I have a slipped disc since the mid 90's. I didn't mind it because the pain didn't go back like it used to. But I still feel some ill effects during long road rides or very rugged trail rides. Probably a better fitted bike would ease the pain. A full suspension MTB or a full carbon roadie would definitely help but I don't have a budget for it. I just do some stretching after running and swimming. It's stretches my back muscles to make it stronger. I'm no expert so I might go to a chiropractor one of these days to have my back re-examined.

Marcs brad,
welcome to the club of "Slipped Disc MTBikers" notoriously known as Slipped Discs Anonymous . Ive had my slipped disc since 2003 ...herneated disc between L4 and L5 (lumbar area = lower back)
1st thing is: ask a Internal Med doc what the best pain pill he can prescribe..buy alot
2nd:change your doctor if he says you can not bike anymore
3rd: Dont go to a chiropractor...well not yet anyway
4rth: Go to a rehab PT doctor (physiosumthinrist..I ll ask again) . I went to this doctor at Makati med PT rehab center and she came up with a PT program for me . About 12 sessions at Fort Med [composed of traction stretching and light weights] . The pain lessened drastically
5th: Only after you ve done 1-4 should you think of doing the Chiropractic way. It was a rip off for me at P1,200 per session 4x a week . Before I went to the PT rehab center
BTW1: Buy a LP waist and back strap belt with the metal inserts at the lumbar area. this device really helps
BTW2:remove your high thick pillows and fold a blanket to 1.5 inches thickness and put this along your spine...try not to twist around while sleeping
I ll call you when I have the names of the docs
Hang tough, buddy

i wish i could say it was coz of this tough ride down this exotic mountain and stuff . . . but really it was a dumb-ass move at the gym. hurt like crazy last tuesday and i could barely walk. it was like having a perpetual cramp on my left leg. i'm getting the MRI tom and hope it's not slipped disc, although all signs point to it. still there's a chance it's not a slipped disc in the lumbar area.

hang on brad. i forgot what disc is herniated on my back. L1, L2... uhmmm LRT. Anyway, I just rested for a couple of weeks or even a few months. Then back to playing again. By the way, swimming helped a lot strengtening my back and core muscles.
i herniated a disc when i landed on my tail bone during a half court 3 on 3 game. i blacked out for a couple of minutes then ran home when i regained consciousness. i was crying when i got back home because of the pain

Used to transfer sacks of rice to the truck(fill it) twice a day, so that's 4 times for 2 trips. Have to bring it down from the second floor. The others are from motorcycle accidents and basketball. BMX, Skateboard, and this MTBiking and falling from trees stealing guavas and star apple from neighbors. Have you ever landed from a jump or rebound heel first? happened to me thrice. The pain shoot up my spine. Everytime I dance slow drag in a party (Sweet daw ang tawag sa atin nuon) People said I looked like a dog mounting a b@#ch kase naka hukot or my front is too inside. You've slipped your disc and I know how it felt, even just getting out of the bed is hard for me, meron pang technique.

I'd have to congratulate Marcs for not having a slipped disc as this condition is with you your whole life...surgery doesnt really fix it Keep us posted pls, folks! Arnel/brad, Coming from a poor family I worked odd jobs to support my vices. ;D ;D ;D Used to be kargador(Helper) in a rice store. OT: wow ! 50kgs sacks of rice! truly a macho man ! ;D I also came from a humble yet proud "small business/starting family" but unlike your macho job I was stuck with "tough lady chores" like weaving and loosening bails of abaca ropes...Had some macho practice making cartons (cut, build and tape) and carrying max 25kgs boxes into trucks with our employees But I think all these give us muscles and character , d ba brad !? I try to dance hard even with my condition though ;D ;D I look like a stiff fat worm !! ;D

Enzo = idol, you must have built your body then hehe.
I am into trials and lower back pain is part of life. At one point i felt pain shooting down my legs...turns out I had sciatica. It took me 6 months just to figure out what was wrong and was even misdiagnosed by a spine doctor. I think it was my L2 pressing on my sciatic nerve.
There was a point where I stopped doing trials and the pain became intense. I couldn't bend like when riding jeepneys etc... turns out I had to continue otherwise I would loose flexibility and suffer more. Ofcourse the medication helped a lot. Best solution for me was never lifting anything over 2 kilos and some exercises I had. I guess Im lucky since I was living in constant pain that a little more pain was still ok hehe. I think I was ok after over a year of having it.
I had some medication which I took for almost a year for pain. oh those were good times for my trials practice since I didn't deal with the back pain. Now since Im off the juice I live with lower back pains every single day.
BTW many people do get slipped disks but dont feel it because the disk slipped in the direction where there arent any nerve to produce pain so dont feel that you are safe from this or biking is bad for you hehe.
