For an entry level mtb, which is better mechanical or hydraulic brake? What are the pros and cons? Tia.

shimano's cheapest hydraulic is just P1500 retail so there's really no significant price difference compared to mechanical
so just get hydraulic and enjoy the benefits

+1 sa hydraulic brakes
A: mechanical disc brake pros: cheap, strong braking power vs v-brake. cons: frequent adjusting of pads is needed to maintain braking power, heavy. Needs more finger force when braking vs hydraulic
B: hydraulic disc brake pros: it adjusts pads automatically, strong braking power vs mechanical disc brake. Less effort when braking, you can use the index finger only. cons: cost more than mechanical(depends on the brand) and also the maintenance(cutting hose, bleeding etc)

you will appreciate the hydraulic brakes on long rides. as ramonc2 mentioned, less effort when braking.

can't go wrong with hydraulic never been happy to never adjust the pads and dealing with the brake cable snapping though like ramonc2 said, the maintenance hurts but not as frequent unlike for mechanical.

thanks to the influx and spread of technology, today you can buy entry level shimano hydrualic disc brakes almost 1/4 of the price of entry level shimano mechanical disc brakes seven years ago... enjoy! currahee!

I knew someone who almost had an accident because his hydraulic brakes malfunctioned. It was during a downhill part of a trail and for unidentified reasons the fluid in his front hydraulic brake got drained. I was thinking it was a leak. As for maintenance, I'd choose mechanical

if running at 40kph and below, and the brakes malfunctioned, kaya pa kaya ng "tsinelas brake"?

Is it ok to use mechanical break and hydraulic break together? Like, Mech. Break in front, Hydro brake for rear.

I would opt for hydraulics brakes... BUT it depends lalo na kung entry level ang usapan.. I used to have an entry level hydraulic brakes (AVID) but it gave me more headaches than my previous mechanical brakes, oil leaks here and there ...so choose wisely hehehe

Hydraulics for me.... the benefit outweighs the cost, esp. if you're riding trails. 1 finger braking, modulation / controlled braking, you cant get this from a mechanical brakes, unless you got pretty strong fringersπππππ

It's 2017 and Im still using my good ol 2004 model AVID BB7 mech brakes, maintenance ko lang is on the brake pads, it saves me a lot of money since 2004. At maganda ang itsura nya sa bike kaya di ko sya mapalitan-palitan. Ok din ang stopping power nya. Gaya nga ng sabi ni jrocket strong fingers are needed. You'll get use to it eventually. Just ride always.
