BoxingWhat are the dangers? Many doctors see boxing as an unacceptably dangerous sport - the British Medical Association (BMA) would certainly like to see it banned. But medical advisers to the sport's controlling bodies say that with the proper precautions, it need not pose too high a risk. While boxing accounts for fewer deaths than many other sports, the BMA says this is insignificant compared to the effects of brain damage that may go unrecorded in many boxers. Cuts and bruises are the most common boxing injuries, and many boxers leave the ring needing stitches to the face and dental work. Body blows can lead to broken ribs and internal bleeding. But, as boxing involves powerful people hitting each other repeatedly, often around the head, there are other risks - most serious of all being permanent severe brain damage. While other injuries repair relatively easily, brain tissue, once damaged, remains damaged. The symptoms of such brain damage - commonly known as being "punch drunk" - include slurred speech, slow reactions and even occasional blackouts. how About GAY BOXING?

hahaha! nice hance. lets hope there still something to hit down there.
anyway, boxing is great as a form of exercise. its great if your trying to get in shape to be able to bike better. you dont have to "box" other people to take up boxing, just train and learn the moves. i have to say from experience, boxing can be a great alternative form of exercise whenever you cant go biking. its one hell of a work out and really addicting.

Facial (jombag sa mukha) vs. Nipple Pinch (Kurot sa Utong) ahahaaayyy!!!But seriously, this kind of blow can produce micro-injuries to the delicate vasculature of the brain. The ones that cannot be seen by CT-Scan and MRI.

Nice pic, beki Boxing! Like other sports boxing has its dark side as well. Boxing and cycling has some things in common specially in our country: 1. Majority of practitioners or followers are from the lower class(Not sure of some PinoyMTBiker members who have those bling bling bikes! ) 2. In order to enjoy the sport or hobby one has to endure the pain in training to increase performance level. Boxing is hard, a good example is that 3minutes in one round feels like an eternity when you are in the ring. ( Just imagine pedalling up the Wall in Maarat under time pressure) But, one can reap the benefits of boxing as an excercise without having to spar and get hit. Boxing is a great way to loose weight and be fit. Aside from the excercise you will be learning a new skill as well, which is self defense(against those who want to steal your ride ) Some benefits: Eye,hand and feet coordination will improve Stamina increase increase in metabolism even while at rest lessen those love handles(bilbil) Combine boxing and cycling and you get a Lean Mean Fighting, Cycling Machine!

Great photo! .. not only because of the fight between the badings. Look at the audience.. their facial expressions and reactions...galing ng catch! Can't stop laughing when I saw this photo. must have been a fierce fight to merit such fear and reflex action from the audience

this is also booming due to the MMA craze... aside from BJJ, Muay-thai etc... Elorde gyms are opening up at metro manila... this is partially important because, knowing how to punch is not a thing you could learn alone, either landing a good punch, avoiding your enemy's punch is the best.

Boxing training is one of my favorite forms of exercise. It ranks up there with mtbing for me. Although I was biking consistently before boxing, it still cant compare to the short bursts of intensity experienced in boxing. This is due to the amount of muscle groups involved which is almost all.
I used to train several years ago and just came back recently. I've been consistently training for the past couple of months. I increased my running to improve my boxing which is always good. Due to this I feel better than ever. Best shape for a long time.
It's really very fulfilling besides the physical gains, there is a lot of improvement as far as ones skill is concerned. So it's a very enjoyable form of exercise.
I'd have to disagree with Brutus regarding the sport being for the lower class. It's quite pricey to do. Sessions can cost from 150-350 Php depending on the gym. Good gloves range from 2,400-9,000 (the most expensive being the Ellsworth of gloves, Winning). The fighters who start from rags hoping to get riches are usually sponsored by big gyms or promoters. That's it's disadvantage over biking, there is a continued cost. You usually spend big once in biking and ride not spending for sometime unless you have upgradetitis.
Besides that, the only minus points for me would be the constantly sore knuckles and wrists but I've gotten used to it. The by-product is a middleweight boxer's physique. I think that's a good trade off. ;D

Majority of practitioners or followers are from the lower class(Not sure of some PinoyMTBiker members who have those bling bling bikes! ) This may not be true... If you could go to Elorde's... you might believe me.... Like marv said...either the equipment for this sport is not cheap... A Thailand made boxing glove cost around 2300...shoes doesn't come cheap either...brain pads, shorts etc...
2. In order to enjoy the sport or hobby one has to endure the pain in training to increase performance level. This is true, if you don't want pain play chess or some other board games...even board game give you a terible head ache sometimes.Boxing is hard, a good example is that 3minutes in one round feels like an eternity when you are in the ring. ( Just imagine pedalling up the Wall in Maarat under time pressure) But, one can reap the benefits of boxing as an excercise without having to spar and get hit. This is once called the game of modern day gladiators, right? were 2 individuals used to square off...before there are even bare nuckled rulings...(try to watch "Undisputed" - Wesley Snipes" version...you could have some boxing trivia from an old man in the movie). Yes we can also benefit from this with or without engaging to sparriings but to maximize and learn even further...I strongly suggest try to spar with a pro trainer...why??? for you to develope what your paying for, I used to do only straights and hooks with my right arm before...but now my left can now also trow some...because a pro trainer saw what I'm doing and he quickly teach me how to correct that awful movement.Boxing is a great way to loose weight and be fit. Aside from the excercise you will be learning a new skill as well, which is self defense(against those who want to steal your ride ) hehehe...I agree with this sir Brutus...Some benefits: Eye,hand and feet coordination will improve Stamina increase increase in metabolism even while at rest lessen those love handles(bilbil) ...this is my problem...because the gym I'm attending is near those carrienderias w/c cook pig-out tasty meals... Combine boxing and cycling and you get a Lean Mean Fighting, Cycling Machine!

I train with wraps and gloves. Not that it's injured, just sore. This is normal if you go all out on the mitts or bag. It doesn't help that I'm a bit heavy for my size. It's only bad when I train 4 or 5 days straight. I couldn't lift weights as heavy after. This is worse for pro boxers training for a fight. I've seen Gerry Penalosa's knuckles while training for a US fight. It was all bruised and battered. Looked much worse when he came back.

I now currently train at Red Corner Gym at Hotel Intercon since it's along the way when I get off from work.
When my schedule doesn't permit me to train at Red Corner, I do it at Gerry Penalosa's Gym in Multinational Village (John st.). Jonathan Penalosa (Gerry's brother) is the resident trainer there. He is a former WBO International Bantamweight champ and he is the trainer and cornerman for their fighters. It's just P150 per session, the cheapest around.
Our resident Queen of the Mountain trains there too. That's her training secret for cardiovascular endurance. Idol talaga! ;D
