blessing!
Ride for Life,
Pastor Ernie

@ flipnidaho
Congrats po sir, we know very well that many people are realy struggling in that area. And sometimes even they do something about it... it's too late. Yes, and sad to say some even failed to do something.
With biking, you spend. But for positive results. With smoking, alcohol, etc... you spend. But what are the end results? What do we get in the long run?
Sir flipnidaho, congrats po again. God bless you and more power.
Ride for life.

As you ride, be blessing! Ride for Life, Pastor Ernie our prayers are on you pastor ernie... as for me i can say biking did helped my previous problem... i was an active athlete back in the old days.. I play basketball almost 2-3 times a week... basketball was my life... 8 years ago i got into an accident... my shoulders got dislocated and I had to stop from playing basketball unless i have a shoulder operation... with this condition I had ZERO exercise... all i did was eat, party sleep and work... my inborn illness came out... I was diagnosed to have MVP (Mitral Valve Prolapse)... my doctor told me that this can only be an inborn sickness.. it may have been unnoticed before because of my lifestyle.. I was always active in all sorts of sports and especially in basketball... that was my cardio exercise.. but because these activities were gone... my heart gave up and showed the signs of an MVP patient... I had heart palpitations... its like ur always in a shock! I easily get tired even when in bed! One day I had to bring myself to the doctor and from there I learned about my condition... I was given a "stress test ECG" to check if my condition worsens when I get tired or if it gets better... God is still good indeed! my condition became better when I get into cardio exercise... from there I decided to go biking... that time that was the only exercise I knew that would give me good cardio... after a couple of years... i had my heart checked again (through 2D echo) and it appears my heart is doing better now! MVP has been cured!! Ill maintain this sport and thank God for this blessing... stay healthy peeps! pedal power!

@ bleachstreak God is good! I would like to mention to you that I had MVP too way back since 1989. Proir to that I was an athlete of different sort of sports and a serious Muay Thai practitioner. But I was sidelined due to this. But the same, I was able to defeat the illness as certified by almost the same series of physical tests as yours. My latest stress test result is way above average, athletic level actualy and now Im not limited to do any type of work. Cardio workout is best for us who had cases like this, I guess a visit to the doctors once in a while and keeping a healthy lifestyle/diet will also help. Im thankful I was able to get into biking. It realy feels good and it realy helps a lot. As of now this is the only thing I do to maintain my health. As a matter of fact, I bike almost everyday doing 30-40kms each. I know faith in God and pedaling keeps me going. I wish there could be a gathereing or fellowship ride for people like us who can inspire others to get up, beat the odds and enjoy life. Something like a ride for a cause (I know there's always one, if ever maybe it is just that I always miss the opprtunity). So for us winners who never give up on life... ...PEDAL ON and GOD BLESS!!! To all fellows who have shared, thank you very much po. I wish there will still be more who would add to this thread and share their feat... and I hope many will read and be blessed.

@ sir arcireyes Praise God! I hope I could meet people like you and Pastor Roman, somebody from our group already mentioned his name to me. And I hope I can take part in that "Fellowship Ride". @ sir isteb A Bible Study for riders like us... hmmm! That's wonderful, I hope we can work things out. Hope also that we can meet one day, somewhere. I'm from Pasig and I've been with some PinoyMTBiker's here and did some sharing time while resting in between trails and rides. I have a bike buddy, si sir hawkson who is attending with me in CCF. We are carrying a name for a dream Christian riding club/team and it is ""ICHTUS", meaning FISH. I also know someone from Victory Christian Fellowship, randiezbee of San Antonio Village (sir, I hope you can also check this tread and share something ). @ sir ten Tanay is a good place for riding, and retreats... heheh. Maybe we can cook something up... @ everyone ;D How about a riding club for Christians? Does it sound interesting? I know we got plenty of mission work to be done around, di ba? A "salt and light" to the community.... let's come out, be seen and be heared. God has placed a purpose in us while we enjoy biking, why not we share its message, especialy to those who are in need.

As I continue my quest for survival I've been meeting along the roads and trails some people with battle scars, those who are reluctantly sharing their deep struggles in life - be it physical, psychological and emotional. They have different personal opinions on how they attack their situations. And along the course I could hear biking taking some roles in augmenting. Sounds wonderful as a two wheeled mechanism doing a job of a seemingly therapist.
I know there is PinoyMTB to promulgate biking beyond the rolling wheels. It's about brotherhood and life-sharing. I'm really amazed how people get connected to share interests and support in spite of being strangers. Here we are one in the world of endless journey over a two-wheeled mechanism.
May this forum lives on and continue to be an instrument of hope, freedom and fulfillment. God bless you all.
Ride safe with God! Pastor Ernie

Just to log...
Since biking is my only weapon against my terminal illness I strive hard to be consistent and progressive. This is my progress chart:
*I started biking again after I recovered last August 15 with 25kms/ride once or twice a week. *Then I increased the distance to 40kms/ride @ 3X/week. *Soon turned to be daily biking that helped me do 70kms/ride. *Now I still do it daily as much as possible and covering at least 100kms/ride.
Some said I'm desperate... some said I'm crazy... some said I'm strong... but whatever it is I'm just glad God helped me do it, and it really helped me go beyond my due which was on the first week of September. Praise God I'm still alive! I'm a serious biker for life now and I hope I could be an inspiration to those who are down.
To those PinoyMTBikers who relentlessly mentored me, to my new found friends, and to those whom I will meet soon... I can't thank you enough. You too inspire me a lot. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
God bless!

I used biking to control my blood pressure, Mountain biking also makes me happy and forget my problems and regrets in life. Sadness and despair can't catch up with me when I am riding the trails.

As I continue my quest on a survivor's trail I been meeting people along who are relentlessly pedaling their way to their own journeys. Whenever people recognize me and ask me what keeps me going I start to share my battle stories and once they have heard they started sharing their own.
Then I realized that most of them are not into biking just for nothing. Most do it for a noble reason or purpose... some have shared already through this thread, but many have not.
I also meet people who are down and almost out, in need of some inpirations. Then I said to myself: "If only these people will hear the stories of bravery and triumphs over defeat of those who ride with me along the path of survival, they too will find hope... they too will see a light."
So I desire, that we who have conquered, we who are winning in our everyday lives, be a blessing to them through these simple ways... tell your stories and pass on the flame of hope.
To those who have already shared... thank you and God bless.

passion. i think we bike because we have passion for the sport. otherwise, we'd be happy whacking tennisballs or running and thats about it. the other things we get from biking just makes us love biking more. here's my survival perspective.... life on my side of the fence is not at all easy. my work requires me to be onboard 6 days a week, on long hours too. Facing the challenges of work and life, i have a better chance of surviving getting fit from biking. Problems look small when its dealt from a bike-laspag perspective. i tend to see issues more objectively rather than with emotions. biking also gives the ability to look at things in a broader point of view.
at first i was afraid, i was petrified......like that piece of wood in the petroglyphs museum... ;D ;D ;D ;D im sorry the song kept playing in my mind hehehe

Count me in Pastor Ernie. At 58 I mountainbike vigorously with passion so I can slow down the approach of inevitable diseases common to oldies. So far so good. I am one step ahead of any form of ailment common to my peers. The likes of hip fractures, osteoporosis, chronic pain, arthritis, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, high blood, diabetes, sense of hopelessness and defeat, depression, nervousness, etc etc.
But after i've been biking continously dirt trails of up to 200 kms per week the past 2 years, I fell victim to law of averages by endoing and breaking my right collarbone 4 weeks ago. Booh booh moi. I received countless prayers and get well wishes from fellow PinoyMTBikers in this forum. Which strengthened me and boosted my spirit of course. For PinoyMTBikers I am forever indebted and so grateful.
The therapeutic healthy benefit I sought in mtbiking gave the opposite effect of fracturing my clavicle however. Now that I am on 4th week of healing, and I am strong enough to be walking my German Shepherd for half an hour every early morning the past 5 days, there is another kind of malady creeping in and eating me up lately. I am starting to doubt if my collarbone will be calcifying soon? Now that I am improving and shoulder pain is less bothersome, I am starting to get restless to the point I am entertaining doubts if I will ever bike again after this yuletide season. Crazy and trivial as it may sound to most. But to you and from your lips Pastor Ernie, I am asking prayers, assurance and encouragement that after January, I will go out biking with you around UP Oval so you can motivate me to fight more and feel less sorry for myself. I may not be able to keep up with you after the 10 kms mark? But it will be fine by me if I can in as much mount the saddle and bike initially first 100 meters?
Can I PM you for appointment when the time comes for me to spin?
