My estimate from Olivares Stadium to Amari is 57 kms (based on sign boards in Agunaldo Hi-way) so if its a back and forth it would be 114 kms happy ridin guys A hundred km on a roadbike feels like 50km on an mtb Oh no idea sir I just saw this big sign in Tagaytay where it says "MANILA 57 kms" dont know in cyclometers. Oh by the way good sirs if your planning to pedal all the way to Tagaytay I think roadies used the Cavite Route.

sta rosa to tagaytay is pretty short though. instead of stopping in tagaytay, you can go all the way down to batulao and then back to sta rosa.

Hi Guys, Just completed rebuilding my brother's old road bike for me to try road biking. Didn't want to spend that much yet in buying/assembling a road bike so I just borrowed my brother's dust-collecting/rust-collecting road bike frame/parts. Total cash-out for the moment is 3k for small parts and assembly fee. My longest ride so far after completing said bike 3 weeks ago was yesterday, from my place at Taytay, Rizal to UP Diliman via Felix Ave, Marcos Highway, C5. Some pictures : Parts: Frame: Pasadya from Joven (according to my brad made from tange or reynolds steel tube) STI : Shimano RX-100 8-speed FD: Shimnao RX-100 RD: Shimano RSX Crank: Shimano FC-1070? 52T/39T Stem: Shimano 600 Headset: Shimano 600 Handlebar: Generic Rear Hub: Campagnolo Sealed-type 7-speed screw type Front Hub: Campagnolo Sealed-type Break Caliper: Campagnolo Rims: Araya 27X1, Double wall Seat Post: Generic Tires: Topstar 27X1 Tubes: IRC 27X1 Saddle: Active

that's pretty mucg the stuff i had on my road bike before i converted it to SS. by the way, are you using a seven speed campy cassette w/ 8 speed shimano sti? does it work? sound like you might be having some mis-shifts there. my first upgrade would be a a shimano 8speed casstte to make sure it shifts properly. you'll also need a new shimano compatible hub or wheelset. you can get shimano r500 or 550 for around P5-6k. you can also later try finding a 1" carbon fork and changing your stem & headset, or try finging a threaded carbon fork. or changing the bar to a newer ergonomic one from Turbo Lite. the wheelset & fork will drop the weight considerably. my geared road bike (also with a lugged chromo frame) weighed around 20lbs.

Thanks king. I'm using Sachs 7-speed sprocket (13T-24T) kinda heavy rin. As for the sti, always double click on first shift then the rest will be single click. As for the upgrade, the bar is on my list and that's about it for now. losiphile.

Your first upgrade should be clipless pedals. Woofers, Yup, you're right. Clipless pedals and shoes is on top of my upgrade list, followed by an ergonomic handle bar and lightweight 7-speed sprocket that is cheap. Thinking of getting a shimano 7-speed sprocket with 13T-28T cogs but having doubts about it. Thanks. losiphile

nice looking bike you have Michelle, what a beauty! I like the blue accents (tape, rims and bottle cage)... even matches the sticker on the frame. Nice tape job btw... I just rewrapped my handlebars on the SS road bike and it doesn't look nearly that nice.
King knows his road gearing! 11-21 is a criterium racing cogset and not made for climbing (unless you're super stong). My first road bike came with a similar cluster and I changed it for a 13-26.
King - do you know if Ultegra 9sp clusters are individual cogs? my old 8sp Dura-ace was and I was able to swap a few cogs out and customize my cluster.
Is that a compact crankset? If you still feel climbing is difficult after getting a 26 cog in the back, try a compact crankset (different bolt pattern). Has rings with 50/34 vs 53/39. I use a compact crankset on the geared roadie so that I can ride the steepest hills without a triple.
mtb pedals on the bike is a good idea when you're starting out on a new roadbike. At least you'll be familiar with the pedals and they are two-sided. Many road pedals are not two-sided and more difficult to step in. You probably won't ever need road pedals, unless you're doing a lot of hardcore sprinting and racing.
Just my 2cents.
Owen knows... get lots of saddle time in. Hopefully on traffic free roads.

Michelle, any good deals you encountered? How much did you get your saddle? Or did it come from Mat's old bike? The saddle came from Mat's road bike. It's only the frame that's new, and it was the only one that Mat found in size small (43cm).

Hey Bo, your eyes are too sharp! You even noticed the bottlecage was blue and the small bit of blue sticker on the frame. I have Mat to thank for the nice tape job, it took him three tries to get it just the way he wanted it. Yup, 11-21 is heavy for me. Unfortunately, it doesn't come in individual cogs, they come in pairs, so it would be better if I just change the whole cogset for a 13-26. The crank set is the standard 53/39. I'll have to try it first on climbs before I decide if I need to change it to a compact crankset. Right now I will just have to imagine the ease and lightness of pedalling with a 13-26 and a compact crankset. It's funny but I always get bikes with heavy gearing, even my MTB (bought second hand), cogs are 11-32 and the crankset is 48-36-26. Yup, using MTB pedals is ok I guess, plus I don't need to buy road shoes anymore. Thanks for the tips Bo, I'll try to get as much saddle time as I can so I'll get used to it and as Owen said -be one with the bike.

michelle, change your cassette instead of the cranks, it's cheaper. i think the ultegra cassette is around P2.5k? you can get a 12-27. even with a compact crank (50-34), 11-21 is stil pretty heavy. that's a pro cyclist gearing already. you might be able to find a cyclocross crank (48-34). i think a saw a Ritchey one in Quiapo once. so matt now has his singlespeed road bike as well?
