New Gear Special! 2006 Fox Forks and Shocks
Original story
Coil 36 forks, air DH shocks, clickier shocks, better feeling ProPedal and a Terra Logic fork that actually feels great... All this and more inside...
Hmm... where to start. It seems that everything the delightful Elayna from Fox told us about their 2005-2006 range was newsworthy. So here in no particular order, we give you:
Introducing the 'Van 36' - probably an obvious step, given Fox's Float and Vanilla 32mm forks - but a welcome one for downhillers and 'all mountain' riders who like the feel or the perceived extra reassurance of a big coil spring. They'll also be pleased to hear that they won't need to find a brown bike to match the forks as the new 'Van 36 RC2' forks, to give them their full name, come in freeride friendly black. Weight is a claimed 5.45lb/2.47kg
Float X - 'Trail Tune' - The new Float X fork features a new version of the Terralogic system. It still uses a brass weight, but rather than being fully locked out or fully open, there's an amount of free-bleed built into it (anyone with an '05 S-Works Enduro will be familiar with the feel from their rear shock that had a similar tuning). Anyway, this allows the forks to move a little while riding, still opening up fully when they hit a bump, but it means that the forks can be preloaded for jumps and are less likely to suddenly jar you unexpectedly. From a quick bounce around they feel like the kind of fork that most riders will like - rather than the love it/hate it Terralogic system. They're still air sprung and travel is 130mm in keeping with the other Float and Vanilla 32mm forks. Weight is 3.83lb/1.74kg
DHX Air rear shock - This boasts the same features as the DHX coil-over shock, but lighter and with a user serviceable air sleeve. It also has a 15 click ProPedal adjuster - incidentally, the ProPedal has been refined on all the Fox range for this year and next year, hopefully doing away with the wooden feeling of old, replacing it with the same platform, but a quicker and more natural feeling valve opening.
The DHX Air also has Fox's 'Boost Valve' which adds a certain amount of position sensitive damping and increases damping as the shaft travel increases. It'll come in six popular lengths and weighs 450g (8.75in x 2.5in)
RP3 - The RP3 rear shock remains largely unchanged, apart from the ProPedal improvement (yay!) and will also gain much more positive feeling clicks on the ProPedal lever. A small - but useful improvement. Weight is still a light 200g.
