i have a merida hardtail with me and im planning to use it to go back and forth from school! it will be around a 5-7 km ride every week and with the limited funds that i have, i dont think ill be able to afford that if i have to buy new tires every so often! do you guys think that its possible for me to use my bike to commute and still be able to ride the trails every week with one set of tires?

That's hard man! It's not that hard to change tires so just buy a cheap set for your commute! And reserve your trail tires for the trails.. ;D My commute to work is around 8kms using Dirt Tires and believe you me it takes a lot out of your tires if you do it everyday! But I've seen people use knobby tires for commuting mostly Maxxis or Kendas.. But I'm more concerned with your bike's safety rather than the tires..

It's just okay brad..just use a lighter tire..I think 2.0 to 2.2 will be just fine for your commuting to save you some energy..but I prefer 2.35 in the trails..It won't wear off soon enough just by commuting...I'm doing it...and I got friends who does it...COm'on going to maarat is a pure road before you hit the trails..so if you do it much often you wouldn't notice the difference..you're not skidding on trails or doing some drift, so it can be done unless you always hit your brakes so hard and rip off your tires to the road and trails

i agree that it's better to get an extra set for the road. sayang knobbies mo. i use 1.75 IRC Metro II's for road riding on my MTB. they're very efficient and have awesome grip on the pavement. tire life looks promising as well. they're cheap too at only 350 pesos / tire at paulinas.

believe me, fatherpicx covered Davao- Aparri-Davao using 3 tyres, he would have used only 2, if not for the tear he suffered on the way back to Manila from the north.
during his tour he averaged 100kms a day, and his disc pads wore off quickly than his tyres did.
the lifespan of your tyres depends on the manner you ride. braking hard or wheel locks are unforgiving for the tyres.
i presume you know that as well.
lately, i slapped on some slicks on my messenger bicycle, a 1.25 that is, very good rolling efficiency as per the advice of bikedaddy. but i'm still observing its wear pattern.
like you i'm always tight on the budget, but i always invest on tyres when i have an extra sum of money. next to that, i also allot for bearings, cause thats what gets you doing.

unless you skid a lot, it will be a very long time before you wear out a set of mtb tires. I have 2-3000 miles on a set of soft tires on my roadbike and there's plenty of life remaining. my mtb gets mixed road and trail miles and it took 2 years and 3000+ miles before I had to replace the rear tire. if you're commuting 5-7 km a week the sidewalls may rot before the tread is worn out. ride them worry free. save P20 every month and you'll have enough money to buy new tires by the time the current ones wear out.
