I've always been impressed with craftsmanship & quality of the TIME pedals. Had 2 road bikes with them & till now haven't given me much of headache. I have an aging Shimano PD-M424 on my AM mtb & decided it was time to change it to TIME. My riding style is just more of a hobbyist & don't really go hard core on the trail. But I needed a platform to cross some technical terrain. Its also easier to use sandals or regular shoes on a platform when you're lazy to get on those cleated shoes. The size & weight of the Z Control is wider, but almost of the same weight of the M424. The Z Control gives me more confidence in uncleated riding as the wider base provides a sturdier platform giving less pedal slippage. Engaging or locking on the Z Control is a little trickier than that of Shimano. I'd say its easier to engage on an SPD than of a TIME. Step on vertically on an SPD & you'd lock already. On a TIME you'd have to hook 1st the pedal w/the front cleat of your shoe then press down to engage. Much like of a road pedal.. (or I might not have gotten used to it yet ;D) A downside of the Z Control also is the unavailability of tension release adjustment. (to be continued...) The massive & beasty appearance of the TIME Z's. Did I mention also heavy...
