I just want to share my rides. It's not as long nor as hard as some of the rides I see here, but I'm still proud of 'em. I bought my bike 4 weeks ago to shed some weight, (my last bike was back in highschool) and these are my progress so far. My very 1st "long" ride. 18kms in total. I went through 2 towns. I almost gave up here quarter of the way through. I thought about going back home. But I pushed through and made it to the next town. I was very happy. I went home with a big smile on my face. My intended goal was reached. My 2nd weekend ride was basically more of the same route. Slowly building endurance and stamina and hopefully go farther and harder. Be more healthy.

My 3rd ride was setup by a close friend. My Big Roadie Friend. LOL! The target was the next 3rd town. Total travel is 32 kms all in all. Not much pics at this point. This ride beat the heck out of me. My roadie companion was outpacing me, and I exerted more effort just to keep up. I also kinda ruined my new shoes that my wife bought me. I recently installed pedals loaned to me by my roadie friend after he switched to cleats. I cut the soles of my shoes after pedaling hard for extended periods of time. These were the pedals: This is us. Nearly home. With my Big Roadie Friend. That is my progress so far. The wife said I'm noticeably losing some of my gut after just 3-4 weeks of cycling. I see it too as I'm shrinking into my office uniform. Though, I have gained weight based on the scales I went on recently, which is I think is weird. That is all for now. Thanks!

malamang the weight gained are muscles developed during the time. so that should be good news. and about those pedals... get better pedals. and just keep on riding and enjoy!

A lot of fast cars are passing through those highways :S ingat kayo sir Yes sir, from Zambales ako. Nagro-road widening ngayon, kaya yung ibang road shoulder puro buhangin at lupa. Makes for an interesting ride. Hehehe!

nice ride, nice view, nice companion to burn more fat, you need a high heart rate, research on getting 80% of your max heart rate at a longer time. you can also try interval training. don't push it too much though, build your strength first oh and get a bike bell, if you can't wave to fellow cyclists, a "ding-ding" will do

I will keep that in mind. Baka nga bell ang sunod kong purchase. Yung low-profile (not sure) na bell. Basta, yung bell na di mukhang typical bell. LOL!

biking as an exercise: wandering while losing weight

if your vicinity allows for it, aim for heights over distances. force exertion is higher in a shorter period of time compared to flats, unless you really want to wander around. technically you'll burn more when climbing just don't use it as an excuse to eat

I finally did my first legit climb on a bike. I almost gave up! Hahaha! Yesterday afternoon, I went riding. I decided to go to my parents house which is 6 kms away. The highway goes beside a mountain. No problem going to my parents house as the climb is not very steep, but on the way home, that is a different story. My route (My house along Cemetery Street, going down on the map, my parents house) The part with the descend/climb Reaching the house very quickly. The descend was quite a lot of fun as I picked up a lot of speed! At the top of the climb, there is a church. I took a breather here as I felt my heart almost exploding in my chest. LOL! I'm happy to make that climb 99.9% pedaling on my bike. 0.1% is where I had to carry the bike as there was a 3-4 meter deep gap on the shoulder because the road widening was unfinished. I'm scared to take the bike on the middle of the road while climbing. This is the part where I thought of just walking up with the bike, but decided to continue pedaling. 10 out of 10 will do it again! P.S. My favorite picture so far.

It does remove stress after 1 week of frustrations at the office. I did consider removing that bike stand, but it's so practical. I'm kinda attached to it. Hahaha! I am cosidering a lightweight headlight though. The battery pack on mine is quite heavy.

I went riding with my son yesterday afternoon as I always do. We usually just go around the block until the sun goes down. I have seen him playing around on dirt and grass with his trusty steel bmx (especially when we decided to "hubaran" his bike. Basket off, rear rack off, fenders off). So yesterday, I decided to take him to the dirt road that leads to the new basketball court near our house (still in our Barangay). There is a new residential area that's being developed there, and the path made is quite interesting. There is a small dirt step with a foot/foot-and-a-half drop that can be rolled down on a bike. I wanted to see if he is interested in playing on it. Suffice to say, he enjoyed it. Please excuse the lack of safety equipment though. I'm already working on that. We now have our own micro dirt track/trail Here's mine:

So today, I decided to try a new route. It is a short route, but with varying elevations. Reaching the fork in the road. My route is the road on the far right of the picture. I wanted to take pictures near the shipyard, but it is not allowed. I am not even allowed to take pictures on the perimeter, so this will have to do. Halfway. Subic Town was mainly a fishing village (Fresh and Salt Water) before it was developed. Here are what's left of the "old ways". This picture is overlooking the Subic Bay. I found a small dirt path on the right, just after this bridge. It turns out, it leads to the Coast Guard Office. You can see the shipyard here. More of the Subic Bay. Arrived at my parent's house. I took off after having coffee. I took my usual route to the Grotto. After arriving there (and after catching my breath), I decided to climb the stairs to the church. Not an easy task when you're carrying a bike. LOL! I went home after this. Thank you for viewing!

A little update:
I felt a little wiggle on my rear wheel as I was doing cleaning and maintenance of the bike. I removed the rear wheel and it turns out that the inner nut (the brake side) was a bit loose. I tightened it and all was good.
I was about to put the wheel back when I noticed that the axle was not spinning straight. I may have a bent axle. Bad luck I guess. I'll need to bring it to a legit bike mech just to be sure.
I want to replace the rear axle with a quick release unit just in case the axle is indeed bent. As far as my research go, I need a matching axle and skewer. The question is, how much does a decent QR axle go for? A decent skewer?
TIA!

THIS. This is a direct result of looking after your own fvckin' bike. This is what it means by 'you get to know your bike more'. Well done pare! Pag dinala mo sa LBS panoorin mo at magtanong ka habang inaayos. Tanong mo ang bakit at paano. Para next time alam mo na on your own. Or at least you gain knowledge.

It depends on the brand of hub, some brands have replacement hubs while those that come with some built bike have no replacement. You can tinker with it provided you have other parts or replace it with an entry level non series shimano hub that is pretty much kinda built to last provided you use it properly. If you can tinker your way out of it then good for you. I'd do that before consulting a knowledgeable bike mech

I finally got to join my uncle's group (my mother's cousin, I call him "tito") After a few invites, they finally have a route that I think I can ride. It's the route that I take when I go to work. Majority of it are straight roads, but the killer here is the mountain pass (or zigzag). It has varying climbs and descents that I'm sure will challenge me. Here's my share. The route. The meetup just this morning, 5:00am. 1st stopover in Subic Bay Freeport. 2nd stopover. This is an access road where very few vehicles go through. It's overlooking the Subic Bay and the Pier, and is in front of the (unused) Subic Bay Airport. A lot of bikers come here to practice as the road very much looks like a circuit. Speaking of circuit, the old Subic Race Circuit is located near here. 3rd stopover. The pier where people go to cross the Subic Bay. Barges go across the bay and into the shipyards on the opposite side of the water. Breakfast! But before that, one must work hard. The road going here is a climb. Not very steep, but it's very long. It took all I had just to climb. BTW, a lot of bats live along this route, and disturbing their sleep will have a hefty fine. There's not much after this as we all went home, but I got this sticker though! Things I learned from this ride: 1. I am the youngest rider in this group, but I was the weakest. I had trouble keeping up with their steady pace, especially on the climbs and on the ride home. Good thing, my uncle was there to assist. 2. Conserve your energy. Don't go out of the gate going balls out. I stopped over my parent's house before going home. There, I tried to recover my strength. I didn't even attempt to climb the grotto that you see me posting above. I just got out of the bike and walked to the top. I am extremely humbled by this ride, and 10/10 would join them again. I had lot's of fun! Thanks for viewing!

I've been away from my bike for 1 and a half weeks. I had the worst asthma attack of my life last Friday (Jan. 26) I saw it coming (allergy attack 2 days prior), but I had no idea it will be this bad. I had to consciously breath just so I can pump oxygen in me. Literal na tigok ako kapag nakalimutan kong huminga. I'm all recovered now and slowly going back to riding. I missed my bike. Hinay-hinay lang muna dahil may konting ubo pa ako. It's the first time in my life where I'll have to take meds for "maintenance". Biking without a face mask of some sort is a no-no now. I'm just happy to be riding again.

Consider buying a bike stand so you can conveniently stow your bike at the back of your SUV (basing it from the picture above) without removing the rear wheel. 😊

I was supposed to join a motorcycle breakfast ride yesterday, but due to budgetary constraints this was not meant to be. Luckily, my uncle invited me to ride with them. This was yesterday;s ride. It was a 36km ride one way to a member's province near a beach. Me, waiting. They're an hour late. Pfft! Usapan, 6 sila aalis sa bayan eh! LOL! 1st stop over photo ops. One of the members gave out doughnuts! Yum! 2nd stop over in San Felipe, Zambales Market. Some of the guys went in the market to buy our lunch for later. The market was opposite this church, so... Almost there. Stopped over to cut some banana leave for the boodle fight. We arrived. That was approx. a 2 hour ride. Boodle fight!! We have rice, fresh bangus, squid that was caught in the morning, bagnet, radish ensalada, roasted eggplant, sea weed. I fogot the rest. I have a picture of during and the aftermath of this boodle fight, but I will not be posting it. It's a mess. LOL! Around 11-12 noon or so, we left the place. We stopped over half-way to get halo-halo because the day is getting hotter. I have a new favorite picture of my bike. The good: - I was fairly keeping up with the pace of the group on the way to the destination. I was quite happy with this achievement. - I got to know the members more during this group ride. - The food was great! - The scenery was great! The bad: - Mostly, going home. The heat was bad. Good thing, there were patches of clouds. - I experienced sharp pain in my right knee. It kept me from pedaling hard. I was falling behind for the most part. Good thing, one member rode along with me. - I had the worst cramp of my life arriving home. I can't put into words what I felt. So that was my experience. All in all, I had fun despite the experience of going home. I will have to do something with that pain, so if anyone has any idea on what I did wrong or how to prevent it, please feel free to pitch in. I feel no pain or soreness now, if that helps. Thanks for viewing!

Nice ride! 👍
Cramp is an early sign of dehydration. Time to learn how to hydrate effectively during a long ride.

Ever since The Wife saw results of my biking (I already lost 10 lbs. since November! ) She's been hinting at me that she wants a bike too. Well, last Saturday, I bought her one. I bought her a Trinx Majestic M136. It's a 7-speed, 26-incher, HT. As soon as we got it home, we (well, I) immediately assembled it and adjusted the cockpit to her liking. Earlier this afternoon, I decided to take it out for a spin, and this is what I found. The thing is very light and nimble. LOL! I tried doing climbs on it and found that it's harder to pedal than may 29er - or rather, I put in more effort to make it climb. I don't know if it's the gear ratios, the lower seat (I didn't adjust the seat), or the wheels, but I just had to put in more effort. It's a fun bike though! The picture of the bike: I'm quite happy with the bike, and The Wife is very much happy to have it. One question though, The Wife wants a more upright position. She's complaining of the weight going into her hands. Will a shorter stem relieve some of that weight? She wants me to lower the seat, but I told her that pedaling efficiency will suffer. Right now, I think the bike is on an 80 stem. Thanks!

Ngayon ko lang ito nabasa. LOL! Consider buying a bike stand so you can conveniently stow your bike at the back of your SUV (basing it from the picture above) without removing the rear wheel. 😊 It's a small wagon. If you know the Toyota bB, we have the 2nd gen bB. Hinihiram ko lang actually ito sa father ko. Wala akong tsikot na sarili. But I am considering on buying one (rack). Any recommendations for a hatchback? play with your gear and learn to maintain cadence so you don't run out of steam even on long climbs. you can also do interval training. Will do. I often run out of steam, lalo na kapag pauwi na.
