Hi, I was curious what is the maximum rider weight for mountain bikes? I have a friend who I want to encourage to bike, to join me in my biking, and for him to lose some weight. He is around 260-280 LBS and 6 ft 3 inches tall. I don't want to risk the bike breaking and injuring him when my original intention was to make him healthier.
Thank you very much for all your inputs.

Oooh...you might want to get something burly. although most bikes can handle at least 220lbs easy, i'm not sure any weight beyond that. He'll need a large frame though, which is most likely a branded bike. very few entry level bikes, if at all, make large frames.

Thank you very much for all your inputs. big guy. i suggest going through foreign boards since those guys are bigger and heavier than us on the average thing is, frame manufacturers don't really post weight limits of their products. some components do post their rider weight limit - mostly carbon where he needs to get a good build at is at the wheelset - proper tension needs to be set on all spokes.

Kaya yan ng mtb pero tama nga sa height nya medyo mahirap humanap ng ng malaking frame siguro unless mga brands like merida, giant etc.

I was thinking of letting him ride a comfortable bike first like a bmx and not go full saddle up (XC bike). Why? if he's just starting out, it would be better if he gets a feel of riding a bike, being able to explore and do stuff with a bike. if he levels up, then let him ride an MTB i think this goes against Anthrax ideals' but this is just my opinion

Haha, I actually like the idea. Learn and feel on the bmx then transition to MTB.

I agree. Since I'm REALLY small, I learned biking using my dad's BMX, which I used until highschool. It took some adjustments since malaki yung mtb, but it was an easy transition.
