Patrick, You're right, I never have any idea till the pain became unbearable. My pain threshold is so high that i mistook it for just a normal bruise or bump from a collision or even just normal body fatigue. I cannot lift my 30 kilos boy anymore, have to sit down and a little bit or do some body english. But, lifting a lady after downing 18 double shots of gin tonic and climbing 7 steps of stairs is easy for me ;D ;D ;D Probabaly its the gin ;D ;D ;D Seriously, I didnt know it then. My muscles kinda withered a little bit coz we do alot of long distance. Pumayat na ng tuluyan. ;D ;D

Enzo = idol, you must have built your body then hehe. I am into trials and lower back pain is part of life. At one point i felt pain shooting down my legs...turns out I had sciatica. It took me 6 months just to figure out what was wrong and was even misdiagnosed by a spine doctor. I think it was my L2 pressing on my sciatic nerve. There was a point where I stopped doing trials and the pain became intense. I couldn't bend like when riding jeepneys etc... turns out I had to continue otherwise I would loose flexibility and suffer more. Of course the medication helped a lot. Best solution for me was never lifting anything over 2 kilos and some exercises I had. I guess Im lucky since I was living in constant pain that a little more pain was still ok hehe. I think I was ok after over a year of having it. I had some medication which I took for almost a year for pain. oh those were good times for my trials practice since I didn't deal with the back pain. Now since Im off the juice I live with lower back pains every single day. BTW many people do get slipped disks but dont feel it because the disk slipped in the direction where there arent any nerve to produce pain so dont feel that you are safe from this or biking is bad for you hehe. I would say we have same situation having a constant pain. There is a time I cant even walk and sometimes it goes all the way to my upper back due to body posture. I visited to many doctors, Acupuncture, chiropractor, physical therapist, did MRI , ct scan, Xray, arthritis diagnosis but they cant find any problem. Aside from my third and fourth spinal in my lower back were closer than normal but not enough to cause my back pain. The doctor given me pain medication but never taken them due to the side effect. My suggestion to everyone having back pain and help a lot. Do stomach crunches and back extension exercises to support the lower back. Do lots of flexibility exercise like 'Yoga", deep tissue massage and drink lots of water. Make sure to stretch after bike ride to maintain flexibility plus drink more water to drain those acid build up in the muscles. Bike ride tend to stress the muscle and get tight up. So post bike ride stretch help.

ok here's the update. MRI shows it's not a slipped disc. But the docs are still not sure what's causing the problem. So far though, it doesn't seem to be due to my physical activities. Their latest theories could be either an infection in the joints or inflammation.
anyway, thanks for the well wishes. please do pray for me that things start to look up soon. Thanks

i had a slipped disc last 2003. due to an awkward lifting position. i went to an orthopedic MD and gave me painkillers but the d@mn thing did not work. since i did not know any chiropractors in this side of the country at that time, a friend of my old man said i try reflexology. i did sessions every saturday for 2 months (i guess, i cant really remember) and you know what, the pain went away! ;D

ey guys, thanks for all the warm wishes and prayers, i'm leaving the hospital tom after about a week or so of 'vacation.' as I posted previously, it's a strange condition. Seems a muscle in my gluteus area suddenly got inflammed. As to why it happend, docs aren't sure. I had MRIs, X-rays, blood tests, etc but nothing could explain the cause. I'm thankful that it's not an infectio otherwise I'd still be here for 3 weeks getting antibiotics injected in me, or worse, a complex surgery to take out the puss in my muscle ouch. Still, just want to share a couple of learnings reflecting on my life these past couple of days . . . 1.) You realize who really matters in your life when you're down and out. Family really counts here. They may not be there during your fun times, but when it counts, they're the ones who are there for you. The pain was so much I couldn't even move out of bed! Being taken down from your pedestal really changes your priorities. 2.) Make sure you exercise properly, right technique, right form, right load. Even though they say it's not related to biking, I still suspect this is a combination of increase in biking activity+gym (trying to impress the hot babe on the other threadmill) + stress at work. Your body can only take so much. 3.) Have a Health Plan. One week stay here will cost me around 70-80k if I did not have Philamcare. 4.) Never lose hope. Pray, and ask others to pray for you. In hindsight, it doesn't seem like much. But when that infection scenario was being discussed, and you don't feel you're getting better each day . . . well, . . . . Thank God for being there througout it all. Looking back, maybe He just wants me to slow down and think about my life . . . That's it. Looks like I'd be in crutches for some time, I hope I can get back in the saddle soon yo arnel, there are better stuff than valium paaaaare . . like morphin, opiate, . . .

Thanks for the update Marcs.
Really during our Rides at Irid last week (one that you missed) and Sierra Madre this week, you were always in our thoughts...worrying how you are doing..wishing we will catch latest scoop re your condition.
Now that we know you seem to be handling your trials well and you are on the road to recovery, we can heave a sigh of relief.
Get well soon. We are just at the trails waiting for you to join us.
Take milk. Not skag and opiates...paaaaare.

one tip i can share about this topic:
avoid driving with your wallet still in your rear pockets, especially on long rides. if you could observe, sometimes you can feel numbness on your butt.
try on of this days driving without your wallet inside your pocket ! ! !
be conscious enough not to forget your wallet when goint out of your car.

Wow! This forum has everything! I hurt my back in high school from sports and had to swim for therapy. My back is hurting now, hopefully not from biking. I learned something interesting lately: 1) most back pains are caused by misaligned spines. 2) migraines and feelings of sloppiness are caused by misaligned spines 3) Its easy to get a spine misaligned - from sleeping in the wrong position, to carrying your bike, to reaching your toes when you stretch, to sitting with your legs crossed. 4) most people have misaligned spines and dont know it and dont even have pain - even children. 5) spines need to be regularly aligned for maintenace- just like an oil change 6) alignment is not that expensive - just a massage in most cases I have been checking this site lately: www.dorn-method.com/index_files/DornMethodPhilippines.htmI have a doctor's appointment next week for my back pain and if there is nothing seriously wrong, i might try this spine alignment massage. Have any of you guys tried this dorn method?
