The NRS uses a Horst-Link rear suspension layout while the Anthem uses the proprietary Maestro. Giant has adapted the maestro so that they dont pay royalties to the owner of the patent (I think Turner sold it to specialized?). The anthem being a newer model does not necessarilly mean it.s better. I would say both are on par.
FWIW, even turner who invented the design has modified the horst-link and called the new design TNT. In theory, the articulation of the axle is identical to the already superior Horst-link. He did this so that he doesn't have to pay royalties anymore (yes he has to pay royalties for his own invention since he sold the patent).

Isnt it horst link was made by Mr Horst Leitner? And the NRS by Renault? The rocker link is a Giant maestro design but the link is a VPP(Virtual Pivot Point) invented by Outland which is being use now by some companies like Santa Cruz,Intense,Foes and ETC.

I've extensively tried both the NRS and the Anthem, and I would take the Anthem any day. At the end of a long ride I feel more beat up using an NRS since it's very stiff compared to the Anthem. Although I haven't verified it, I believe the Anthem is lighter compared to the NRS.

Raul,
You are right, The problem with the racer boy NRS is the no sag set-up of the suspension. We have to accept tht sag is good and not all of us are racer boys, wannabees probabaly. I've prep up most of the NRS bikes here in dubai and if you will put at least 15 % sag, the ride is not that harsh. I take the Anthem anyday for the fact that it is a VPP suspension design.
hdreynolds, If turner is the inventor of the horst link, why the need to pay for the use of the design?

Actually David Turner and Horst Leitner collaborated on the design while they were working at AMP Research. VPP is licensed while maestro is a modification by Giant. Giant corraborated with Renault to develop the NRS which is essentially a horst. Renault had a hand in developing the NRS air shock.

hdreynolds,
That's interesting, I was just wondering why it was named after mr Horst Leitner?
As per my knowledge, Mr Leitner invented it and use it first with the bike Amplifier B4 or something by that name. Imay have read that article in the Ride mag but not that clear and another one fom MBR. I will go over and recheck if Turner did, invented the Horst link.
FYI, the NRS is a Renault Sports design. You can check most of them frame and at the back of the seat tube is a sticker that says Renault Sports Patent.

hdreynolds,
Isnt the four bar linkage that was designed also by renault? Coz the shocks nis only a knock-off of most air hocks in the market.

hdreynolds, Isnt the four bar linkage that was designed also by renault? Coz the shocks nis only a knock-off of most air hocks in the market. From research since I own a tuned NRS, the XTC NRS is a collaboration between Giant and Renult Formula One suspension engineers resulting in the 4 bar suspension married to a proprietary NRS (no resonance system) air shock. The shock itself may look similar to knock off shocks in the market but it is still proprietary, hence it doesn't share any internal component with any knock-off air shock in the market. On a different note, those who own NRS bikes, this bike is a no-sag design. Therefore you should set up the rear so that there is no sag when you sit on the bike (rider weight + gear weight). To do this inflate the shock same as your weight (w/ gear) + 10psi. Use the rubber O-ring as a guide to ascertain there is no sag. Fine tune rebound according to your taste with the rebound adjuster.

Woohoohooo, this is getting more exciting....I am learning here....I am actually a simple cyclist who does not even know the difference between NRS and Anthem and with your discussions guys...I am having a bit knowledge of these two frames.
Enzo, is it worth selling my NRS carbon and getting a new Anthem Advance or Team?

Its only in full carbon and it won european bike of the year in 2006 over a Turner, Intense and another brand I now forget. I've yet to read bad reviews about this frame.

hdreynolds, Thanks for the info. Just my opinion enzo, the maestro may mimic (or look like) a virtual pivot but to me the more I look at its design the more it resembles a DW-link.

As if resurrected from the dead! Now, this thread has a life of its own!!! Someone close this thread before it really gains control of its life! We're all entitled to our own level of bling - and if someone really feels they will be stronger or faster on 105T carbon rig(as per Goyo's quote - then cool. If someone just wants it 'cause they want it - so be it! These conversations are always interesting , especially when Mojo enters the topic. More than interesting, Passion is just oozing from the very core of the point of this thread here.
Uh huh. Is it freakin' Friday yet?
This week keeps on dragging on.... Oh, it's just Monday!!! Da*n!
Now, any headsup with the 5" Trance, our benevolent Giant Manager? TIA!!!

Onie, Same characteristic as all the bikes i've ridden, coz I have a different approach with rear suss. I tune it to my riding style, and if its a different suspension blah blah system, I tune my body to it by weight shifting. There is no suspension in the market now that will make me oooh or aaahh. They're all the same in a way that the rear end goes up and absorb the shock. That's why till now im stuck with the Trance despite the onslaught of NEW suspension designs in the market. I started with Trek, so I have the chance to ride test em bikes in their stable such as the Kleins, the Fishers, etc. And I didnt just ride them, owned a few actually.
The Trance is just a more solid build for trail/xc riding and will forgive you if you go a bit aggressive. Its a point and shoot bike.
But then again, it will be different if the travel will go up on other suspension design. Its a different story and I dont want you looking at the days of the week and with the big "boring" written on your forehead.
For a while there, I thought Horst Leitner lost his place in the history book.
