Retzel is the runner here, where's Retz?? allegra, Retzel? Runner? That doesn't go hand in hand fattire, are you running the entire 42k marathon? better train because it's not fun as mentioned. also, if you lack train, the injuries will kill you big time (shin splints, runner's knee, plantar fasciitis to name a few) sup, trying lang regarding bare foot running, it's not for everyone. it takes years of running experience, pain and callouses. one must have a very strong arc to absorb all the pressure on every foot strike. about the shoes, wear something comfortable at first. when get a hang of it then start investing on those high tech running shoes. make sure to check the biomechanics of your foot before buying. sayang ang pera. its like biking din, you can start out with a beater bike. then upgrade later. shoes range from expensive to not so expensive but it'll cost you a couple of thousands din. worth na rin than having lingering leg injuries. always remember to train properly then buy a good (not necessarily expensive) pair of footwear, comfortable clothing and lots of patience. nakakabuang tumakbo mag-isa paminsan minsan. most importantly is enjoy the journey. it may be painful and tiring pero it's well worth it. para din biking yan e may semplang din paminsan minsan lalo na sa trail ;D

retz, not the full 42k just 10k sana, we were biking this morning and passed by the routes, looks fun! i'm still fishing for 10k registrations for sale, just this afternoon i was talking to a Singaporean college student, told him to let me know if i can get one no pressures really, i still can make myself useful and take snapshots (and hopefully photos) of the marathon or run colorum

my first attempt at running was done here last Wednesday, Nov 28, 8PM: i'll be posting the length later. i did the run as prep for the Singapore Marathon. i'm lucky that the path is near our place and the surface is even which allows for an uniterrupted walking/jogging/running. i was able to make 3 rounds with some walking done in about an hour and it was exhilarating. so far so good, i finished it intact, felt a high, might be runner's high (i first heard this from whoopi), but there was the morning after. do i have the knees to really do this? morning came, my leg muscles aching in places like never before. the good kind. the pain that means gain. i'm happy. something painful on the left knee joint that got shook off after dealing with some serious stairs in the mrt. shaken and gone. i wasn't able to join the marathon, didn't even went to the event. doesn't matter because i spent the day with my family. and this might be a good day for a proper pair of running shoes. my second attempt to run was done here, Dec 03, 8PM: way better path than the first. this one sits right smack in the park. i had on a pair of mizuno wave aura, the mp3 player was brought this time, Ministry of Sound Annual 2008 dutifully playing. still 3 rounds with some walking, still an hour to do it. and i'm liking it!

Do it slowly first, Owen. I noticed that my knees hurt the next day when I do a faster session. Your testimonial got me excited; I'm running tonight

uhm.. i don't know if this was mentioned i read in a runner's mag.. listen to your feet when you run if you hear your feet thumping that'd be a candidate for knee problems.. and as always listen to your body.. rest if you should.. run if you could hehehe my two cents!

I was supposed to upgrade my generic full suspension frame this christmas but decided to buy a motorised treadmill instead so I can do some running (too much rain these days) So now I get more excercise even when the trail is muddy without leaving the comforts of my home.
I also find my biking stamina and endurance improving thanks to the treadmill. We'll I will have to wait another 12 months for a branded fulls sus(got a new hydraulic brake upgrade naman eh...)
Ride safe brad....

Running is indeed addicting.
As part of physical rehabilitation while my broken clavicle is healing, orthosurgeon recommended that I walk briskly daily for an hour and do stationary bike every other day for 30-45 minutes per session. Not to do any upperbody resistance training. But engage in lower body core cardio training instead.
I will tell you a secret. I haven't exactly been obeying doctor blindly. In addition to walking briskly for an hour, I progressed to a point where mere walking is not enough, I started running slowly for 5 minutes after every 5 minutes of walking, and lately 10 minutes slow running after every 5 minutes of walking...and I stop after 60 minutes of doing this interval.
If I won't impose self discipline, soon I will be running more than I am walking, as opposed to doctor's orders. Running slowly builds up in my regimen. Before I know what is up, I am hooked again to running like I did daily for 20+ years as US Marine.
Running is so much fun too like mtbiking. I remember while active as Marine, reveille is sounded daily 0430, then we do formation runs minimum of 3 miles and up to 6 miles, rain, mud, sleet, snow, and because of this daily regimen, my fighting weight remained steady at 137-140 compared to todays retirement at 165-170. That was some serious weight weenie upgrade (137-140) all because of mandatory Marine Corp formation runs.

Guess what?
Secret. I ran for 60 minutes and walked for 10 minutes early this morning. My doctor does not know. Don't tell him.
I am strong na to be able to run for an hour. Only thing limiting me from biking is I feel that my broken collarbone is still weak and limiting my full range of motion.
I plan to sneak the bike out of the house though next week and give it a spin. My wifey and the maids won't know of course. I will do it very early in the morning when everybody is asleep. Who knows? If I can hang on to the handlebar long enough like for a full minute or so without my broken collarbone hurting, I will keep on spinning round the village and will stop only when it hurts.

Abangan moi Return Of the Comeback. Papi Rocky, Muscle coordination and strength and visibility is a requirement in biking. It be better if you sneak out of the house at least with a PinoyMTBiker partner (or 2 or 20?) in crime, that would lessen our worries. You can always go to the gym instead! There's no rush, Papi! Get well soon, slowly but surely... We have a new rule of NOT going alone?

Yes. gadgets88 is right...sir Arci.
Thanks goodness I was stopped in time from doing something very stupid.. Or else, I would have regretted my crime.
I knew it. I was secretly asking for your permission when I sounded of.
There is safety in numbers indeed. Just like 'no helmet no ride' policy, we have a new rule of Not going alone.
I may have build up stamina and endurance and lower body strength, but upper body muscle coordination and strength and agility and full range of motion and visibility are requirements in biking.
Nope. I promise I won't go out biking until after orthosurgeon gives me permission that I can do so after my next appointment on Jan 8.
Thanks for being there and watching out for your own buddies...PinoyMTBiker.

Remember when we biked at MOA and I was inviting you for a run, and you told me that you used to do running back in the days? So good to know that you're into it again! Oh I got a silver medal for our 3K run here in the office while competing with 500 of our employees last week. Running is fun indeed.

Hard headed indeed! Who isn't? Hehehe When I had a dislocated right shoulder & I am suppose to be in immobilizer for a month, but in two weeks time I removed it, & tried my normal activities. I just couldn't stand being sedentary for a very long time! I relied on how I feel. Not much pain I said to myself. After a month, I went back to the doctor for the scheduled consultation. I told him that I removed the immobilizer already & can already move my arm. The doctor's face got red upon knowing what I did. Lots of sermon from the doc & before I left his office, I asked "when can I do rock climbing?" He got furious of course. Hehehe Right now I have a chronic right shoulder dislocation. The doctor was right, I should have allowed my body to heal properly. My suggestion to you papa rock... allow your body to heal. Guess what? Secret. Just started running this year. I try to run 5k two to three times a week, but lately I've been experiencing pain in my right knee after the run The pain persists till the next day while I do simple things such as walking or going up and down stairs. What might I be doing wrong? A friend mentioned it might be my running shoes, saying that I've already maximized its mileage. I don't want to spend on a new pair and still experience the same pain after. Any ideas? And in case I buy, what brands are good for running? Please help! TIA

hi verticalnewbie (nice handle by the way) your pain "might" be caused by osteoarthiritis among so many things, kasi that's one of my problem before and after having my knee x-rayed, the ortho doctor found out that my previous basketball injury has evolved into osteoarth., it has been discussed here so many times that in running (or any related high-impact activity like basketball, badminton, etc.) the knee bears all the brunt (i.e. impact) of our body weight. i doubt if it's the shoes but i might be wrong. still best to consult with an ortho on a good running shoes, you can check out any shoe shops that offer shoe measurement to get the right shoe fit for you, as advised by marcs before in a post somewhere (did one last fri. at Athlete's Foot-ATC) and just picked myself a 2,500 petot NB running shoes that sure feels comfy and which i intend to buy pag nakuha ko13th month TAKBO NA ULIT ;D

Choose the right shoes for the run you intend, your weight & fitness is also a factor. If you are heavy, get a well cushioned sole. Having chosen the right footwear. Establish your base training (i.e. the pace and distance you can maintain or comfortable with) from that base you can only increase a max of 20% each month. Otherwise you are risking an injury. Knee problem is common among new runners (well except if you are on your teens or early 20s). To help you preserve your knees may I recommend glucosamin & condroitin. The popular brand is arthro. Otherwise if your not into drinking meds or supplements, eat jello. I hope you'll see your happy running days. Just started running this year. Thanks for the replies guys. I'm hoping it's not anything that needs medical attention as Sir Arci pointed out. I've played hard impact sports before (badminton consistently for 10 years) and never encountered any knee problem, just now with runnning I really want to enjoy this sport because it's so hassle free (no need to get a quorum, a court, or any equipment at all) it's just you and the road/oval/track. Ka Verong - thanks for the tip on the supplements to preserve my knees. I'll do some research on it, otherwise I'll take your advice on jello If you guys have any more tips/help for a newbie runner, please post some more. Thanks!
