Hi guys just want to share with you all, Please read this news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080511/ap_on_bi_ge/work_bikesHave copy some:- About 18 million bicycles have been sold annually in the U.S. over the past few years, accounting for about $6 billion in annual sales, said Fred Clements, executive director the National Bicycle Dealers Association in Costa Mesa, Calif. Bicycle shops across the country are reporting strong sales so far this year, and more people are bringing in bikes that have been idled for years, he said. "People are riding bicycles a lot more often, and it's due to a mixture of things but escalating gas prices is one of them," said Bill Nesper, spokesman for the Washington. D.C.-based League of American Bicyclists. "We're seeing a spike in the number of calls we're getting from people wanting tips on bicycle commuting," he said. The League of American Bicyclists is promoting Bike-to-Work Week this week and Bike-to-Work Day on May 16. Nesper said he expects a record number of people will be pedaling this year. There's almost nowhere for the numbers to go but up: The group says less than one-half of 1 percent of Americans ride a bike to work. Regards Joe

This is one good move to help the environment, Im not sure here in the philippines but as days goes by, I noticed every morning that more people are using bicycle going to work, and what I've heard on the news that people in Malabon are using Japan bikes as their mode of transportation.

gas prices are bound to go higher and higher.its only a matter of time before local people settle for serious alternatives to their regular transport to work etc. Its fortunate for us bike fanatics to realize the advantages of our sport this early.I hope we can also have bike to work day / week highlighted here in the Philippines, and let more people into biking.when you come to really think about it, maliit lang ang manila.ma traffic lang.(trans. Manila aint huge. every place is bikeable.)
thanks for the article Joe.

The country should adopt a "casual clothes" workday wherein those with bikes go around hassle-free....so 20% of the workweek we ll save a lot of gas and dilapidated bodies

angelobryant I feel the same way you do brad, but I have some officemates here in a call center who also bike to work. And some of my friends now keeps on asking me on how much I save from biking, they are also looking forward to use one, considering that fuel now costs P50.

The problem here is our weather. It's too hot to bike to work. Unless your work place have shower.

Yeah, and when the rainy season comes. Not only do we have to deal w/ sweaty body but a dirty one too w/ the rain water and road grime that comes along w/ it. So defintiely hard to Bike commute in Manila.

Aye agree with you guys that its hard to commute in Manila same here in Dubai, the major problem here are the crazy drivers driving like mad max be the local or the expats, (except me - hahaha) The lespu here recently warned bikers that they will confiscate your bikes if they caught you riding in some major thorough fares "too bad". But on the other hand they are planning to build a bicycle lane. If that will push through i'll be commuting to office with my bike everyday, but, but only during winter season.

i'm planning on installing fenders on my bike. just remove them when i'm sure there's no rain.
a couple of officemates of mine are now asking me to have a bike built for them. i live about 8 kms. from work. another officemate lives about 24 kms. from work. i said it's possible, you can even reach the office in under an hour.

Any brand you can recommend? So far, toppeak (spelling check) looks promising.

angelobryant, i've been eyeing either The Fender or, hmm....i forgot if it was mongoose, i saw it all terra. although i'm thinking of going old school, the more fenders/fairings, the less mud and water on other components.

i bike to work 2-3 times a week when i was teaching in greenhills 2 years ago...
we don't have a shower but i make sure that naligo n ako mabuti, and i don't make "hataw" so that i won';t get persiration chuva and i avoid heavily congested traffic areas so smoke and dust won't make kapit to me...
when i arrive at the office, i prepare my office clothes w/c i left a day before. and lock the c.r. there's a sink and with facetowel and antibacterial soap, i just simply wipe away the dry sweat make punas mabuti on the kilikili and neck and other critical areas! then change to offc clothes then work...
i save a lot of gas while i was working + i got a good training since going to greenhills means your going uphill...
and i also enjoy going home since it's puro DOwNHILL na! hahahahaha!
bilib lahat ng officemates ko and i try to encourage them but sadly, they fail to see the benefits since they are more on porma and the best way is with their cars! tsk!tsk! tsk!

I hope our government will promote bicycle use(padyak power) just like in Marikina. I hope they construct bicycle lanes for everyone to use especially going to and from Makati/Quezon City/Manila areas.
If the crude price shoots up more than $150/barrel, i'm sure lot's of people will consider Bicycle as an alternative transportation to work.

most of my officemates live north of the office, we're located in taguig. they'll take a beating if they try to bike commute. i wish not just bike lanes, but but bike racks also in train stations.
example, i can leave my bike in trinoma (like what ronald arca does). ride the train to ayala, then get my 2nd beater bike and ride to the fort.

Is it true that there will be an additional P1.50 or P2 to our current jeepney fare? I just heard on some agents here in our office. Which make me think of buying easy to carry folding bike, that I can bring inside Malls, MRT stations or office. Im sure that I can leave it on the baggage counter he he he. Its just my way of saving money.

looks like i'm going to invest in a folding bike, if bike parking still continues to be a pain.

I thought bikes aren't allowed in trinoma? Where do you park your bike sir? And how much for the fee? Locks you use? Are we supposed to be happy that fuels are skyrocketing and it would mean more people go to the alternative of riding a bike to commute? Well, it's good that there'll be more of us but with gas prices up... What will happen to this "God forsaken country?" *sigh* I should run for president or something... Or be a superhero like Ironman... Haha!! Laugh all the problems... Hay...
