I have a question!
My GF has a torn meniscus which prevents her from participating in more strenuous sports. She does enjoy cycling and swimming.
Short of surgery to correct the torn meniscus, what kind of PT/rehab can be done for her?

I have a question! My GF has a torn meniscus which prevents her from participating in more strenuous sports. She does enjoy cycling and swimming. Short of surgery to correct the torn meniscus, what kind of PT/rehab can be done for her? Soft tissue injury like torn miniscus is one of the hardest case to solve in Rehabilitation since its located on knee jt-one of the wt bearing jt on our lower extremity, prone to injury and only supported by soft tissue around it.The sad thing is even with the most advance surgery and rehabilitation available right now, you wont be able to get back to the prior condition of your knee.In PT they usually give pain management-superficial and deep heating modalities, therapeutic massage, electro therapy for pain and specific ms. strengthening etc.. which will only give you temporary relief. The most important aspect of pain management is to teach the pt on how to live with it or how to live with the pain. Most of the the time,pt with soft tissue injury will suffer from chronic pain and you can resolve this by activity modification tech.(individualized treatment-depends on pts rom, strength, and functional mobility with regard to pain status.Proper body mechanics/mobility exercise to avoid aggravation of pain and specific muscle exercise to stregthen the muscle around the injured area and muscle that will limit pain.Initially non wt bearing exercise like pool therapy is followed by more aggressive exercise(close chain/open chain ex.)Exercise should be done on pain free range of motion.
