LET'S share our experiences so others may be saved the cost of hit-and-miss purchases.
I suppose everyone tends to always grab their most comfortable, practical shoes even without thinking. Ano po ang favorite footwear nyo when you ride... and why?
You may add useful info such as what kind of riding you do (XC, downhill, etc.) or what kind of pedal do you use.
Me, I always wear sport sandals--the cheap kind you get for below P500 tapos don't feel bad throwing away when they're worn. Feels cool/breathable and just enough support when you need to use your feet for balance. Velcro straps keep them on all the time. I ride XC and use big flat pedals so they don't cut the soles. Downside: grass, mud and dirt between the toes.

brad, since my pedals are clipless it follows that i use my shoes with cleats, clipless pedals are the way to go when u ride xc/light trail/hardpack/pavement, it might be intimidating at first to non clipless users but once u get the hang of it , u wont go bak to platform pedals

brad, shimano came up with sandals that u can attach cleats to, dunno f theyr still available ( tagal na nun eh), but there are a lot of choices for cycling shoes n cartimar( or any reputable lbs), m sure u can find one to suit ur taste and budget. and as for the pedals, shimano had these clip ons to spd pedals( verify f they still make'em) so that they look like platforms wen ur using ordinary shoes

for city riding, i use platform shoes. but if i do XC riding on trails (especially lately with all that MUD!) i prefer using mtb shoes with those huge studs underneath. gives me more "leverage" and traction whenever i have to walk on the ground. and with both i use cleats...once i tried em, i never went back pedalling without them my pedals are eggbeaters...they're light, sheds mud/dirt fast and super easy to clean!

VANS!!!!
when i was using platform i used skateboard shoes from Vans, forgot the model
now that i'm on clipless, i'm using the now defunct Vans Mental. i can even wear it all day at the office
i've tried Airwalk before but the sole of the model i got was too soft, i don't know of other models though.

For skateboard and freeriding I use my VANS (I think I have a couple of them since high school) Rowley and Half cab (New Edition) and for trails and DH Im using my MERREL (CHAMELEON II STRETCH GORE-TEX® XCR®). Both are OK for thier specific riding conditions.

Some questions:
Where can I get these?
- reputable bike shops would stock these shoes
Are these shoes expensive?
- cheapest i've seen is around 1500
What are my choices for someone trying to make the most of every peso?
- if you don't like to go clipless, any pair of shoes (or sandals) would do as long as you are comfortable with them on or off the bike. some people prefer hiking shoes so that they can tackle the hike-a-bike sections of a trail. should you decide to do clipless, then you will have to spend for pedals and shoes.
Are there air-cool or sandal-like designs?
- none that i know of now
Will my bike be rendered unusable without the shoes?
- you can try those one-sided clipless pedals. these are cage pedals with a clipless mechanism on one side of the platform. this way you can use both your biking shoes and and ordinary shoes or sandals with the pedals

brad, those are the sandals i told you about. i have a friend who had those but it was a long time ago(late 90's), i think he got it from either joven bikeshop or in cartimar, dont know the exact cost ( about 2k+/- w/o cleats if i remember correctly) but he claimed that they are good enough for hardpack and light trail riding. but doesnt recommend it for real offroad excursions, sez it doesnt hold ur feet secured enuff for gnarly trails, but overall sez its comfy

i've seen that kind of shimano sandals when i did the maarat trails. one of the bikers (non-PinoyMTBiker) is wearing that. and he has an intense frame. i think fattire knows who's that person.

Thanks guys. Baka nasa 5K+ na yan these days. I wonder if pwede magpasadya na lang sa M'kina? Or modify an existing pair of shoes/sandals? I think masarap lang kasi sa sandals relatively lighter and may full ventilation specially when climbing on a hot day. Quick drain and dry din kung lumusong sa tubig. Although I notice we seem to be getting a lot of Vans, Airwalk and Kickers users here. Ano po ba ang maganda dito? What can you say about canvass shoes like Chucks? Mabigat siguro pag nabasa noh? Thanks again! (Pahabol: Are cleats pedal-specific?)

i use also a clipless pedal so i use mtb shoes with cleats. for me its more comfortable especially on long rides.
for city rides i just attach the platform adaptor for the pedal and whoala! instant platform pedals. i use my reebok all weather/all terrain shoes for this.

Thanks guys. Baka nasa 5K+ na yan these days. I wonder if pwede magpasadya na lang sa M'kina? Or modify an existing pair of shoes/sandals? (Pahabol: Are cleats pedal-specific?) a friend of mine was willing do convert a normal rubber shoe (my choice then was the Fila Ferrari) into a clipless shoe. don't know how he will do it but it didn't push through. i think you have to strip of the sole and insert a plastic plate to stiffen the sole. cleats pedal-specific, kinda. can't use spd cleats on eggbeaters, same with look and time atac cleats. if you wanna go clipless, consider your pedal first, anyway there are some adapters for spd shoes to attach cleats of different formats.
