When I was still competing in shooting matches we used yoga style breathing to calm down the nerves and bring the heart rate down Inhale deeply thru the nose, hold for a sec, and exhale slooowly thru the mouth
I was watching the The Contender and saw the cornerman shout out,"breathe, breathe" and Peter M. did the same yoga breathing Same with tito Ortiz sa UFC, wathc him in between rounds
Seems to work best when your hapong hapo (translate that ) La lang hehe

Our lungs is a very important part of our body, so let's take care of it, avoid smoke from cars, tobacco and any form of smoke cause anything you inhale gets to your lungs easily. Once I've recovered I'll try the yoga thing... Sir Allegra could you teach me the secret technique...

My problem kasi is that I make hingal (is "out of breathe" the right term?) during climbs. So is it just me, or di talaga pwede to do this yoga breathing when biking uphill??

I am enlightened Yoga master Allegra, before I inhale and exhale through my nose, making my nostrils expand a lot and my nose hairs are exposed... Thank you

Most people breathe from the mouth/nose and chest, which is inefficient.
I try to practice belly breathing which is basically, breathing from your diaphragm and using as much of your lungs as possible. You'll know you're doing it correctly when your belly expands with each inhale and you can learn to feel/control your diaphragm to some extent.
If you watch top pro cyclists from the side during a time trial where they are pretty much putting out 90% effort the entire time, you can actually see their tummy expand and contract with each breath.
I've used belly breathing to good effect in martial arts, swimming, and running, but I think the best people to teach this technique are those that play wind instruments (sax, trumpet) and singers.

Oops, thanx for pointiong that out Thats what I keep on forgetting, I still keep on breathing using the upper chest ( bad ) Pero, it's the breathing in thru my nose out slowly thru my mouth etc that helps me the most

I've used belly breathing to good effect in martial arts, swimming, and running, but I think the best people to teach this technique are those that play wind instruments (sax, trumpet) and singers. Did you know that some artists that play wind instruments can forever play a tone on their instrument. If you notice KennyG on some of his albums can blurt out a constant tone for a very long duration. There is also this flutist which can do this. They can inhale and exhale at the same time to keep on playing. Although I would surmise that the air volume is only small and not enough to supply oxygen needed during heavy exertions. They say that to increase your lung capacity, you should also exercise your lungs. Everyday for 5 minutes, try inhaling slowly thru your nose then exhaling strongly thru the mouth (keeping in mind to exhale all the air in the lungs as much as possible). Then back to inhaling slowly again. BTW. During long uphills especially those nasty steep ones or during hard exertions, before you start gasping for air, concentrate on your breathing. As in focus your mind so that you inhale and exhale constantly. This will help you to breath properly and also take your mind away from the climbs

How about lung capacity, elders have more air space in their lungs than youths?
Have anyone considered this?

You are probably pushing yourself more than what your capabilities are. try finding a good breathing tempo. relax your grip and upper body.

What I mean is that mature people have fully developed lungs right, and young people have less developed lungs because they are growing up. And the point is people who are old enough has a greater advantage than young people because their lungs could accomodate more oxygen than younger people...
Heck, I'll just ask a physician...;D
Important note: Take care of your lungs, heart, brain, kidney, liver...Take care of your body.

That's called circular breathing. Experts there are the aboriginees of Australia. They play an instrument called a dijeridoo and can sustain a droning sound for as long as they want. Finally, I would not listen to Kenny G. unless I had a loaded gun pointed to my head. ;D

I think It's not that good.. my mouth gets dry Swimmers breathe in thru their mouth instead of their nose, because when the swimmer would use his nose to breathe air in, water might enter his nose and interrupt his swim, so it's only appropriate to breathe thru the mouth rather than the nose...

When I was still competing in shooting matches we used yoga style breathing to calm down the nerves and bring the heart rate down Inhale deeply thru the nose, hold for a sec, and exhale slooowly thru the mouth your body responds to how you breathe--if you breathe quickly, your heart pumps faster. on the other hand, the way you breathe is in response to your body's needs--you breathe faster if your body needs more oxygen. i think to some extent you can control nga the tension in your body if you controlled your breathing, i.e., if you feel panic coming on, tell yourself to breathe slowly and deeply. paano kaya yung skin divers, those who can hold their breath for 2 minutes or more? what's the record ba, 5, 7 minutes? grabe. WOOFERS - why is kenny g's music not real music? i'm ignorant of the technicalities of music, but he sounds pleasing enough to me
