good day! we recently refurbished our mountain/race bike and has started planning to bike to work because I've honestly grown tired of the traffic and unpredictability of traffic and I believe I can kick back to being fit again through this. I've been asking around and researching alot about how to go about things, but I'm pretty sure I missed a few more good tips or warnings from you guys since you are the seasoned riders -do you guys know the best route to commute from marikina area (malanday/marikina palengke area)? -and are there good parking spots particularly near PSC/tektite towers? (I read that there's a parking area for bikes in megamall but if it's possible, I don't want to leave my bike THAT far from office) -also if you guys have tips and warnings and additional info you think I should know, feel free to tell me I'm honestly excited about this

sister? just guessing based on your profile.
anyway, not too familiar with marikina/pasig area but i did plot your points using google maps and it's interesting, you have 3 ways to get there.
(https://www.google.com.ph/maps/dir/Malanday,+Marikina,+Metro+Manila/Tektite+Tower,+Pasig,+NCR/@14.5903953,121.0579814,14.67z/data=!4m13!4m12!1m5!1m1!1s0x3397b9c4fc29425f:0xa051b4b3394e2aa!2m2!1d121.0943958!2d14.647586!1m5!1m1!1s0x3397c8140e4b9e87:0x56f5845106ed1761!2m2!1d121.061566!2d14.582519)
I would choose the first route, via Katipunan and Temple drive. You'll have a fair share of climbs and downhill runs on your route which is good for the cardio.
regarding parking, ask the security guard or your building admin. they might be able to help find you a spot or if you're lucky (like me), our admin designated one car slot to be used exclusively by 2 wheeled vehicles. motorcycles and bicycles share the parking slot. if there's no parking near you, then no choice, better leave it at the mall, at least it's covered (i hope).
tips...do your route on a weekend, try it out for 2-3 times before committing to a weekday ride. learn to fix a flat in 10 minutes or less on a dimly lighted place. make sure your bike is not flashy, it attracts thieves. always be visible, especially at night.

I'll specially try the route, I must admit I'm a bit wary of jeepneys and motorcyclists (specially because motorcyclists hog the bike lane and act like they own the bike lane)

he he cool yeah, getting into the zone while bike commuting takes practice. Here's what you can do, practice bike commuting to anywhere on a weekend or a holiday. try to go further and further until you can relax on your route. oh, another tip, have at least 3 routes at your disposal at any given time. one for good weather, one for bad weather, one for limited lighting. normally i reserve a few more routes for flooded night riding or hot weather riding. you can also try your route on a weekend and find alternative routes that has less vehicles. inhaling vehicle fumes while you're on high cardio is pretty much like smoking. i'm a bit familiar with a part of your route as i've used it countless times going to and from technohub to tiendesitas. that part in white plains can be full of vehicles during rush hour. learn to ride on the sidewalk if necessary.

hi xtnz, very familiar ako sa route na yan, what do you want to know?
if you're asking kung okay for commuters, my answer is yes. pero may pitfall yan, sa white plains. Either maluwag or sobrang traffic. kapag maluwag, get ready to hammer, kapag heavy traffic, masanay ka na umakyat baba ng bangketa.

ahh, bike to work din po kasi ako, marikina to ortigas, usual route ko ay amang rodriguez-rosario-ortigas, sobrang traffic kasi sa umaga, naghahanap sana ako ng ibang route, natry ko na yung riverbanks-libis-julia vargas. traffic din kaya dun kapag mga 6-7am?

I would expect traffic din dun. kasi parang backdoor yun going to Ortigas. IMO mas dehins polluted kasi salubungan na lane lang ang White Plains tapos mapuno at maraming nagtitinda ng halaman. Once lampasan mo naman yung White Plains, maluwag na ulit hanggang Ortigas Ave.

Hello Biker Friends! I am a new member here, and reading from the threads I am planning to bike to work na din because of the traffic nowadays (will get even worse due to xmas rush). Anyway, I live in San Mateo/Montalban, ~20kms from my home to Ortigas Center (Emerald St.) I drive to get to work everyday and taken its toll on me (sore back and knees, plus not able to squeeze any exercise at all (overweight na :/). Can you share some inputs if you are on the same plight with me. Here's what I planned so far to solve basic issues in biking to work: 1. My office doesn't have any shower room, so my plan is to get a membership (1,500/yr.) in Elorde Boxing (CW Home Depot) and avail of their shower for 100php. But its free when you workout (just pay 200php for members - boxing session). --Maybe you have other options na cheaper (I considered this because so far , Elorde is the cheapest in terms annual membership fee compared to other gyms nearby, su-sulitin ko na lang yung bayad and do work outs na rin, pero mukhang malabo kasi may cardio exercise ka na sa biking e. We'll see..) 2. Also, our bldg doesn't have parking space for bikes, so I am looking at a parking space nearby with atleast motorcycle parking and park my bike there (bahala na!) parking for motorcycles is 20php (baka same din yun kapag bike) will have to check pa for other rates. -- need your expert advise on this 3. Will bike to work at least thrice or twice a week. --What day will you advise to pedal to work? Maraming salamat po sa sasagot. More power bike peeps!

We'll see..) A: Check mo muna how perspired you'll get, the weather is getting colder. Be more concerned if you're wet with rain, he he. Anyway, longest commute ko is about 10km one way. Also, our bldg doesn't have parking space for bikes, so I am looking at a parking space nearby with atleast motorcycle parking and park my bike there (bahala na!) parking for motorcycles is 20php (baka same din yun kapag bike) will have to check pa for other rates. -- need your expert advise on this A: First you can ask the security guards kung saan pwede, they'll be your best friend to finding a good spot. Kung wala, talk to your office admin or building admin. Kapag wala talaga, dun ka na sa motorcycle parking, just make sure it's covered. Hassle ang basang saddle kapag pumapadyak.3. Will bike to work at least thrice or twice a week. --What day will you advise to pedal to work? A: He he he, this is actually you call. Yung isang mod dito, plankton_dash, San Mateo to Makati yan araw araw (Bingo rider). I forgot kung anong araw kung Monday or Friday, dala na niya yung kapalit na damit for the week, tapos isa isa niyang inuuwi araw araw. Do your first ride on a weekend, recon ride na yun for the route. If I can bike commute everyday, I do.Some additional tips: Prepare at least 3 routes 1) everyday route 2) bad weather/flooded route 3) pasyal route learn to fix a flat in under 10 mins. tipong kalas gulong, hanap ang puncture in case may nakabaon pa. tanggal ang nakabaon, install ng bagong inner tube, inflate, assemble, takbo. oh and practice on a dimly lighted place dahil dehins sa lahat ng pagkakataon eh maliwanag kung saan pwedeng ma-flat.

Thank you for the quick response Sir! oo nga it takes a lot of practice to master this discipline (cycling). Definitely will try to hop on a bike before the year ends PS: Need your expert inputs on this matter, Folding bikes vs regular mtb's (26s, 650b and 29s)?? -- One way kasi na makaka sigurado ka na safe and bike if madadala ko sa office ung bike (folded under the desk). A while a go during my lunch break, I scouted bike parking, ung sa Strata 1000 meron doon, free lang daw sya pero park at your own risk kasi walang bantay (guards) and marami na daw nawala ang bikes. Again, salamat po!

Aaah regarding folding bikes, tanong mo rin ang building admin at office nyo. May offices na ayaw magpapasok ng bike sa loob ng office kahit folding, meron naman na okey lang.
Here's my take, get a beater bike which you'll use for commuting. In my case ito yung bike na entry level ang components, drab ang kulay at dehins catchy kapag tiningnan. My current commuter bike eh dark brown/gray ang color so dehins tawag pansin.

and I'm baaack!
I've tried biking for two weeks, and have considered the tips sir admin has given me aaaand. WHEW BIKING TO WORK IS SUPER FUN its refreshing to whiz thru traffic while all the cars are stuck on road honking non-stop at each other, knowing i could have been one of the them had i stuck to just riding shuttle to work. granted I've encountered my fair share of mishaps (pedal broke off, and chain broke off just awhile ago, but both because of the incompetency of the guy who refurbished my bike), and all the weird looks i get from all the male veteran bikers who pass by me (probably because i pedal so slow, or i look weird idk), I'll continue doing this. it's way more exhilirating plus the workout is good ahh, bike to work din po kasi ako, marikina to ortigas, usual route ko ay amang rodriguez-rosario-ortigas, sobrang traffic kasi sa umaga, naghahanap sana ako ng ibang route, natry ko na yung riverbanks-libis-julia vargas. traffic din kaya dun kapag mga 6-7am? ^ah yan usual route ko, traffic sya 6am palang, pero ok lang, sampa ka nalang sa sidewalk if nangigitgit mga motor. I find motorcycles more troublesome that cars coz often times they just whiz past you without even honking, and hog the bicycle lane, and furiously honk at you when you're in front of them on the bike lane (jesus, these people. its a BIcycle lane, not a MOTORcycle lane :v) ung bandang pa-C5 yung medjo hassel lang kasi hahanap ka talaga ng masisingitan yung amang rodriguez-rosario route di ko pa nattry, mind showing where on the map is this? also I havent tried the whiteplains route pauwi from ortigas. for some odd reason i always get lost, then i just revert back to following the UVxpress shuttles back to eastwood haha

Good to hear sis Ortigas to White plains...let's see....I gave that route somewhere a few posts up. The thing with White Plains route is you end up either in Bonny Serrano/Katipunan or Temple Drive. Although I'm comfortable using C5, I'd rather stay away from it as much as I can, he he.

I'm starting to want to stay away from c5 too. haha. it's the most direct though, if i'm not mistaken? haha ano po bang route yung madalas nyong gamitin? From Tiendesitas or Ortigas, I go to Green Meadows Ave. At dahil bike, left turn ako ng Temple Drive, counterflow na lang kasi one way yun until you get to Giraffe st. Anyway, diretso lang ng Temple drive, medyo may kahabaan ang ahon nyan, prepare to spin. Once you get to the Church of the Latter Day Saints, magiging Katipunan na. From there diretso pa rin hanggang intersection ng Bonny Serrano. Option mo if you want to go to FVR road or diretso ka lang ng Katipunan, medyo matulin ang mga sasakyan dito pero as long as nasa right side ka, you're pretty safe. Then pagdating ng Aurora blvd, pwede ka kumanan ng A. Bonifacio. Ako kasi diretso pa in the direction of UP.

Ortigas to Makati is a breeze, here are some my routes. 1) Tiis tiis sa tunnel. Shaw -> Pioneer (via tunnel) -> Boni -> Barangka -> Estrella-Pantaleon Bridge -> (Rockwell Drive) -> Kalayaan -> Buendia 2) Ayoko sa tunnel, madilim. Gusto ko ng downhill eh. Shaw -> F. Martinez -> boni circle -> San Francisco -> Coronado -> Makati-Mandaluyong Bridge -> Makati Ave -> Buendia 3) Fast and the Furious Ortigas -> C5 -> Kalayaan -> Kalayaan Flyover -> Buendia

whew! ang lalakas ng baga n'yo! 😊
can't imagine myself pedaling in the metro, with all the air pollution.
edit: dust and smoke are my best enemies! for sure in a few km ride, runny nose and allergic rhinitis agad ang price.😔

xmayor, normally i don't ride in heavy traffic, para na rin akong nanigarilyo. btw, i'm not a smoker. i do try to find routes with less vehicular traffic even if it's a longer route. on the flipside that i have no choice but to ride in traffic and dust i have a motorcycle mask which is difficult to breathe in. this forces me to be on a relaxed pace than a full on high intensity ride.

the office I'm currently working has every amenities biker could want: huge parking lot, shower area, locker rooms, etc. yes, there are bunch who go to work on bike pero they are out numbered by those who ride motorcycle/scooters. 🤒
and me? still by car, hahaha! it's not that i'm lazy (or because i don't have a bike... yet) but I need the car with me in the office for the usual out of the office meetings.
another reason why I'm now working on my bike is that we're planning of putting up a bike trail inside the office compound. sounds good?! 😉
