Chain is much trustworthy compared to a cable lock.
But mine are cable locks more convenient kasi.
"Master" brand P150

to the bike commuters there.. what kadena would you recommend to protect the bike with? had recently purchased two defective ones lately kasi. the first, bought at ACE, had the insides crushed. the second just malfunctioned [size=3 ] I've gone through close to a dozen bike locks theses past three years. MOst of the time, I lose the keys!! So now, i use combination bike locks I bought from Powerbikes last year(P200/pc). i also saw nice thick, and relatively long "Giant" combination bike locks at All Terra. I use two bike locks as an added deterrent. If a thief saw two bikes parked side by side, having two bike locks attached to my bike will make him choose the other bike with one bike lock. It also helps that i'm a bit OC. hahahaa!! ;D
But, if ever desidido talaga yung maagnanakaw, even the best bike locks(chains,cable,U-lock) can be sawed/picked/forced open. Bike locks only serve as deterrents. Just be sure to pick safe and well lighted bike parking. ;-)

these locks are not an effective way to prevent bike theft but only a means to slow down thieves. only park your bike in secure places and only if you're going to be out for a short time. ex. checking out parts at a bike shop. best if you want to use a bike to commute, get a mall bike. it only cost as much as a good set of cranks. if you're going to store your bike at home, keep it indoors. only if we had RFID parking systems like that in japan. ;D

For really difficult situations , use TWO DIFFERENT locks requiring two different tools to destroy. Having a ride buddy/buddies helps coz you could lock your bikes together using the different locks each one carries with him.
The main logic is that tools normally used (bolt-cutter, portable-jacks, saws) are usually quite bulky and too obvious to passers-by--carrying two or more different tools next to a locked bike is too risky for the thief.

for locking my 2 bikes at home - i bought a chain of med size and wrapped it with used/useless bike tubes (protection from frame rub) and a med padlock "master lock" brand and aside from the chains - i also use cable locks "master lock" as secondary locks to secure both wheels to the frame and if i have the budget - i'll also buy a doberman ;D ;D

I recommend master cable lock, there is a choice of cable diameter to choose from and colors to choose from.

PS. if i get pissed at someone i can lock their bike hehe ;D 1st, drink sustagen premium regularly for memory gaps... 2nd, i believe the package includes 2 keys..leave the spare in your bike stuff box or cabinet. 3rd, if you lost both keys, increase dosage of sustagen premium. 4th, dont lock the bike of the guy who just gave you a well intentioned advice

Hi there guys, i just had to share this one in hoping it will provide good review in choosing a bike lock... I rode to my bank at Quiapo yesterday and locked my bike to the railings... Then the thought of where i hid my keys escaped me... oh my...i lost my keys!!! This prompt me to SOS to my nearby compadres to help me "cut" my chain. Good thing i got the security guard as witness for my bike's ownership in preventing further scandal. I also had to inform him that we'll resort to "lagare" the chain. He obliged and let me loiter around til my friend arrives. Then 30 mins later my friend came in rescue with two bolt cutters. At first we thought it will be a jiffy and we'll walk away without much people noticing since we have Industrial-Quality Bolt Cutters. However, the asero fibres proved to be a toughie! It took us 10-12mins coz the bold cutter just cannot cut right through; plus the plastic shielding provide extra "kunat" to the effort. We also had to cut some strands by apply quick wiggling and bending to make them give in. Man, good thing no one took notice and scandal, not even a lespu on his scoot 10meters away. That video posted up there is true, nobody cares much if you have bolt cutters hehe as illustrated are references. this is the cut Master Lock-type with a colored plastic shielding and asero fibres... P108.00 at SM hardware cross-section: a close-up: Upon going home, I tried a same bolt cutter to an old chain and i cut it in a snap! Conclusively, these fiber'd bike locks prove to be effective for its intended purpose. Yeah, thieves may still cut them but you buy more time using these master locks rather than a solid chain or lock

I'm using two cable locks for my bike. One is a cat eye brand lock which has a very thick cable and hardened tube but it's quite heavy. I only use this one to secure my bike at my house garage. The other is the master lock brand which I use to secure my bike whenever I go out for a ride, a lot more convenient to use and lightweight.

I use a GORIN lock, with 10 keys and you need to press a 4 key combination to open it, color blue. My mom bought it for me along with my bmx bike last 1988 pa and its still the lock i use today on my mtb. My dog tried to chew thru it 5 years ago, thus the plastic? cover has some damage but it's still very reliable. It has a length of around 24 inches only.

im reviving this thread for reviews of Bike Locks out there due to prominent bike napping and what not. much for others, they only claim features and recommends but havent tested really prying or cutting them, but im a curious fella quirked by the Mythbusters TV show. so far ive only tested cutting through a Master Lock and a Chain (yung kay bantay) using a Industrial-Quality bolt cutter and guess which was cut faster? ---- Master Lock = 10-12mins; Chain ni Bantay = 2secs!!! now, i just wanna be clear about these... having bike locks dont guarantee your bike won't be napped, but would certainly buy you more time if thieves attempt to do your bike. have those bikes watched and parked right and in sight of you or a trustworthy sekyu

ronron, It is possible that the bolt cutter can be used to cut/crush the plastic parts of the Master Lock instead - can you confirm if this is possible with your bolt cutter and damaged master lock chain?
