last year i got me a set of M959s and now keep them on my NRS full-time once i became more confident with using clipless pedals.
then i decided to get another set of clipless pedals for my hardtail. at 4K+, the 959's seemed too expensive for a second bike, so i opted for a set of 540's that a friend sold me for 300 less than what they were selling for at that time, i.e. 1.9K. i have never regretted that decision and wonder why i didn't get a set of 540s in the first place (think they weren't released yet at that time)
anyway, the 540's look, function, and feel just like the 959's...and only 6 gms heavier than the pro level 959 but at half the price!
for my recreational mtb-ing...the 540 is perfect. ;D

Nice pedals.. the 959 is more for racing and good for mud.

Nice pedals.. the 959 is more for racing and good for mud. Right on brad. It really works! Pero is the price commensurate with the added benefit? Or is it just plain hype?

Had the mud test on my 959's last Sunday in the mud of Pinugay and Lagundi (the extra sticky type) - yup they're great in the mud. Clips in easy and clips in fast!

yes, the 959s proved their mud-clearing abilities too in our mud ride in sta rosa last weekend ;D ;D ;D i really expect the 540 to perform just as well in mud...its the same design, same multi-release set-up, same play, same adjustability.... the only real difference i can see is in material and coating used. saving 2k and getting PRACTICALLY the same benefits...bottom line for me, if you're after a performance pedal but want to save money when looking at the shimano line...the 540 will satisfy.
