if you can afford it, go for ultegra! you'll regret not doing it if you get 105 otherwise, you can miz & match the parts. there's only a small weight & cosmetic difference between some parts. the important parts worthwhile upgrading to ultegra are the cranks, cassette & rear derailleur. otherwise, everything is practically the same. it might be cheaper to get the whole gruppo all at once though.

I've had both 105 and Dura-ace. The biggest difference for me is in the feel of the brifters. DA is a lot better, and you can make fine adjustments with the levers that you can't do with 105.
If you can't afford full Ultegra, get Dura-ace brifters and 105 everything else.

If you can still wait a month longer, go for Ultegra. Shifting is much crisper and smoother than 105.

just would like to add my vote to ultegra. I upgraded from a 9 spd 105 to a 10 spd ultegra, Shifting is crisper and crank is stiffer than the 105's. So for the additional 5-6 k i'd definitely recommend the ultegra

like you said you are into racing. just go for ultegra. few more months of waiting wont hurt that much. better still mix it with Dura-ace parts like RD and brifter.

KJ mode: I'd like to ask what wheelset are you planning to get? Kasi a good set of wheels will make a lot more difference than the "crisper" shifting of ultegra I have the ultegra 10 , and I've tried the 105 and tiagra , di naman ako bumilis hehehe kj mode off

i also intend to use the bike for racing. Most races near/around Manila are short criteriums, which are great for spectators because of the number of crashes. Race only what you can afford to replace when you crash in a crit.

Wheelset I havent personally tried this and even f I have I'm probably too dense to notice the diff- a friend who races sa executive races suggests ultegra hubs and mavic open pro rims na magandang wheelset

spend your budget on acquiring the lightest wheels , cassette ,pedalsand cranks (shoes too ) that you can afford . These are the items in the bike that you have to keep moving and any weight savings here will make a difference in the long run . go with at least 105 shifters ,rear deraileur since ten speed is going to be the norm and nine will eventually fade away .

go with at least 105 shifters ,rear deraileur since ten speed is going to be the norm and nine will eventually fade away . Maybe in the US, but in the Philippines most roadies are still on 9 and even 8-speed. Look around. You can still find 8-speed ultegra and DA components in Cartimar. I don't think 9-speed road parts will be hard to find at all, at least for a couple of years. Still, if you're buying a new grouppo you might as well get the latest 10-sp brifters/cassette.

hmm... lets put it this way... quality plus durability. which one? that would be my deciding factor. hehehe because even if ultegra has crispier shifting but more maintenance, i'd get the 105 instead, and vice versa.
